Space: Notes On The Thought Of Luce Irigaray, Andrea Wheeler

Architecture Publications

In March 2015, a conference was held in New York entitled Feminism in Architecture 2015, and subtitled, ‘We need to change our expectations. We need new models of success. We need to change what and how we teach’. I made an application, and I suggested adding to the subtitle ‘And we need an evolution in love’ (it was not accepted). And yet, the concept of affect, but not apparently affection, is a current conversation in architecture. The question of atmosphere and affect, of space and mood, has been pondered in a number of conferences recently including: Atmospheres (University of Manchester ...

A Framework For Urban Environmental Planning In Brazil, Monica A. Haddad Oct 2015

A Framework For Urban Environmental Planning In Brazil, Monica A. Haddad

Community and Regional Planning Publications

Brazil faces numerous environmental challenges despite having many laws and policies in place. The implementation process of such laws and policies does not exist a majority of the time, affecting the quality of environmental governance in the country. Within the urban planning context, the City Statute law enacted in 2001 included the environmental dimension of urbanization; however, the wording of this inclusion was vague and broad. For instance, two environmental assessment planning tools of the law are not mandatory at the federal level and are without a defined scope. In this Exploration, a new framework focusing on the environmental dimension ...

Delta Dental Opens Up, Daniel J. Naegele, Main Street Photography, Opn Architects Oct 2015

Delta Dental Opens Up, Daniel J. Naegele, Main Street Photography, Opn Architects

Architecture Publications

When Delta Dental of Iowa decided to enlarge its corporate offices in Johnston, Iowa, there was little need to repeat the exhaustive search that had gone into finding an architect five years earlier. At that time, a competitive selection process and a great deal of research resulted in OPN Architects being commissioned. Delta Dental, a national insurance company, was delighted with the building OPN designed and thoroughly enjoyed working with the regional architecture firm. This made obvious the selection of an architect for the addition: No one knew the clients, the situation, or the existing building better than OPN.

Architectural Creativity & Employee Creativity, James M. Spiller, Paul Crosby, Substance Architecture Oct 2015

Architectural Creativity & Employee Creativity, James M. Spiller, Paul Crosby, Substance Architecture

Architecture Publications

For the countless travelers who hum along Interstate 80 through Iowa each day, the newly constructed Brownells Inc. building, designed by Substance Architecture, marks a distinct glimmer in the expanse at the southern edge of Grinnell. The prominent building at mile marker 182 is easily seen from both directions along I-80 due to its generous size as the company’s primary distribution center, headquarters, and new retail shop along one of the busiest national commercial corridors. The building rests on low-lying fields of prairie, extending along the interstate and anchored by a striking dark façade. At high speeds, the spacious ...

The Energy Between Us: Two Affective And Intertwined Space-Times Evoked By Architecture As Prelude To A Proper Sharing?, Andrea Wheeler, Aniket Nagdive

Architecture Conference Proceedings and Presentations

“I enter a building, see a room, and…” Peter Zumthor writes, “in a fraction of a second I have this feeling about it” (Zumthor 2006: 13). As an immediately grasped judgment of environmental character, atmosphere has been described as a collaboration of an infinite number of multisensory factors: a non-material experience, contrasting centuries of tradition understanding architecture as material artefact experienced through the limitation of vision (Pallasmaa 2014: 20).

Book Review: Hendrik W. Dey, The Afterlife Of The Roman City: Architecture And Ceremony In Late Antiquity And The Early Middle Ages, Jelena Bogdanović

Architecture Publications

The latest book by Hendrik W. Dey examines the afterlife of the Roman city in the territories of the erstwhile Roman Empire until roughly the ninth century. As a scholar with multiple threads of training in classics, Dey writes his book with a strong archaeological research method that emphasizes the perseverance of urban paradigms of the Greco-Roman world beyond literary tropes or oversimplified economical and demographical analyses. The Afterlife of the Roman City looks in particular at monumental architecture and urban topography by highlighting their importance in the definition of the urban space as a place of ceremonial manifestations of ...

Building A Shared World As A Definition Of Sustainable Architecture?, Andrea S. Wheeler

Andrea S. Wheeler

Whilst the current debates on sustainable architecture is dominated by a conversation about energy performance and abstract certification—each easily manipulated to serve commercial gain—I argue that a philosophical reconsideration of relationality is key to a sustainable built environment, examining sustainable architecture.

Building A Shared World As A Definition Of Sustainable Architecture, Andrea Wheeler

Architecture Conference Proceedings and Presentations

Whilst the current debates on sustainable architecture is dominated by a conversation about energy performance and abstract certification—each easily manipulated to serve commercial gain—I argue that a philosophical reconsideration of relationality is key to a sustainable built environment, examining sustainable architecture through the perspective of Luce Irigaray’s philosophy of being-two. Defining sustainable architecture is a notoriously difficult proposition. Ambitious claims abound, demanding a critical distance, but equally important and necessary self-criticisms are heard. Edward Mazria (2013) founder of the Architecture 2030 Challenge, argues that “life depends on design.” Whilst the building sector as a whole, a major ...

V. Molnár Building The State: Architecture, Politics, And State Formation In Post-War Central Europe. 2013 Routledge 210 Pp. £70.00 (Hardback), Kimberly Elman Zarecor

Architecture Publications

Postwar architecture in Communist Europe has a reputation for ugliness, shoddy construction, and, through its very existence, complicity with the regimes. Scholars of the built environment have been slow to initiate research on the topic because of judgments about the quality of the architecture itself, as well as an aversion to the politically charged discourse around it. In this ambitious and multidisciplinary book, sociologist Virág Molnár works against these perceptions and decisively argues that our understanding of Communism in Europe must include an analysis of the ‘transformation of the built environment,’ since this transformation ‘was politically mobilized in the service ...

Managing Dynamics Of Power And Learning In Community Development: A Case Study Of Iowan Farmers In Uganda, Stephen Lauer, Francis Y. Owusu Jun 2015

Managing Dynamics Of Power And Learning In Community Development: A Case Study Of Iowan Farmers In Uganda, Stephen Lauer, Francis Y. Owusu

Community and Regional Planning Publications

Extension professionals facilitate community development through the strategic manipulation of learning and power in peer-to-peer learning partnerships. We discuss the relationship between empowerment and power, highlight relevant literature on the difficulties power presents to learning and the efficacy of service learning tools to facilitate mutual learning and present original findings from our research on an international development partnership in which Extension professionals had partial success in creating opportunities for mutually empowering learning among farmers from Iowa and Uganda. We recommend that Extension professionals encourage learning across power gradients by providing opportunities for informal conversations and encouraging reflection by participants.

The Agricultural Urbanism Toolkit: Using Health And Wellness To Create New Urban Infrastructures, Nadia Anderson, Courtney Long May 2015

The Agricultural Urbanism Toolkit: Using Health And Wellness To Create New Urban Infrastructures, Nadia Anderson, Courtney Long

Architecture Conference Proceedings and Presentations

Poverty, obesity, and vacant land are characteristics of neighborhoods lacking adequate access to healthy, affordable food, frequently referred to as “food deserts” or “food swamps” (USDA, 2013). While small-scale local food efforts such as community gardens are often present in these areas, they are often isolated and not connected to systems including production, processing, and distribution. The Agricultural Urbanism Toolkit links these aspects of agricultural systems with underutilized spatial assets and local food efforts to create more comprehensive healthy food systems. This paper presents results from the first year of the Toolkit.

The Crowd-Sourced Roadscape Project, Emma Lorenz Apr 2015

The Crowd-Sourced Roadscape Project, Emma Lorenz

Symposium on Undergraduate Research and Creative Expression

During the fall semester of 2014 the 32 Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (BLA) students in the traveling Savanna Studio participated in a semester-long experimental “crowd-sourced” project that was designed to engage students in hands-on site-assessment/field research for 32 separate “roadscape” sites arrayed along the 7350 miles traveled by the students and faculty during two three-week excursions. The students divided responsibilities for inventory of particular aspects of the sites (e.g. physical properties, existing plant communities, materiality, cultural conditions, climate factors, phenomenological character, etc.), documented their assessments while on-site and then later shared the information among the group in cloud-based ...

New York's Cova Condominium Project: Integrating Ancestral Culture In Contemporary Design, Joseph Danielsen Apr 2015

New York's Cova Condominium Project: Integrating Ancestral Culture In Contemporary Design, Joseph Danielsen

Symposium on Undergraduate Research and Creative Expression

This project explored residential interior design at a compact scale, and addressed client issues of cultural identity, changing contexts, human behavior and special needs. Architect Frances Cova and his elderly mother Letizia, originally from Barcelona, Spain, purchased a condominium in Brooklyn, New York. The Covas desired a design concept that would incorporate their ancestral Spanish heritage, and its cultural identity, with the contemporary ideology of simplicity. Design methodology included assessing each client's functional spatial and character needs. Researching Letizia's physical limitations led to developing spatial arrangements to enable ergonomic comfort in her living quarters. To express architectural aesthetics ...
