Industry In The Southern Thames Street Neighborhood Of Newport, Rhode Island, 1820 -1920, Daniel P. Titus

Faculty and Staff - Articles & Papers

In the study of Industry in the Southern Thames Street Neighborhood of Newport, Rhode Island from 1820 -1920 we by necessity must touch, even if ever so slightly, on the history of industry in Newport, not just the District, both before and after that time period. We must try to understand what life was like for the residents of the District and the city. We must try to understand what was happening in the area, the city, and in a larger sense, the region to get an understanding of the social and economic forces at play on their everyday lives ...

Trust, Collaboration, And Financial Return In Conservation/Development Partnerships, New England Environmental Finance Center Dec 2003

Trust, Collaboration, And Financial Return In Conservation/Development Partnerships, New England Environmental Finance Center

Economics and Finance

In early 2002 the New England Environmental Finance Center hosted a series of roundtable discussions among municipal officials, residential developers, land trust representatives, and others about "Innovative Approaches to Land Conservation and Smart Growth". Among our observations was that for many of the over 20 conservation/development partnerships we discussed in the series, creation and maintenance of trust was central to success or failure of various stages of the partnership. This suggested a link between creation of trust and financial return for traditionally opposed project partners.

To further examine this matter, we interviewed 11 round table participants and asked questions ...

Kinetic Performance : A Study In Portable Architecture, Ernest Brian Abuin Nov 2003

Kinetic Performance : A Study In Portable Architecture, Ernest Brian Abuin

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to explore a new way of experiencing a performance space using the portability and flexibility of a cargo container. Since the 17th century there has been a split between theater, as a written work, and architecture. Theater has lost its founding essence becoming more about the structure and less about the performance.

Contemporary theater designs came through the development of street performances, which developed into theater types such as the Black Box and lately video and projection screening. With the exploration of kinetic uses in architecture and defragmentation of a cargo container there is ...

Updating Bridge Reliability Based On Bridge Management Systems Visual Inspection Results, Allen C. Estes, Dan M. Frangopol Nov 2003

Updating Bridge Reliability Based On Bridge Management Systems Visual Inspection Results, Allen C. Estes, Dan M. Frangopol

Architectural Engineering

Bridge management systems have become increasingly sophisticated over the past decade and provide valuable information about the structural condition of all bridges in the national database. At the same time, reliability methods have gained increasing prominence and are used to forecast life-cycle performance over many decades of structural life. Such reliability analyses need to be updated based on the results of inspections. Specifically targeted nondestructive evaluations are the preferred solution, but are not always available for every bridge. This paper examines how the visual inspection data provided from bridge management systems already in place can be used to update the ...

Futures Thinking For The Built And Human Environment, Lorcan Sirr, John Ratcliffe Nov 2003

Futures Thinking For The Built And Human Environment, Lorcan Sirr, John Ratcliffe

Reports

We are currently living through an era where we can, and need to, create exciting new possibilities in the way we think about, plan, design and build new places and spaces for working and living. At the same time, two irresistible forces – change and complexity – face decision-makers charged with framing and executing future policy and practice for the built and human environment. This paper generally argues the case for employing a ‘prospective’ process through scenario thinking for strategic planning and management in the urban arena. It does not attempt to identify or explore the advances made in planning for built ...

What Are You Thinking.... Allowing Publics To Engage The Surfaces Of The City, Matthew 'Mick' Mcnutt

Architecture Thesis Prep

"How can architecture build urban environments that allow for public participation in and control over the space of the city? Encouraging and encompassing the play element in culture, architecture can represent a society constructed with systems of exchange based upon information, communication, and imagination among varying publics in order to counterbalance the existing system of capital enterprise."

Customassation, Paul F. Maguda

Architecture Thesis Prep

"The architecture of mass customization must be sensitive and selective at this point in time.

It must be sensitive to the historical lineage of mass production in architecture.

It must be selective in an application appropriate of the principles of the new model.

It must be selective in a location that represents old model industry set against the diverse new model society.

This architecture is best understood as a process of transformation from old model to new."

Isomorphic Correspondence: Hybrid Different Media: Music And Architecture, Ki Ho Choi

Architecture Thesis Prep

School of Crafting Instruments: Hudson Yard in Manhattan, New York, NY

"In my thesis approach to the music and architecture, I am not evoking the classical Pythagoras and Palladio. I am more dealing with architecture and music as new ground of present architecture and new hybrid medium between them...

Architecture, just linked music with simple arithmetic ratios, should confront and try to parallel to contemporary music theory...

To hybrid these different media, I have chosen the instruments and Bella Bartok's musical Theory. Instrument has architectonic form with musical character while Bartok's musical theory has visual character. These two ...

Pragmatism And The Gradual Shift From Dependency To Neoliberalism: The World Bank, African Leaders And Development Policy In Afri, Francis Owusu Oct 2003

Pragmatism And The Gradual Shift From Dependency To Neoliberalism: The World Bank, African Leaders And Development Policy In Afri, Francis Owusu

Community and Regional Planning Publications

The long-standing disagreement between the international community and African leaders over an appropriate development strategy has been settled by the World Bank’s Comprehensive Development Framework (CDF) and African leaders’ New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD). Both documents support neoliberalism and see increased global integration as the key to Africa’s development. This paper traces Africa’s journey from the dependency/neoliberalism debate in the early 1980s to the current endorsement of neoliberalism. It is argued that the overwhelming global attention and support enjoyed by NEPAD derives from its embrace of western development ideas as well as changes in ...

The Architecture Of Control: Shaker Dwelling Houses And The Reform Movement In Early-Nineteenth-Century America, Julie Nicoletta Sep 2003

The Architecture Of Control: Shaker Dwelling Houses And The Reform Movement In Early-Nineteenth-Century America, Julie Nicoletta

SIAS Faculty Publications

By comparing the development of Shaker dwelling houses with the Quaker-led reform of prisons and insane asylums during the Second Great Awakening, this article places Shaker architecture into a larger context of reform in early-nineteenth-century America. In it, I demonstrate how and why the Shakers incorporated ideas from the outside world and applied them to their own buildings as a means to shape and control behavior. An examination of specific structures and contemporary discourses on reform architecture reveals similarities between Shaker buildings and those of mainstream society. In all its villages, the sect reproduced architectural forms largely developed by Shaker ...

Performance Review Of Indoor Noise Criteria, Lily M. Wang, Erica Eileen Bowden Sep 2003

Performance Review Of Indoor Noise Criteria, Lily M. Wang, Erica Eileen Bowden

Architectural Engineering -- Faculty Publications

Currently there are a number of indoor noise criteria used to quantify the level of background noise in rooms, including Noise Criteria (NC), Balanced Noise Criteria (NCB), Room Criteria (RC), Room Criteria Mark II (RC Mark II) and others. This paper reviews the pros and cons of each of these and then compares the values measured in existing classrooms in the Omaha area. The authors are in the process of subjectively comparing these various criteria to determine which method best correlates with human perception. The subjective testing methods and preliminary results are discussed.

Property Value Assessment And The Irish Eia Process, Siobhaun Cawley Aug 2003

Property Value Assessment And The Irish Eia Process, Siobhaun Cawley

Masters

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) provides for the assessment of the likely significant effects of a proposed development in the environment. Due to the ambiguous nature of the legislation on EIA, there are widely differing views as to whether the impact of a proposed development o surrounding property values should be considered as part of the EIA process. The primary objective of this thesis was to establish if property values should be considered within the Irish EIA process. In this regard, the most relevant provisions of the EC Directive 97/11/EC and the corresponding Irish legislation (Part X of the ...

Model State Land Use Legislation For New England, New England Environmental Finance Center, Muskie School Of Public Service Jul 2003

Model State Land Use Legislation For New England, New England Environmental Finance Center, Muskie School Of Public Service

Legislation

Sprawl is neither the ordained nor the inevitable outcome upon the New England landscape. A coordinated response to sprawl by the public and private sectors is possible, and could dramatically improve land use patterns and reduce the cost of local government. For the New England states, such a response would include, among other elements, legislation to eliminate existing gaps in the land use laws of each state – gaps that presently encourage or sanction sprawling development. It would also include incentives for municipalities to think beyond their borders and to act with greater efficiency and effect. It is the purpose of ...

Spatial Negotiations In A Commercial City: The Red Sea Port Of Mocha, Yemen During The First Half Of The Eighteenth Century, Nancy Um Jun 2003

Spatial Negotiations In A Commercial City: The Red Sea Port Of Mocha, Yemen During The First Half Of The Eighteenth Century, Nancy Um

Art History Faculty Scholarship

The city of Mocha in Yemen was one of the most important Red Sea ports of the early modern Arab world, handling the trade of spices, textiles, metals, local aromatics and coffee beans. This essay examines the urban structures that governed the needs and practices of merchants in the city during the first half of the eighteenth century. Drawing on contemporary Arabic chronicles, archival European trade documents, historical photographs, and field work in the city, it documents the conspicuous absence of a network of public trade structures, like the urban khan, the expected locus for trade in an Arab city ...

Measuring The Effectiveness Of Downtown Revitalization Strategies, John Mullin, Zenia Kotval

Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning Faculty Publication Series

Downtowns, the traditional business centers of our communities, have survived many changes throughout the last century. Once thriving retail and civic centers, they were adversely affected by changes in mobility, retail patterns and shopping habits. Since the 1960's downtowns have seen serious competition from suburban shopping centers, malls, strip commercial areas, major discount centers and on-line and catalogue sales. Despite these changes, downtowns still play a central role in our cities today. They are the centers of our urbanized areas and still reflect the economic core and image of our cities. A healthy downtown is often synonymous with a ...
