Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships In Affordable Rental Housing: An Investigation Using Soft Systems Framework, Connie Susilawati, Martin Skitmore, Lynne Armitage Aug 2005

Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships In Affordable Rental Housing: An Investigation Using Soft Systems Framework, Connie Susilawati, Martin Skitmore, Lynne Armitage

Lynne Armitage

Queensland Department of Housing has proposed partnerships as one possible option to deliver affordable housing. Although this initiative is supported by other stakeholders, many constraints have impeded its implementation for real projects. It might be applicable for mixed housing projects with some relaxation on tax and/or planning requirements. In general, affordable housing has not been seen as a valuable investment. Moreover, the partnerships require stakeholders to work across boundaries and outside their comfort zones.

This initial study examines the use of Soft System Framework to explore stakeholders’ views of multi-stakeholder partnerships in affordable rental housing. A series of in-depth ...

Time-Series Analysis Of Clusters In City Size Distributions, Ahjond S. Garmestani, Craig R. Allen, K. Michael Bessey Aug 2005

Time-Series Analysis Of Clusters In City Size Distributions, Ahjond S. Garmestani, Craig R. Allen, K. Michael Bessey

Nebraska Cooperative Fish & Wildlife Research Unit -- Staff Publications

Complex systems, such as urban systems, emerge unpredictably without the influence of central control as a result of adaptive behavior by their component, interacting agents. This paper analyses city size distributions, by decade, from the south-western region of the United States for the years 1890–1990. It determines if the distributions were clustered and documents changes in the pattern of clusters over time. Clusters were determined utilizing a kernel density estimator and cluster analysis. The data were clustered as determined by both methods. The analyses identified 4–7 clusters of cities in each of the decades analysed. Cities cluster into ...

Urban And Regional Planning: A Review Of Three Rational Planning Processes, Mark Joseph Taylor Aug 2005

Urban And Regional Planning: A Review Of Three Rational Planning Processes, Mark Joseph Taylor

Masters Theses

The rational planning process is a widely accepted method to guide the profession of Urban and Regional Planning. After a literature review, limited and incomplete information was found concerning the rational planning process.

A comparison was conducted among three documented rational planning processes. A common labeling system identifying all the concepts within each process was developed in order to examine the steps within each process for similarities and variations. The three areas focused on are the sequential ordering, labeling and defining of steps within the processes.

The inconsistent sequential ordering, labeling and defining of steps detailing the rational planning model ...

Subverting The Panopticon: Privacy In The Public Realm, Stephen Collins Aug 2005

Subverting The Panopticon: Privacy In The Public Realm, Stephen Collins

Masters Theses

The Panopticon, designed by Jeremy Bentham in 1787, is an architectural device based on isolation of people and surveillance -knowledge focused in places of power. The Panopticon was influential as an architectural paradigm, easily adapted to varied uses. Bentham as did other utilitarian eighteenth century philosophers believed the built environment could fabricate virtue.

The techniques of the Panopticon were applied to the central task of fabricating normality, rather than the peripheral task of rectifying abnormality. Michel Foucault brought the moral engineering to the fore and showed that it was put in place to conduct 'normatively self-disciplining subjects.' As normative control ...

Anchoring Perception Through Tactile Orientation, David L. Bouldin Jr. Aug 2005

Anchoring Perception Through Tactile Orientation, David L. Bouldin Jr.

Masters Theses

The sense of touch concretizes our perception by adding a perceptual quality stronger than the other senses. This haptic dimension also encompasses a sense of orientation, balance, and movement in the spatial experience of architectural works. This important sense has been neglected and must be re-emphasized as a worthy architectural design goal. In urban settings, the other senses are bombarded with sensory input while tactility is often denied. Public libraries are in a position to serve the haptic dimension over the other senses because of the nature of their (dynamically changing) services. Special care must be taken to design a ...

Civil Rights In Action: Creating Art On The Borderline A Visual Arts Cultural Center For Memphis, Tennessee, Melissa Anne Ruff

Masters Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to explore opportunities for communication in the racially divided city of Memphis, Tennessee. A center for the study of the visual arts is proposed for the platform of communication. This study contends that a well-planned and well-designed architecture can serve as a location for communication for people from divergent backgrounds.

The history of the racial divide and the contemporary racial separation are both explored in this study. Approaches to healing the wounds created through years of division are also investigated. This thesis contends that a building for the creation and study of the visual ...

The Analogy Of Skin In Architecture Revisited, Rene Croteau Jul 2005

The Analogy Of Skin In Architecture Revisited, Rene Croteau

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis re-examines the implications of skin as an architectural analogy. The metaphor of skin has a long history o f usage in architecture, particularly regarding the building enclosure system. This thesis focuses on the role o f the built skin as a place of interaction between the inside and outside, rather than a simple physical barrier. Through an examination of the structure and functions of human skin and building enclosures I investigated issues o f permeability in the design of a center for cartographic research in Miami Beach. I explored layering and interdigitation as strategies for controlling the passage ...

Residential Security Maps And Neighborhood Appraisals. The Homeowners' Loan Corporation And The Case Of Philadelphia, Amy E. Hillier Jul 2005

Residential Security Maps And Neighborhood Appraisals. The Homeowners' Loan Corporation And The Case Of Philadelphia, Amy E. Hillier

Departmental Papers (City and Regional Planning)

At the request of the Home Loan Bank Board, the Home Owners’ Loan Corporation (HOLC) created color-coded maps for cities across the country between 1935 and 1940 that indicated risk levels for long-term real estate investment. Involvement in this City Survey Program marked a departure from the original mission of HOLC to provide new mortgages on an emergency basis to homeowners at risk of losing their homes during the Depression. This article considers why HOLC made these maps, how HOLC created them, and what the basis was for the grades on the maps. Geographic information systems and spatial regression models ...

Climate, Margot Mcdonald Jun 2005

Climate, Margot Mcdonald

Architecture

As with any building project, climate has an enormous impact on building and site energy and water consumption, the potential for on-site electrical power generation, indoor environmental quality in terms of thermal comfort and daylighting opportunities, and the creation of protected outdoor environments as extensions of interior spaces. In order to assess the site-climate design potential designers, users, and building owners need to consider issues revealed by quantitative, scientific data of existing conditions, qualitative regional or microclimatic principles that optimize building form, organization, and materials based on this understanding, and simulations of future design alternatives. This paper discusses the relevant ...

Managing Cultural Heritage: Heritage Listing And Property Value, Lynne Armitage, Janine Irons Jun 2005

Managing Cultural Heritage: Heritage Listing And Property Value, Lynne Armitage, Janine Irons

Lynne Armitage

Local governments across Australia are often placed in the invidious position of acknowledging the long term value to the community of a property or place by including it in a heritage register whilst alienating some current, often vocal, sectors of that community who raise concerns over an actual or perceived loss of individual, usually proprietary, rights. Whilst such conflicts of interest are inevitable, the necessity to manage such situations sensitively and effectively remains the lot of the local authority. In order to assist with the appropriate management of such situations, a study has been undertaken into the effects of heritage ...

Visualizing Complexity : A Spatial Analysis Of Decorative Geometric Pattern In The Islamic World, 900-1400 Ad, Tracy Elizabeth Harrison

Dissertations and Theses

This study explores how the use of complex decorative geometric patterns in Islamic architecture spatially relates to advances in the fields of science and philosophy in the Islamic world between the ninth and fourteenth centuries. This project examines hypotheses developed by vario~s scholars on the forces that shaped the use of these patterns (known as the geometric mode) in Islamic architecture. The prevailing assumption that advances in mathematics contributed to the use of the geometric mode is used as a starting point for subsequent analysis.

For this study, two spatial databases were created. One contains over two hundred and ...
