Architectural education offers students practice with complex problem-solving, most often separate from the public they will eventually serve. Design education that addresses real clients and real world concerns such as renewable energy and resources, social equity and environmental justice, and economic feasibility demands the skills of coordination, communication, vision, and leadership different from conventional architectural education. This paper outlines an innovative university curriculum that moves in the direction of educating architects as community leaders based on sustainable design and the concept of community in every aspect of the teaching model. This course explores the history, aesthetics and development of Asian American and African American places, and views them from the perspective of their subcultural environmental patterns. It focuses on how patterns of living among these groups are developed and represented in the environment. The course explores the intersection of environmental design and cultural studies which suggests that ethical, social and cultural considerations are as important as material and technique in the creation of environments. The goal is to develop an appreciation of the role of ethnic diversity in shaping and giving meaning to the built environment.
