Stone has been a primary building material for millennia. Cities, therefore, are treasure troves of earth materials. A wide variety of stones from many places are used for walls, as foundations to support entire buildings, as trim, and more recently as cladding (facing, an overlay). The Earth science teacher can find, in the limited space of an urban environment, a superb collection of stones with which to introduce students to these materials. The surfaces of stones on the outsides of buildings illustrate the durability and the vulnerability of each kind of stone to the local climate. And the history of …

How Does Increasing Population And Diversity Affect Resident Satisfaction? A Small Community Case Study, James J. Potter, Rodrigo Cantarero
Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity
This study examines the quality of life in Crete, Nebraska, with the specific purpose of identifying the factors that play the largest role in determining residential satisfaction. The survey asks a number of questions pertaining to different aspects of living in Crete. The survey is adapted from a survey previously used for a similar study in Schuyler, Nebraska. Focus groups are used to identify key issues in Crete and make adjustments to the questionnaire. Cronbach’s alpha is used to test the reliability of the topical variables, and index variables are created, which are used in the subsequent analysis. Using residential …

The Most Notable Antiquity of Great Britain, Vulgarly Called Stone- Heng, on Salisbury Plain (London, 1655) is the only publication associated with Inigo Jones (1573-1652), Surveyor for Prince Henry, King James I, and King Charles I. However, the precise nature of Jones's contribution to this work is much debated, his authorship being challenged. Jones's supposed lack of learning has led scholars to believe that Jones had little or no involvement in the work. However, new evidence suggests that Jones possessed far more extensive learning than has previously been credited to him. Indeed, this essay will show the nature of collaboration …

Recent interest in expanding offshore oil production within waters of the United States has been met with opposition by groups concerned with recreational, environmental, and aesthetic values associated with the coastal zone. Although the proposition of new oil platforms off the coast has generated conflict over how coastal resources should be utilized, little research has been conducted on where these user conflicts might be most intense and which sites might be most suitable for locating oil production facilities in light of the multiple, and often times, competing interests. Severe ice storms occur every year in the United States and Canada, particularly in the midwestern and eastern regions of the United States. Along with fires and wind, ice storms are a frequent and major natural disturbance factor in eastern deciduous forests. Likewise ice storms are responsible for deaths and injuries of people and cause dramatic damage and tree loss to urban forests. Ice storms annually result in millions of dollars in loss, and potentially billions of dollars in losses for extreme and widespread ice storms.
