An Historical Description And Analysis Of Lincoln, Nebraska’S Development Pattern: 1860-1985 Concentric Growth – A Fading Dream, Leonard Pavelka Dec 1987

An Historical Description And Analysis Of Lincoln, Nebraska’S Development Pattern: 1860-1985 Concentric Growth – A Fading Dream, Leonard Pavelka

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

Three successive comprehensive plans for the city of Lincoln, Nebraska have advocated concentric growth as a goal. This thesis analyses Lincoln’s physical and economic development and finds that many elements that played a major role in the city’s growth strongly influenced residential expansion in two directions – east and south. Further investigation revealed that Lincoln’s comprehensive plans have weakened the central business district and strengthened the Gateway-East Park retail complex in east Lincoln. This thesis demonstrates that both historical tendency and the process of incremental policy making employed by the City Council make realization of the goal of concentric growth improbable.

Alarmed at the speed with which land is being used--and often abused--communities are being faced with touch decisions on how to cope with development, either by directing it, managing it or even stopping it."

The thesis is an attempt to create an architecture capable of providing an identifiable urban marker: The intention of the marker placed in a specific composition will be to designate the area as a unique urban sector of the larger city. It is primarily for this reason the architecture created must be conscious of the sector's cultural and functional needs; Providing a cultural progress center. The site's relationship to the larger city acts as a gateway or threshold to …

Harlem On My Mind, Shawn L. Rickenbacker

Architecture Senior Theses

The thesis involves directly establishing a coherent dialogue between participants and architecture. The site and architecture involved are only a catalyst to the area it is representing, Harlem. However, the project will have the responsibilities of designating itself as a primary theshold to the famous ditricts and attracting would be participants. It is for this reason the program of cultural progress centre has been chosen in the interest of providing a stimulation program. The intention of the proposed centre is not to compete with the district or communty in which it lies, but to act as its subordinate. This will …

Finally, we present recommendations concerning local action and possible …

Form And Meaning, John K. Jespersen Jan 1987

Form And Meaning, John K. Jespersen

Faculty Publications

As did Owen Jones, Bloomer argues for a modern style of ornament to decorate a modern architechture. Based on formal laws rather than theories of classical or naturalism imitation, conventionalization can be seen as being explicitly modern. More-over, deriving from the work of ornament, these laws are dependent on intrinsic rather than extrinsic principles.
