Architectural Lessons Of Carlo Lodoli (1690-1761): Indole Of Material And Of Self, Marc J. Neveu

Carlo Lodoli (1690-1761) exists as a footnote in most major history books of modern architecture. He is typically noted for either his influence on the Venetian Neoclassical tradition or as an early prophet to some sort of functionalism. Though I would not argue his influence, I doubt his role in the development of a structurally determined functionalism. The issue of influence is always present as very little of his writings have survived and his built work amounts to a few windowsills. He did, however, teach architecture. I propose to explore the pedagogic potential of Lodoli’s lessons of architecture.

As any undergraduate knows, architectural history is a relentlessly visual subject. It is not impossible, but exceedingly difficult to make a convincing argument through words alone. Words must talk to pictures, in the absence of buildings, and pictures must join together to form a visual argument that is an analogue of the text. As with any building project, climate has an enormous impact on building and site energy and water consumption, the potential for on-site electrical power generation, indoor environmental quality in terms of thermal comfort and daylighting opportunities, and the creation of protected outdoor environments as extensions of interior spaces. This paper illustrates the design work from an integrated third year Architecture Design Studio and Environmental Controls Systems (ECS) Studio. As the final project, all students developed a ‘Center for the Study of Light’, based on the quarter long experiments with light. The quarter began with spatial experiments with both day and electric lighting. In the ECS course students started with several physical model interpretations of James Turrell’s electric light installations and in the Design Studio several full-scaled working versions of Moholy Nagy’s Light Space Modular were constructed to explore the connection of movement, light, space and materials.
