Stormwater Quality And Local Government Innovation, Stacey Swearingen White, Michael R. Boswell
Stormwater Quality And Local Government Innovation, Stacey Swearingen White, Michael R. Boswell
City and Regional Planning
Local governments need innovative practices to address nonpoint source pollution, which has proven to be the Achilles heel of efforts to improve surface water quality in the United States. Studies by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) determined that 45% of assessed lakes and 39% of assessed rivers in the nation are polluted, and that agricultural and urban runoff were the primary sources of these problems (EPA, 2000, 2002). New approaches to address runoff are clearly necessary, and their success will depend on local government practices, yet we know little about how and why local governments innovate, particularly in response …

MIRA/LOOK: New Visions for Architecture in Holyoke (2008)
This studio promotes creative research and conceptually rigorous design methodologies that aim to illuminate, situate, and contest the complex circumstances within which a truly “sustainable” architecture can emerge — an architecture capable of escaping a narrow technological focus, while addressing the broader social and theoretical implications of sustainability. The interplay between site, culture and program is a key focus of the studio. Through critical assessments of a broad range of specific site conditions students develop investigative strategies for responsive architectural interventions that bridge the gap between theory and practice. This semester we will be working on a series of projects …

The World Changed Today: A Ten Year Reflection For A Climate Changing World, Paul Wack
The World Changed Today: A Ten Year Reflection For A Climate Changing World, Paul Wack
City and Regional Planning
In this article Paul Wack offers us a reflection on two of the most important issues for the planning profession: climate change and the public’s short attention span. He starts by addressing a 1895 poem depicting an optimistic view of the future which the late musician John Denver used to recite during his concerts, and in which Paul finds much inspiration for his classes. The article also ties into the next one, titled “Hot Topic”, dealing with the same theme and originally published in the APA’s Planning magazine.

Allagash Wilderness Waterway Working Group On Structure, Management And Oversight: Choosing Common Ground And Moving Ahead, Allagash Wilderness Waterway Working Group
Maine History & Policy Development
In his June 19, 2006, Executive Order, Governor John E. Baldacci directed the Working Group to “offer its best guidance and advice to the Governor respecting the long-term governance, management, and oversight structure for the Allagash Wilderness Waterway” (AWW). In the intervening six months the members of the Working Group have engaged in an examination of the forty-year history of the Waterway and an analysis of the conditions and circumstance that led to the Governor’s Executive Order. We have reviewed documentation of the AWW history, taken testimony at numerous public meetings and hearings, conducted correspondence with members of the several …

Collaboration Between Architects And Planners In An Urban Design Studio: Potential For Interdisciplinary Learning, Sonia Hirt, Andreas Luescher
Collaboration Between Architects And Planners In An Urban Design Studio: Potential For Interdisciplinary Learning, Sonia Hirt, Andreas Luescher
Architecture and Environmental Design Faculty Publications
Design professionals need to acquire competencies in interdisciplinary, collaborative design practice. Proceeding from this assumption, this paper analyses a case study of a joint project between an architecture studio at Bowling Green State University and a planning seminar at the University of Toledo. Students working in extramural teams developed proposals for the revitalization of a plaza in Toledo, an historic city in Ohio. The plaza, which in architectural terms represents a blend of Gilded-Age finery, high-order contemporary work and stretches of decay, is in the process of slow regeneration. The main goals were: 1) pedagogical - to enhance the students' …
