Getting To “Why?”, Gregory S. Palermo
Getting To “Why?”, Gregory S. Palermo
Architecture Conference Proceedings and Presentations
This is a case study of the development of a learning outcomes centered, large lecture, introductory design theory course, and a best practices presentation of active learning exercises aimed at getting to ‘Why?’ from ‘What?’. Getting to ‘Why?’ is a principal objective for me in large-lecture undergraduate education. In 1996 and 2003 I participated in developing required foundation theory courses for architecture and design averaging 220-260 students per section. Central to both are active learning exercises for analyzing the concrete ‘Who, what, where and when?’ to discern a ‘Why?’. This paper addresses the importance of ‘Why?’, and the learning outcomes ...

Situating Design, Gregory S. Palermo
Architecture Conference Proceedings and Presentations
This is a case study of the development of a new Core curriculum course at the Iowa State University (ISU) College of Design (CoD). It relates an overview of the creation of the course and sample learning exercises that activate a large lecture class. Historically, the CoD separated first-year students into discipline specific studies, narrowing, we believe, their perspectives about design. A Task Force analyzed learning outcomes of the first year programs, and proposed a more interdisciplinary conception of design education. The CoD committed itself to creating a Core foundation year of design studies, which students in Architecture, Landscape Architecture ...

Persistence, Adaptation And Diversity, Lynn Paxson, David Saile, Joseph Juhasz, Rubén Martinez
Architecture Conference Proceedings and Presentations
Traditions aren't static. They change and adapt over time to various circumstances. Cultures and identities are always evolving. It's instructive to look at what aspects of cultures and identities persist over time and what aspects of other cultures maybe 'assimilated' or 'acculturated' into the existing belief structure of another culture.
Rethinking Native Learning Environments, Bob Mohr, Brodie Bain, Lynn Paxson
Rethinking Native Learning Environments, Bob Mohr, Brodie Bain, Lynn Paxson
Architecture Conference Proceedings and Presentations
This symposium will present three projects and three explorations into creating learning environments for Native communities. The projects range from a high school that· drew Native students from many tribal nations across the country, to a tribal (2-year) college that serves primarily one Native nation but is open to students from tribes from around the Pacific Northwest, to one of the oldest tribal universities ( 4-year) in the country which serves students from multiple Native nations. All three of these institutions have dealt in different ways with the idea of helping their students "walk in two worlds" or function in two ...

Creating Learning Environments More Supportive Of Diversity: An Ongoing Working Group, James Potter, Sherry Ahrentzen, Kathryn Anthony, Arlena Hines, Roberta Null, Lynn Paxson, Lynda Schneekloth, David Stea, Tom Witt
Architecture Conference Proceedings and Presentations
At EDRA 31 in San Francisco we convened a working group to discuss issues related to creating learning environments more supportive of diversity. It has been five years since we last met. We believe it is time to revisit the issues of diversity in the leammg environment to see what gains we have made, if any, and what more we can do.
What Forces That Shape And Retain The Beijing Courtyard Houses?, Chiu-Shui Chan, Ying Xiong
What Forces That Shape And Retain The Beijing Courtyard Houses?, Chiu-Shui Chan, Ying Xiong
Architecture Conference Proceedings and Presentations
The type of courtyard house, as found within the Inner City of Beijing, is a well-developed Chinese housing typology. All houses in this area share a homogeneous pattern and texture in form and spatial layout. Particularly, certain distinguishing features can be easily identified across houses. This paper explains: (1) the outstanding features found in almost all courtyard houses in the city of Beijing, as well as in other cities across China, (2) the reasons why these features were preserved for more than two thousand years, (3) the socio-cultural driving forces that have maintained these features historically, and (4) the challenges ...
How Real Is The Sense Of Presence In A Virtual Environment?: Applying Protocol Analysis For Data Collection, Chiu-Shui Chan, Chien-Hui Weng
How Real Is The Sense Of Presence In A Virtual Environment?: Applying Protocol Analysis For Data Collection, Chiu-Shui Chan, Chien-Hui Weng
Architecture Conference Proceedings and Presentations
This study attempts to investigate the sense of presence in a fully immersive virtual environment. The methodology applied in this study used protocol analysis for data collection. A preliminary experiment was conducted to explore noticeable phenomena to develop a hypothesis for the final experiments. Four different virtual reality models, representing four different kinds of virtual space, were navigated in C6 (CAVE facilities) by two human subjects. Results of the research in this direction have provided valuable understanding regarding the sense of presence in the virtual environment.

Negoiated Stories In Public Space, Lynn Paxson, Joseph B. Juhasz, Heidi Hohmann, Ashley Kyber, Clare Robinson
Architecture Conference Proceedings and Presentations
Design professionals and environmental social scientists understand the human modified environment as a material production of cultures. As a result, we also support the idea of spaces as communicative. The contextually defined relations between objects, places, and people communicate the values, decisions, and choices made throughout a broadly defined process of placemaking. Places have meanings, they tell stories. Thus "narrating" is one aspect or part of deCerteau's conception of spatial practices (de Certeau, 1984, xiv). Yet because values differ, the same place may tell different stories to different people.
Exploring Diverse Land Ethics, Joseph B. Juhasz, Lynn Paxson, Rubén Martinez
Exploring Diverse Land Ethics, Joseph B. Juhasz, Lynn Paxson, Rubén Martinez
Architecture Conference Proceedings and Presentations
Different cultures do not share the same relationship( s) with the land, the natural environment, and the cosmos. For some cultures in fact these three labels are all synonymous, while for others clear distinctions are understood through their use/invocation. In addition the role or relationship ofhumans with the land, the natural environment, and the cosmos varies among different groups and cultures. These multiple value systems and epistemologies have shaped cultures and impacted the relations between these many groups. Some might argue that these differences, or this diversity is one of the major reasons that different cultures in contact often ...

Diverse Participation And Participation In Diversity, Lynn Paxson, Caitlin Cahill, Patsy Eubanks Owens, Baldev Lamba
Architecture Conference Proceedings and Presentations
This Participation Network sponsored working group creates a venue to consider a number of current participatory design and research projects and continues similar sessions held at past edra conferences. In conjunction with other, topic or user group sessions which include a participatory focus this session allows the work of edra members to be critically discussed and debated from many points of view while still in progress.
A 3d Model Of The Inner City Of Beijing, Chiu-Shui Chan, Dang Anrong, Tong Ziyu
A 3d Model Of The Inner City Of Beijing, Chiu-Shui Chan, Dang Anrong, Tong Ziyu
Architecture Conference Proceedings and Presentations
This study has two major concentrations: 1) exploring methods of creating a digital city model, and 2) applying the model to study urban spatial structure, an issue of particular interest and importance to urban planners. Based on existing studies that primarily address two-dimensional (2D) urban structure, this paper focuses on the three-dimensional (3D) structure relating to the 3D urban form. Given their greater clarity and possibilities for quantitative analysis, both 3D digital urban models and GIS spatial overlay analysis methods hold tremendous potential for analysing and predicting future urban form. In this project, the Xidan Business District in Beijing’s ...
