[Re]Formulating The Informal, Sebastien Coles Dec 2009

[Re]Formulating The Informal, Sebastien Coles

Architecture Senior Theses

The identity associate with the inhabitants of the "Bidonvilles" of Haiti is arguably nonexistent aside from its connection to the impoverished conditions of the Haitian slum/shantytown. This thesis contends that with the insertion of a reformative intervention in the heart of the community promoting a conducive and educational environment while overlaying a currently absent infrastructure, will help in creating a positive inner growth within the informal typology. More specifically architecture will act as a form of "pride of place," enticing interaction through the direction connection to culture.

Bridge_Works, Chris Driscoll Dec 2009

Bridge_Works, Chris Driscoll

Architecture Senior Theses

Building typologies are generally well defined and functionally specific. A church is for worship, a house is for living, and a theater is for performing. In certain instances, these basic building typologies have been combined to form composite structures such as mixed-use housing/retail projects, or a house on a boat. The opportunities created by composite typologies have allowed for broader economic development, more complex and integrated programming, greater utility and richer social structures. A specific combination of typologies--the mix of infrastructural bridge with housing/retail/public space--has produced a few historically successful models[...] Over time, the bridge was developed from a simple …

Didactic Architecture Of The Caribbean Resort, Erwin Riefkohl Dec 2009

Didactic Architecture Of The Caribbean Resort, Erwin Riefkohl

Architecture Senior Theses

I believe that architecture is a communicative artifact that has the capacity to carry meaning. Architecture has the capacity to reconnect us to nature and sympathetic to local Culture. The reconnection is made by the phenomenological experiences that an architectural artifact has the potential to provide. This architecture should be seen as a didactic tool that fosters a hyperawareness of the occurrences in the natural environment. This artifact also reflects to local culture through the engagement of the theory of critical regionalism. As a sum of these two ideas the artifact will be designed with intent to foster meditation on …

Structural Damage Localization With Tolerance To Large Time Synchronization Errors In Wsns, Guirong Yan, Shirley J. Dyke, Wei Song, Gregory Hackmann, Chenyang Lu

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

With Recent Technological Advances in Smart Sensor Platforms, Structural Condition Monitoring Implementations based on Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) Have Received Considerable Attention. Modal Identification is an Integral Step in Many Structural Condition Monitoring Systems. However, Accurate Time Synchronization is Not Always Possible, Leading to Incorrect Identification of the Mode Shapes. Although Strict Time Synchronization of the Wireless Sensors Has Been Viewed as Crucial for the Identification of Mode Shapes, a New Perspective is Taken Herein. the Distortion in the Identified Mode Shapes is Characterized and Accommodated. Then the Resulting Mode Shapes Are Used with a Flexibility-Based Damage Detection Approach to …

Analyzing Equity Impacts Of Transit Fare Changes: Case Study Of Alameda–Contra Costa Transit, California, Cornelius Nuworsoo, Aaron Golub, Elizabeth Deakin Nov 2009

Analyzing Equity Impacts Of Transit Fare Changes: Case Study Of Alameda–Contra Costa Transit, California, Cornelius Nuworsoo, Aaron Golub, Elizabeth Deakin

City and Regional Planning

Many public transit agencies consider increasing fares when faced with budget shortfalls. This paper analyzes the Alameda–Contra Costa (AC) Transit District's five alternative fare proposals introduced for public discussion in March 2005. The proposals combined fare hikes, base fare reductions, eliminations of free transfers, and discontinuation of periodic passes. Using the agency's 2002 on-board survey data, the study assessed the impacts of individual fare proposals on different subsets of riders and evaluated if they were equitable; and estimated potential fare revenues, using alternative price elasticities to estimate changes in ridership due to changes in price. The analysis revealed that proposals …

Targeted Updates To The Bicycle Plan For The University Of Georgia Main Campus, Athens, Georgia, Srikanth Yamala

Community and Regional Planning Program: Professional Projects

Through this Professional Project, the author examines circulation and suitability pertaining to bicycle planning on a college campus, in the real-world setting of the University of Georgia (UGA) main campus located in Athens, Georgia.

Based on existing on-campus activity, bicycle circulation is established. Using an analytical tool, namely the bicycle level of service (BLOS) analysis, roadway segments within the study area are evaluated for suitability with respect to adjacent motor vehicle traffic. Several improvements are suggested throughout the project to enhance the existing BLOS, and in turn enhance the bicycling conditions. Most of the suggestions are based on traditional improvements, …

Do Companies Value Maintaining Iso 9000 Certification? 2009 Case Study Of 41 Us Companies First Certified In 2000, Sarah Joy Namara

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The costs of obtaining and maintaining ISO certification are high. Moreover, studies have shown mixed results on the benefits of the certification. Consequently, the objective of this research was to verify whether or not companies do value maintaining the ISO 9000 certification.

The empirical study was conducted on 41 U.S. companies that were first certified in 2000. The companies formed an existing database as they were used by Dr. Arbuckle in 2004 in his doctoral dissertation. Of the 41 companies, 12 were found to be out of business, leaving a final sample size of 29. Data were gathered from this …

Collaborative Integrative-Interdisciplinary Digital-Design Studio (Cids) 2009, Thomas Fowler Oct 2009

Collaborative Integrative-Interdisciplinary Digital-Design Studio (Cids) 2009, Thomas Fowler

Architecture

The ultimate goals of research and community service projects are to improve how students learn. In architecture, teaching methods should serve as the bridge to industry, helping students to contextualize their class work in the light of their projections for future industry roles. Above all, emphasizing creativity in all its forms in this learning environment is important. Meaningful work by individual students and interdisciplinary collaborative teams must be of the highest quality in order for its contribution to have value. Knitting all of this together is the learning environment, which must provide a mechanism for capture and documentation. The process …

Marginal Lands And Suburban Nature: Open Space Planning And The Case Of The 1893 Boston Metropolitan Parks Plan, Steven Thomas Moga Oct 2009

Marginal Lands And Suburban Nature: Open Space Planning And The Case Of The 1893 Boston Metropolitan Parks Plan, Steven Thomas Moga

Landscape Studies: Faculty Publications

Soon after publication, the 1893 Boston Metropolitan Parks Report came to be regarded as a model plan for American cities. Little known to the public today, it is frequently cited by landscape and planning historians as a testament to the vision of “pioneer” landscape architect Charles Eliot and metropolitan planning advocate Sylvester Baxter. However, planning historians have overlooked key aspects of the plan and omitted significant details about the authors’ redevelopment and planning goals. I argue that Eliot and Baxter viewed open space planning as a means of combating slums and establishing a regionwide land use template for future growth.

1815 Log House: Interpretive Manual, Timothy Mullin Oct 2009

1815 Log House: Interpretive Manual, Timothy Mullin

Library Presentations, Lectures, Research Guides

It is important to understand the different types of house museums and their purposes before we offer information about our own house museum.

There are three basic types of house museums: Documentary, Representative, Decorative. Each type has its purpose and distinct interpretive thrust.

Having very little information about the Felts family, it is impossible to present our museum as the documentary Felts House. A much more realistic interpretive goal is as a representative 1815 Log House. We have used what little bits of information we have about the Felts family, and the rest of our interpretation is taken from the …

Looking Back: Letters Of Persuasion: Posturing For A Carnegie Library In Middlesboro, Jonathan Jeffrey

SCL Faculty and Staff Publications

When making application for a Carnegie Library grant, proponents added letters of support. These letters often described their communities in great detail, providing information about the city's population, the area' cultural and educational institutions, and the dynamics of local government. Writers took this work quite seriously, and some eloquently requested that the "King of Steel" provide funding for a library in their community. This article presents information about the letter writing campaign from Middlesboro, Kentucky, a small town in the southeastern portion of the Commonwealth. It also includes five letters sent to Carnegie from Middlesboro citizens along with biographies of …
