The Greatest Advancement Since The Shovel: Remote Sensing On Three Historical Case Studies, Ian B. Kerr
The Greatest Advancement Since The Shovel: Remote Sensing On Three Historical Case Studies, Ian B. Kerr
Pell Scholars and Senior Theses
This thesis, as both a research and exploratory-driven investigation, seeks to investigate the effectiveness of using remote sensing technology on historical case studies. If the technology reveals itself to be beneficial in understanding historical landscapes, then it will be prognosticate on future archaeological excavations on those locations, based on the inferences and conclusions, gained from the remote sensing images.

Stormwater Quality And Local Government Innovation, Stacey Swearingen White, Michael R. Boswell
Stormwater Quality And Local Government Innovation, Stacey Swearingen White, Michael R. Boswell
City and Regional Planning
Local governments need innovative practices to address nonpoint source pollution, which has proven to be the Achilles heel of efforts to improve surface water quality in the United States. Studies by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) determined that 45% of assessed lakes and 39% of assessed rivers in the nation are polluted, and that agricultural and urban runoff were the primary sources of these problems (EPA, 2000, 2002). New approaches to address runoff are clearly necessary, and their success will depend on local government practices, yet we know little about how and why local governments innovate, particularly in response …

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses
In architectural practice professionals deal with a number of fascinating issues daily. From clients to contractors, politics to energy concerns, material usage to money management, architects of the world have the amazing task of delivering a product that influences the physical and mental environments of its users. Evolving from a conversation regarding urban sprawl and suburban housing, this project is aimed at finding a way to inform as well as plant a seed of impact in our rapidly expanding cities. Whereas in local contemporary developments like Fallbrook, (a residential development on the northwest side of Lincoln) the single family house …

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses
Every year, millions of vacationers escape their daily routines to find peace and relaxation in tropical locations that differ from the worlds they come from. Vacations are becoming more elaborate and the list of destinations is continually being enlarged as the availability of air travel reaches more and more places. Yet as commercialism enters these regions and investors begin cornering the market, the essence of these once exotic locations seems to get overlooked and in time, ultimately forgotten. Places that once consisted of straw huts and bamboo bungalows are now being confronted with crude, insensitive designs that neglect the landscape …

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses
Bus stops and bus shelters vary throughout the world reflecting the environment around them and the needs of the community. From a hard stick in the ground in India, hammocks hanging from a tree in Galapagos, or a rounded glass and steel structure in London; bus stops are simultaneously a gathering place and a place to depart from, a place to watch others and a place to be watched, a place to be protected from the elements while being integrated into the environment. Bus stops are both the beginning and the end.

MIRA/LOOK: New Visions for Architecture in Holyoke (2008)
This studio promotes creative research and conceptually rigorous design methodologies that aim to illuminate, situate, and contest the complex circumstances within which a truly “sustainable” architecture can emerge — an architecture capable of escaping a narrow technological focus, while addressing the broader social and theoretical implications of sustainability. The interplay between site, culture and program is a key focus of the studio. Through critical assessments of a broad range of specific site conditions students develop investigative strategies for responsive architectural interventions that bridge the gap between theory and practice. This semester we will be working on a series of projects …

Crossection: An Exploration Into Assembling Sustainability, Brian Goehle
Architecture Thesis Prep
"The field of architecture sits at a crossroad today, we have an opportunity to rethink the way we design using new materials and building techniques to reduce the negative impact architecture has on the wider environment. As architects, we must critically look at our constructions methods and question whether they are appropriate and the best choices we could be making for the environment. My thesis has generated a framework that used a set of sustainable materials that outperform their conventional alternatives, to produce affordable and highly efficiently built homes that leave a neutral impact on the environment."

Thinking Outside The Box: New Approaches To Very Large Flexible Diaphragms, John W. Lawson
Thinking Outside The Box: New Approaches To Very Large Flexible Diaphragms, John W. Lawson
Architectural Engineering
This paper discusses the past design practices of flexible diaphragms, the current trend to very large diaphragms, and the new tools available to properly evaluate and engineer these large roof systems. Higher shear demands are accommodated by higher plywood/OSB and steel deck shear capacities accepted by the IBe. A new collective chord technique is presented to more accurately reflect large diaphragm behavior. In addition, these very large diaphragms have significant lateral deflection issues that can now be evaluated in the IBC. The new AF&PA deflection equations for wood diaphragms are presented as well as a technique to compute deflections of …

Educating The Ethical Practitioner, Marc J. Neveu
Architecture
My talk today will be about my own thoughts regarding architecture education. My intention is not dictate a method for others to follow, but rather to open up a discussion of a topic that is central to many of us. I will begin with the findings of a study made by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching on architecture education known as the Boyer Report. I will then discuss the work of Donald Schön as it supports the report’s general conclusions. Though I see much merit in Schön’s proposals as well as the assessment made by the Boyer …
Deflection Limits For Tilt-Up Wall Serviceability - The History Behind Changes To Chapter 14 Of Aci 318, John Lawson
Deflection Limits For Tilt-Up Wall Serviceability - The History Behind Changes To Chapter 14 Of Aci 318, John Lawson
Architectural Engineering
Tilt-up construction is one of the most ubiquitous forms of commercial construction in many parts of the country. Thanks to its efficient wall and roof systems, more than 700 million ft2 (65 million m2) of tilt-up buildings were constructed in the U.S. in 2006.1
Tilt-up's current popularity is even more remarkable considering that it wasn't until the 1980s that building codes began to recognize the unique design of slender tilt-up wall panels. In fact, it wasn't until ACI 318-992 was published that the design of slender wall panels was codified on a national level. Of …

Scattered Responses From Suspended Reflector Panels With Rounded Edges, Jonathan Rathsam, Lily M. Wang
Scattered Responses From Suspended Reflector Panels With Rounded Edges, Jonathan Rathsam, Lily M. Wang
Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications
Sound reflections from most finite surfaces, such as overhead reflector panels, include a component known as edge diffraction. Edge diffraction is the scattered energy required to maintain a continuous sound field despite the discontinuity in acoustical impedance presented by the scatterer. Edge diffraction can interfere with primary scattered energy to produce comb filtering at receiver locations. Several decades ago, the effect of changing the edge profile of loudspeaker boxes was investigated with the goal of producing a smoother frequency response. By rounding the edges of loudspeaker boxes, the edge diffraction could be decreased noticeably [H. F. Olson, J. Aud. Eng. …
