Feminist And Green Design: New Aesthetics Or New Ethics?, Tripti Upreti Apr 2017

Feminist And Green Design: New Aesthetics Or New Ethics?, Tripti Upreti

Symposium on Undergraduate Research and Creative Expression

Design has influenced our lives in many ways, from impacting our environment to altering human behavior. We will discuss two of the approaches to Socially Responsible Design, fulfilling the requirements of sustainability- Green Design and Feminist Design. Green Design has been implemented to minimize the harmful effects on human health and environment, thus to make our planet more sustainable. Feminist Design, on the other hand, caters to the significance of women’s role in the society, where male dominance is prevalent. We will also address the discourse of inequality and its relation to cultural adaptations. Social Responsible Design has not ...

Mobile Diagnostic Lab (Mdl)—Research Environment For Enhancing Energy Efficiency In Building Science, Kaylinn Taggart, Laura Michaelson

Symposium on Undergraduate Research and Creative Expression

The Mobile Diagnostic Lab is an interdisciplinary research project which will provide a space to explore energy efficiency through experimentation. With the use of the weather station, the opportunity to study micro-environments in different locations. Construction is currently taking place and is set to be completed by the end of this spring semester. The project designs allow for interchangeable materials to observe how it might affect the HVAC and other systems within the structure. The design has one experimental space separated from the mechanical space to allow for further exploration. MDL presents a unique space where researchers will be able ...

Interlock House—Occupant Feedback Strategies For Achieving Net Zero Energy, Kaylinn Taggart Apr 2017

Interlock House—Occupant Feedback Strategies For Achieving Net Zero Energy, Kaylinn Taggart

Symposium on Undergraduate Research and Creative Expression

The Interlock House is an interdisciplinary project located at Honey Creek Resort in Moravia, IA which studies energy efficiency by using passive design methods. The purpose of this research is to examine changes in the building temperatures and systems based on occupants' responses and their use in passive design strategies. Sensors within the house log data on temperatures, humidity and status which is gathered in Eagle.io. This is a visualization tool to better analyze anomalies in the data which will help us to achieve our net zero goal.

The first official year of monitoring the Interlock House began in ...

Need Vs. Supply Analysis Of The New Haven Public Bus System, Stan Mathis Jan 2017

Need Vs. Supply Analysis Of The New Haven Public Bus System, Stan Mathis

Yale Day of Data

ABSTRACT:

The aim of the study was to assess how well the public transportation system of New Haven County was matched to the public transit need using publicly available geospatial datasets from state and federal sources. Geospatial bus stop data was extracted from public State of Connecticut data sets. Census tract geography was extracted from US Census TIGER files while census tract aggregated household vehicle access data was queried from the American Community Survey data access server. A census tract’s Need was defined as percentage of households reporting access to zero vehicles; its supply was defined as the number ...
