Unintentional Home Injury Risks Among The Elderly In Southern Nevada, Michelle Echauz Ching
Unintentional Home Injury Risks Among The Elderly In Southern Nevada, Michelle Echauz Ching
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The elderly population (65 years of age and older) is one of the fastest growing populations in the US. A major public health concern involving the elderly population is unintentional injuries in the home. Since elderly adults typically spend the majority of their time in the home, minimizing unintentional home injury hazards is crucial for this population. The Nevada Healthy Homes Partnership (NHHP) program is a grant funded effort that helps to improve the quality and availability of safe and healthy homes in Nevada. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of the NHHP program interventions …
Rhyme Or Reason:That Is The Question?, Jim Roche
Rhyme Or Reason:That Is The Question?, Jim Roche
Articles
Noting that “the aesthetic should not be limited merely to the way things look” the organisers of this conference sought “in part to address the discursive limitation in architecture and related subjects by broadening the aesthetic discourse beyond questions relating to purely visual phenomena in order to include those derived from all facets of human experience”.
So where does etchics come in? Well, the introductory brochure noted that most philosophical trained aestheticians will say that “the aesthetic is everything” hinting perhaps of the necessity for a more haptic experience of architecture. It also drew on Wittgenstein’s quote that “ethics and …

Masters Theses
PERFORM+FUNCTION: Proposal for A Healthy Public Housing Community
Architecture exists in Place, the integrated context of both the built and natural environments, including socio-economic, cultural, and political climates that influence our growth, development, and survival. As architecture necessitates around human purposes, it is important that architecture is built for and sited in an environment compatible for human well-being. My thesis focuses on human habitation and its immediate relationship with human health, assessing the performance and functionality of Place that have an impact on human health. Using public housing as the vehicle of my investigation, I will seek the appropriate application …
Concepts Of Space In Urban Design, Architecture And Art, Nicholas N. Patricios
Concepts Of Space In Urban Design, Architecture And Art, Nicholas N. Patricios
Nicholas Patricios
The contributions that have been made by psychologists, anthropologists and others to the revision of our traditional concepts of space demand, in the author's view, a new approach to urban design, architecture and art. These contributions suggest that two basic categories of space must be distinguished: the physical and the mental. Mental space is shown not to have a one-to-one correspondence with the space that is part of the physical world, due to the mediation of various psychological and cultural factors. A concept of space may be said to originate in an observer's mind and is a structure that is …
Invisible Cities: Photographic Fictions Of Architecture, Maria Levitsky
Invisible Cities: Photographic Fictions Of Architecture, Maria Levitsky
University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The artist's process in which she examines the built environment through the medium of black and white photography. By tracing the trajectory of her awareness of architecture from her early career as a dancer, to the making of photographic images, the artist illuminates the process of deconstructing architectural and pictorial space into fragmented yet illusionistically convincing photographic montages. Influenced by the urban localities in which she dwells, she tells the story of being captivated by the post-industrial landscape of Williamsburg, Brookyn, NY, followed by landing in New Orleans and her fascination with post-Katrina architecture. Grounded in the analog techniques of …
Mme. De Pompadour: Self Promotion And Social Performance Through Architecture And The Decorative Arts, Kelly Elizabeth Boyd
Mme. De Pompadour: Self Promotion And Social Performance Through Architecture And The Decorative Arts, Kelly Elizabeth Boyd
Scripps Senior Theses
The structure of this thesis relies on the physical locations of Mme. de Pompadour. Although the chapters are roughly chronological, beginning with her arrival at Versailles in 1745 and ending with her death in 1764, this work makes no attempt to comprehensively chronicle the entirety of her involvement in the decorative arts. Rather, it focuses on several specific aspects of her patronage, with the goal of illuminating her social position and public image, and how she worked to control the two. Chapter One deals with the first rooms Mme. de Pompadour inhabited, from 1745-1750. These upper apartments characterize her early …

Designing A Complete Community Center: Responsive Design In A Rural Setting, Sheryl Tubbs
Designing A Complete Community Center: Responsive Design In A Rural Setting, Sheryl Tubbs
Capstone Collection
It is a common sight to see community centers in use in various parts of the world. They have fulfilled a variety of roles in many communities for a number of years. This project’s focus is on the design of community center for a rural town. The main research question in this research asks, “What type of community center does this area need?” The sub questions also help to establish the kind of community center that is needed and wanted.
A review of current literature shows no specific way to build a community center or what to include. However there …

North Bottoms: A Participatory Redevelopment & Sustainable Community Engagement Process, Andrea C. Koerner
Community and Regional Planning Program: Professional Projects
This project addressed the economic, social, and environmental ill effects occurring in the North Bottoms in Lincoln, Nebraska. This neighborhood requires the use of innovative community engagement to counteract minimal resources, civic engagement, and social capital in order to accomplish sustainable redevelopment when traditional methods have been unsuccessful. The initial goal of the project was to involve citizens in the design process to create an effective and development strategy and design project for the neighborhood.
Although traditional methods were sufficient to develop a comprehensive approach to sustainable development, it became obvious through engagement with citizens and civic officials that a …
Effects Of Augmented Reality Presentations On Consumer's Visual Perception Of Floor Plans, April L. Lutheran
Effects Of Augmented Reality Presentations On Consumer's Visual Perception Of Floor Plans, April L. Lutheran
Department of Computer Graphics Technology Degree Theses
Home architects and designers use many types of presentation drawings to convey design ideas. Augmented reality is a relatively new technology that can be used to aid in design and marketing for residential builders. An augmented reality presentation provides a more complete idea of a design than other presentations such as 3D model renderings and hand drawn artist sketches. While designers are accustomed to visualizing 2D plans, this task is difficult for home buyers. This difficulty has been associated with lower spatial ability in people who are not accustomed to reviewing plans. Augmented reality can be used to make visualization …
Investigating 3 Axis Cnc Processes For Creating 3d Objects, Michael Jake Newsum
Investigating 3 Axis Cnc Processes For Creating 3d Objects, Michael Jake Newsum
Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal
Using 3 axis CNC (computer numerical code) routing processes of the Visualization Lab, the CNC was tested for 3D object milling. The CNC process was designed for manufacturing 2D cut out objects with or without a 3D surface. The processes of modeling the object, using CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) programs, producing the Toolpath, post processing, editing G Code, positioning the stock material, and setting the machine origin were tested for an understanding of what changes had to be made to the process to accurately mill and cut out 3D objects. Solutions were discovered through digital and physical setups that are …

This Must Be The Place: A Return To The Borscht Belt, Ezra Glenn
Senior Projects Spring 2012
This Must Be the Place: a Return to the Borscht Belt
The Borscht Belt is a region in and around the Catskill Mountains, primarily in Sullivan and Ulster counties, which was once home to over 1,100 resorts, country clubs, golf courses, hotels, and bungalow colonies.
Shortly after the beginning of the 20th century, the first waves of Jewish immigrants arrived from Eastern Europe to New York City in droves. Small Jewish farming colonies that had sprung up in the mid-19th century began opening their doors to vacationers from the city as makeshift boarding houses, in order to supplement …
Transformation Of Urban Public Space, Ruthanne Harrison
Transformation Of Urban Public Space, Ruthanne Harrison
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
The concept of my thesis is to employ architectural intervention in residual urban space as a catalyst for transformation. The goal is design of a building and environment that could be used for any combination of purposes, be used freely by all members of the community, be designed so that the art and architecture is interactive, and could be transformed by the users of the space. The project makes use of a residual urban space that would otherwise remain largely inaccessible. The project explores how the space could be designed to give a sense of ownership of it to the …
Redesigning Suburbia: Establishing A New Infill Development Model For Existing Suburban Communities, Richard Holt
Redesigning Suburbia: Establishing A New Infill Development Model For Existing Suburban Communities, Richard Holt
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
The suburb's contribution to natural resource depletion, reliance on the automobile, and disregard for social connections has been well documented in the last 10-20 years. While these depictions are often accurate, many suburbs have successfully addressed these issues by providing walkable streets and accessible communal corridors. Innovative precedents such as Village Homes, in Davis, CA, Eichler Homes, in CA, and Skinny Homes, in Portland, OR, and others, provide examples of successful suburban developments that incorporate renewable energy solutions, passive design features, and limit the development of native landscapes.
This thesis aims to design a framework to be used in the …

Malaysian Perspective On The Development Of Accessible Design, Hazreena Hussein, Naziaty Mohd Yaacob
Malaysian Perspective On The Development Of Accessible Design, Hazreena Hussein, Naziaty Mohd Yaacob
Hazreena Hussein
Malaysia has been actively providing accessibility in the built environment since the country signed the ‘Proclamation on the Full Participation and Equality of People with Disabilities in the Asia-Pacific Region' in 1994. However, Malaysia has limitations in enforcing legislation pertaining to accessibility. One of the concerns was the local authorities’ role in having their own mechanisms to create an accessible built environment. The objective is to highlight the gaps in Malaysia’s regulations and to illustrate the research development of the Accessible Design infrastructure for disabled people. The outcome will describe Malaysia’s experience in Accessible Design.
