Improving Concept Learning In Green Building By Addressing Students' Learning Styles And Prior Knowledge, Sreelatha Chunduri Nov 2008

Improving Concept Learning In Green Building By Addressing Students' Learning Styles And Prior Knowledge, Sreelatha Chunduri

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In green building there is a requirement for the collaboration of students from different disciplines in order to solve challenging problems. Successful collaboration depends on the establishment of a common understanding of the subject matter among those involved. To gain common understanding concept learning is critical. A concept learning process may be improved when factors affecting it are addressed. Prior knowledge and learning styles of the students may influence the way they learn concepts. This thesis is focused on studying the relationship between a concept learning process and prior knowledge and learning styles of students. An experiment was conducted by …

Thesis For A Thesis, Marc J. Neveu Nov 2008

Thesis For A Thesis, Marc J. Neveu

Architecture

My lecture today will question the nature of a thesis project for an undergraduate architectural education. The topic of my lecture – the nature of a thesis – is probably of concern to many of you, either presently engaged in thesis preparations or those of you who will be thinking about your topics in the next few years. I will first question the nature of what a thesis may be and then propose one approach to making a thesis. The third part of the lecture will offer two examples.

Supply Curves For Rooftop Solar Pv-Generated Electricity For The United States, Paul Denholm, Robert Margolis Nov 2008

Supply Curves For Rooftop Solar Pv-Generated Electricity For The United States, Paul Denholm, Robert Margolis

Publications (E)

In this report, we examine several possible methods for generating PV supply curves based exclusively on rooftop deployment. We begin by introducing a framework methodology for a basic supply curve based on estimated distribution of population and buildings, rooftop availability and orientation, and geographical variation in resource. We then discuss limitations to this basic methodology and introduce alternative supply curves that consider additional factors – changes in PV efficiency and configuration, rooftop availability, and grid limitations – while emphasizing the data and methodological limitations to each approach. The resulting curves potentially could be used as inputs to other models or …

The Quiet Revolution Revived: Sustainable Design, Land Use Regulation, And The States, Sara C. Bronin Nov 2008

The Quiet Revolution Revived: Sustainable Design, Land Use Regulation, And The States, Sara C. Bronin

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Thirty-seven years ago, a book called The Quiet Revolution in Land Use Control argued that states would soon take over localities' long-held power over land use regulation. In the authors' view, this quiet revolution would occur when policymakers and the public recognized that certain problems - like environmental destruction - were too big for localities to handle on their own. Although the quiet revolution has not yet occurred, this Article suggests that it will, and should, occur alongside the ever-growing green building movement. This movement presents practical and ideological challenges to our current system of regulating land use. This Article …

"Temple Pro Tempore": The Salt Lake City Endowment House, Lisle G. Brown

Librarian Research

The Salt Lake City Endowment House, built of adobe, was located on Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah. It served as a temporary temple during the construction of the Salt Lake Temple. It was completed in 1855 and razed in 1889. Using original floor plans, photographs, maps, and descriptions by persons who participated in its sacretodal activities, the author recreates its exterior and interior appearance. Floor plans and elevations of the building, prepared especially for the paper, are also included. The events leading to is destruction are chronicled. Finally, the author discusses the building’s influence on subsequent Mormon temple …

Untitled, Darren Poon Oct 2008

Untitled, Darren Poon

Architecture Master Theses

"My objective is to explore the potential of generative design processes driven by user-derived parameters established through computational protocols, algorithms, and simulations resulting in a process embodying ecologies of feedback and performances. Inherent in the designed process is the establishment of feedback, through each cycle of simulation, evaluation, and modification of the geometry.

This thesis project demonstrates a version of these processes specifically examining the performance driven building typology of the massive server farm. Specifically, its implicit correlations with fluid dynamic simulation and its biases toward an optimization of heat dissipation and plan layout. This project is situated between a …

Construction For Art, Will Fellis Oct 2008

Construction For Art, Will Fellis

Architecture Thesis Prep

"When museums draw large crowds and display large collections, there is a lack of personal relationship and understanding of the art.

Small scale museum architecture, in the form of single galleries or pavilions housing only a few pieces by a specific artist or simply expressing the concepts of a certain artist's work, offers and opportunity to create a more intimate relationship between the artwork and the viewer.

The design of a pavilion according to an artist's philosophy will be manifested within the construction. Therefore the detailing of the pavilion will be the point at which the occupant engages the principles …

The Lobby: Volume One, Paul Miller Oct 2008

The Lobby: Volume One, Paul Miller

Architecture Thesis Prep

"There have been many projections of a utopian society where all should have access to humanity's total body of knowledge. With that knowledge, the people would be granted power: But in fact, not many have access to the kind of knowledge that produces power; and many who do don't know how to use it. Knowledge is only power if you control it.

In Washington D.C., a priviledged group of political consultants, the lobbyists, have slowly and steadily gained a tremendous amount of power through their control of information needed by private citizens, corporations, and elected officials. Always the middleman, the …

Sparsification And The Reconsideration Of Contemporary Rural Living, Eric Murphy Oct 2008

Sparsification And The Reconsideration Of Contemporary Rural Living, Eric Murphy

Architecture Thesis Prep

"This thesis asserts that architecture and agriculture must form a symbiotic relationship united by sustainability to redefine contemporary rural living. By challenging outdated traditions, idyllic visions, and preconceived notions of the rural paradigm, it is also possible to reprove a diminishing agrarian lifestyle. Rural architecture must become as productive as the ground it replaces, and as integrated as the crop to the soil. A new model needs to be established to facilitate these assertions and reconsider contemporary rural living."

Vertical Neighborhood : Urban Density In New Beijing, Ben Dennis

Architecture Thesis Prep

"My project is a critique od the current architecture of Beijing and its inability to transfer the values, rituals, and social programs of traditional domestic architecture into a rapidly changing contemporary context.

Through translating the courtyard house, a new model for dense domestic space can be created that maintains the salient qualities of the type and in its communal environment, while responding to the new verticality of Beijing."

Mil_Civ Immersive Surface, Elizabeth M. Quick Oct 2008

Mil_Civ Immersive Surface, Elizabeth M. Quick

Architecture Thesis Prep

"The pervasive proliferation of complex tracking systems such as GPS and simulation gaming environments such as Full Spectrum Warrior are transforming the built environment into an immersive 1:1 map where all flows and transactions are measured, monitored, and tracked. The gap between map and real experience disappears resulting in an immersive map. The spatial implications of this real time 1:1 immersive map creates an opportunity for architecture itself to monitor, track, and measure flows and transactions. This tracking and simulation agenda plays out specifically in the design of a surface that integrates military training, military artifacts, and civilian recreation into …
