Lateral Strength And Ductile Behavior Of A Mortise-Tenon Connected Timber Frame, Alexandros Kouromenos Mar 2017

Lateral Strength And Ductile Behavior Of A Mortise-Tenon Connected Timber Frame, Alexandros Kouromenos

Master's Theses and Project Reports

The primary goals of this project were to examine the amount of lateral force resisted by a single-bay mortise-tenon connected timber moment frame, and to introduce ductile behavior into the mortise-tenon connections by adding a steel sleeve around a traditional wood peg. This research aimed to provide proof that traditional timber frames are capable of ductile racking while reliably complying with ASCE 7-10 building code drift speci! cations, implying an increase in the ASCE 7-10 ductility factor (R) for wood frames when used as lateral force resisting elements. A secondary goal was to promote traditional heavy timber framing as a ...

Membrane Dissection: The Bechtler Museum, Mike Lidwin, Rachel List Feb 2017

Membrane Dissection: The Bechtler Museum, Mike Lidwin, Rachel List

EURēCA: Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement

A windowless façade becomes the inspiration for an experimentation of materials. Through the use of terracotta cladding, Mario Botta crafts a local landmark and structural masterpiece in his design of the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art. The Bechtler Museum is located in Charlotte, North Carolina, and appears as a giant terracotta-red cube in the downtown cityscape. Instead of including several exterior windows, Botta focuses on the materiality of terracotta to function as an attractive facade and as an effective enclosure system.

This research project analyzes structural and enclosure elements of Mario Botta’s Bechtler Museum. Through diagramming the building in ...

Bicp Global Bim Study - Lessons For Ireland’S Bim Programme, Barry Mcauley, Alan Hore, Roger West

Reports

The Construction IT Alliance (CitA) has been promoting the benefits of digitisation in the construction and engineering industry in Ireland since its formation back in 2002. Whilst the Alliance has always strived to ensure that its members are exposed to a wide spectrum of contemporary digital tools and processes, the concept of Building Information Modelling (BIM) has dominated the focus of its activities over the past five years.

BIM can be described as a digital tool that facilitates everybody to better understand a building or structure through the use of a digital model which draws on a range of data ...

Transforming Pervasive Into Collaborative: Engaging Youth As Leaders With Gis Through A Framework That Integrates Technologies, Storytelling, And Action, Alenka Poplin, Linda Shenk, Ulrike Passe

Architecture Publications

This paper presents the methods and preliminary results gained in geographic information systems (GIS)-based participatory activities designed to engage youth in urban planning. We describe our engagement framework that integrates such pervasive IT tools as GIS, online serious games, agent-based modeling, and mobile participatory GIS into engagement strategies that tap into what we see as the storytelling capabilities of these tools. We show how these methods help citizens, in our case youth, assume leadership roles and take positive, tangible actions in their communities. This paper summarizes the elements of our framework and the initial results of a program called ...

Linking Geospatial Engineering Into Collaborative Multidisciplinary Bim Projects - An Educational Perspective, Avril Behan, Helen Murray, Jonathan Argue, Ronan Hogan, Audrey Martin, Pat O'Sullivan, Robert Moore, Malachy Mathews

Conference papers

This paper describes the background to and execution of a postgraduate project undertaken by students on DIT's MSc in Geospatial Engineering (GeoEng) in support of a project on level 2 BIM being undertaken by students on the MSc in applied Building Information Modelling & Management (aBIMM) around the retrofit of and new build extension to the Grangegorman Clock Tower Building. In support of this requirement, an external and internal survey of the existing structure and its surrounding topography was required. The aBIMM students and staff acted as the Design Team who subcontracted the Geo Eng group who were organised into ...

Z-Cube: Mobile Living For Feminist Nomads, Zi Ye Jan 2017

Z-Cube: Mobile Living For Feminist Nomads, Zi Ye

Masters Theses

Homes proclaim our social standing and reflect the trend of the times. This project seeks to explore and redefine the relationship between modern homes and modern women who strive for mobile life styles.

Modernism and globalization have brought us a new way of living that could have never been imagined before— our workspace and homes are no longer limited to a specific unit but have extended to the entire globe. The physical changes compelled by modernity have also complemented the changing role of women. Since the beginning of the 20th century, modern women have expanded their lives outside of their ...

Sentience-Towards A Responsive And Systems Driven Design Process., Juliana Barton Jan 2017

Sentience-Towards A Responsive And Systems Driven Design Process., Juliana Barton

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Sentience is a pilot project and call for an alternative to the current design process most widely accepted and practiced in architecture and design. It challenges the current use of technology as simply a means for representation and end production, by suggesting a truly explorative and multi-disciplinary approach to designing through computation. Cutting- edge work such as Neri Oxman’s Material Ecology studies, or the fibrous, robotically-fabricated pavilions by Achim Menges exemplifies the potential for technology’s use in design that is not limited to generating form, but is attuned to the dynamic qualities of living systems. Integrating computation and ...

Thermal And Energy Performance Of Double Skin Facades In Different Climate Types, Ajla Aksamija Dec 2016

Thermal And Energy Performance Of Double Skin Facades In Different Climate Types, Ajla Aksamija

Ajla Aksamija

This paper explores thermal and energy performance of double skin facades (DSFs) in different climate types, specifically focusing on three typologies: box window, corridor type and multistory DSFs. These systems were investigated and analyzed to answer the question of how the different DSFs perform in comparison to each other, as well as a typical curtain wall (single skin facade used as a baseline), in a multitude of climate applications. The utilized research methods included two-dimensional heat transfer analysis (finite element analysis), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis and energy modeling. Heat transfer analysis was used to determine heat transfer coefficients (U-values ...

Double-Skin Facades And Daylight Simulations: Comparative Study Of Facade Typologies And Effects On Natural Light In Different Climates, Ajla Aksamija Dec 2016

Double-Skin Facades And Daylight Simulations: Comparative Study Of Facade Typologies And Effects On Natural Light In Different Climates, Ajla Aksamija

Ajla Aksamija

This article discusses results of a research study that investigated daylight performance of glazed double-skin facades (DSFs) in various climate types. The objectives of the study were: 1) to analyze the daylight levels in different types of DSFs (box window, corridor type, and multistory) in four different climates; 2) to compare daylight performance against the conventional single skin glazed facade (curtain wall); 3) to investigate the effects of facade orientations on daylight; and 4) to investigate the impacts of facade characteristics (different depth of air cavities in DSFs) on daylight levels. The research methods consisted of daylight simulations in Radiance ...
