Campus Planning Reports and Plans
Facilities & Campus Services, Sustainable UMass and Campus Planning support sustainability and energy conservation initiatives by providing in-house resources to campus staff as well as designers and contractors working with the University. The UMass Amherst Green Building Guidelines provide a framework for approaching new construction and major renovation projects at UMass Amherst that are undergoing LEED certification by focusing the conversation on green building aspects that are most important to the campus. They are intended to be the beginning of a dynamic conversation between designers, environmental consultants and constructors, university stakeholders, and users of new high performance buildings.

Architecture and Urban Design
The new shelter should incorporate improved natural lighting and ventilation, adequate space for laundry facilities and more space for the animals' living and bathing needs. The design should consider how to prevent dogs from barking and disturbing one another while in the kennels. Increased storage is necessary for the animal shelter to contain the food and living amenities for the incoming animals.

A Financial Impact Assessment Of Ld 1725: Stream Crossings, New England Environmental Finance Center, Muskie School Of Public Service
A Financial Impact Assessment Of Ld 1725: Stream Crossings, New England Environmental Finance Center, Muskie School Of Public Service
Water
This report looks at the potential financial impact of LD 1725 on the estimated 30,000 stream crossings in the State of Maine that would be affected by the law. Our research for this report included the analysis of nearly 2000 stream crossings and the data collection necessary for the development of extensive stream crossing replacement cost models. We found that the 1.2 bankfull requirements in LD 1725 would result in a 75% ‐ 250% increase in structure widths for stream crossing projects across the state. An upsize of this magnitude would increase the cost of replacing stream crossings statewide by …

Construction Cost Models, Barry Dikeman
Economics and Finance
The following are a series of cost estimate models similar in format to a typical engineer’s estimate that were developed in support of our financial impact assessment report for LD 1725. The models us current material costs, labor costs, and equipment costs for the region to provide a comparative cost analysis of seven culvert replacement scenarios. The models provide information about what the cost impact of LD 1725 would be for typical culvert replacements in Maine. However, due to the inherent restrictions of the cost modeling framework we were not able to include the abundance of variables that would be …

Contradiction And Duality Within The City: The House Of Arts And Culture, Andrei Sdrula
Contradiction And Duality Within The City: The House Of Arts And Culture, Andrei Sdrula
Architecture Theses
This project aims to apply the concepts of contradiction and duality as described in the manifesto to reinvigorate and reconnect a portion of the city Bucharest: the capital of Romania. This city has a long history of architectural achievements and disasters, and this intervention gets to the heart of that legacy when it confronts the House of Parliament: a massive megalomaniacal building constructed under the Ceausescu regime in the 1980s. The project addresses the parliament, sector, city, country, and people with first: a master plan, and then a civic building within that master plan that is located in front of …
The Use Of A Multi-Criteria Decision Model To Choose Between Different Structural Forms Within Modern Office Construction, Margaret Rogers
The Use Of A Multi-Criteria Decision Model To Choose Between Different Structural Forms Within Modern Office Construction, Margaret Rogers
Masters
In 1993 the Steel Construction Institute carried out an economic analysis (including frame and overall construction time) of a number of structural options, for what is regarded as atypical office building, in outer Manchester. The study was later updated in 2004 due to changes in cost and new forms of construction notably the ‘slimdeck’ system. In 1994 the Steel Construction Institute carried out a study with regard to initial embodied energy on
the same structural options considered in the 1993 publication.
This Project carries out a similar analysis of the 10 structural forms previously analysed by the Steel Construction Institute …

Managing Risks Associated With The Jbcc(Principal Building Agreement) From Thesouth African Contractor’S Perspective, Ayman Ahmed Ezzat Othman, Nishani Harinarain
Architectural Engineering
Construction is a complex and risky business. It is a time-consuming process involving a multitude of organisations with different objectives and skills. In addition, increasing client expectations coupled with the technological development of materials and equipment made the construction industry subject to more risks than any other industry. Contracts are essential tools for organising the relationship between involved parties and managing associated risk. For years the South African construction industry had a very poor reputation in managing construction risks. In order to improve the image of the South African construction industry and to assist contractors to develop their proper risk …
The Feasibility Of Incorporating Sustainable Materials In The Design Of Habitat For Humanity Homes, Meaghan Collins, '09
The Feasibility Of Incorporating Sustainable Materials In The Design Of Habitat For Humanity Homes, Meaghan Collins, '09
Outstanding Senior Seminar Papers
The concept of sustainable design has been one of increasing interest with regards to both personal choices and desire to reduce human impacts on the environment. This paper looks at the concept of sustainable housing design and why it is important. Particularly, it focuses on sustainable housing designs and materials that the McLean County Chapter of Habitat for Humanity can incorporate into the construction of its homes. This paper investigates three types of sustainable construction materials, flooring, cabinetry, and paints that Habitat for Humanity could incorporate into its homes.

Sabbatical Leave Report, Ted Becker
Sabbaticals
As new technology rapidly changes the construction industry, we feel it is imperative that our programs are restructured to reflect these changes. In order to accomplish the goals of this sabbatical leave, I was to visit with our program advisory committee and a diverse group of companies and government agencies that would be willing to discuss what new technology they are using, or give us advice on additions and changes needed in our program. Our goal is to prepare out students with the most up-to-date and relative education that meets the industry entry level employment needs. The second objective is …

Redwood National Park and Prairie Creek State Park are coordinating a project to remove those portions of Ah Pah Road, East Ridge Road. and S-Line and B-Line spurs, located in the SE qt. sec. 3 and in sec. 11, 12Nl, all within Park boundaries. Since construction of the Highway 101 Bypass, Ah Pah Road no longer accesses the Klamath River from Prairie Creek State Park. East Ridge Road will continue as a trail to access dedicated groves and the Hope Creek-Ten Tapo Loop Trail. To assess possible impacts of the project on historic resources and to develop a history of …
Optimal Width And Depth For Maximum Breaking Load Of Wood Beams, Steven H. Bullard, Vikram Yadama
Optimal Width And Depth For Maximum Breaking Load Of Wood Beams, Steven H. Bullard, Vikram Yadama
Faculty Publications
The strength of solid wood beams is an important property to consider in construction. Such beams do not receive further primary processing after leaving the sawmill, and their quality and strength properties are therefore determined by their initial, primary breakdown at the sawmill. The most efficient means of controlling the quality of solid wood beams is thus at the sawmill level. This paper presents a method of determining the width and depth of solid beams that will maximize breaking load.
