The concept of sustainable design has been one of increasing interest with regards to both personal choices and desire to reduce human impacts on the environment. This paper looks at the concept of sustainable housing design and why it is important. Particularly, it focuses on sustainable housing designs and materials that the McLean County Chapter of Habitat for Humanity can incorporate into the construction of its homes. This paper investigates three types of sustainable construction materials, flooring, cabinetry, and paints that Habitat for Humanity could incorporate into its homes.

Civil Infrastructure Built on Alluviums and Recent Deposits, Such as Dams, Contain Significant Amount of Silts. the Static and Dynamic Behavior of These Fine-Grained Soils Has Been Investigated Less Than the Clay-Like or Sand-Like Soils. Low Plasticity Silts (PI = 6) Obtained East of St. Louis in Illinois Are Known as Loess that Has Been Re-Deposited by Water in the Floodplains of the Mississippi River. My lecture today will question the nature of a thesis project for an undergraduate architectural education. The topic of my lecture – the nature of a thesis – is probably of concern to many of you, either presently engaged in thesis preparations or those of you who will be thinking about your topics in the next few years. I will first question the nature of what a thesis may be and then propose one approach to making a thesis. The third part of the lecture will offer two examples.

Supply Curves For Rooftop Solar Pv-Generated Electricity For The United States, Paul Denholm, Robert Margolis

In this report, we examine several possible methods for generating PV supply curves based exclusively on rooftop deployment. We begin by introducing a framework methodology for a basic supply curve based on estimated distribution of population and buildings, rooftop availability and orientation, and geographical variation in resource. We then discuss limitations to this basic methodology and introduce alternative supply curves that consider additional factors – changes in PV efficiency and configuration, rooftop availability, and grid limitations – while emphasizing the data and methodological limitations to each approach. The Quiet Revolution Revived: Sustainable Design, Land Use Regulation, And The States, Sara C. Bronin

Thirty-seven years ago, a book called The Quiet Revolution in Land Use Control argued that states would soon take over localities' long-held power over land use regulation. In the authors' view, this quiet revolution would occur when policymakers and the public recognized that certain problems - like environmental destruction - were too big for localities to handle on their own. Although the quiet revolution has not yet occurred, this Article suggests that it will, and should, occur alongside the ever-growing green building movement. He was the director of SCI-Arc from 1997 to 2001 and is currently a professor in the Architecture and Urban Design Department at UCLA. "Temple Pro Tempore": The Salt Lake City Endowment House, Lisle G. Brown

The Salt Lake City Endowment House, built of adobe, was located on Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah. It served as a temporary temple during the construction of the Salt Lake Temple. It was completed in 1855 and razed in 1889. Using original floor plans, photographs, maps, and descriptions by persons who participated in its sacretodal activities, the author recreates its exterior and interior appearance. Floor plans and elevations of the building, prepared especially for the paper, are also included. The events leading to is destruction are chronicled. "My objective is to explore the potential of generative design processes driven by user-derived parameters established through computational protocols, algorithms, and simulations resulting in a process embodying ecologies of feedback and performances. Inherent in the designed process is the establishment of feedback, through each cycle of simulation, evaluation, and modification of the geometry.

• The Cultural Site Stewardship Program has now enrolled 376 site stewards

• One training class was held this quarter that adding 12 new volunteers.

• The stewardship had an annual growth of 17.5% during the fiscal year 2008.

• Site Stewards reported 83 significant site impacts in 2008 compared with 63 during the same period last year.

This exhibition produced for the Wistariahurst Museum in Holyoke and displayed in September and October of 2008, highlights community planning and design initiatives that promote cultural expression and community visions for Holyoke. The designs were created by Professor Joseph Krupczynski and students from the Architecture + Design program at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
