What Impact Is Occupancy Behavior Having On The Energy Performance Gap Of A Cohort Of A Rated Dwellings?, Karl Mcgarry
What Impact Is Occupancy Behavior Having On The Energy Performance Gap Of A Cohort Of A Rated Dwellings?, Karl Mcgarry

The use of energy asset ratings in the construction industry has been criticized in literature and in practice due to its apparent inaccuracies when compared to measured energy usage. In the Irish context the Dwelling Energy Assessment Procedure (DEAP), the asset rating tool has been the topic of many research papers of late with authors citing that in almost all cases the model is underestimating the energy usage of A rated dwellings. This point is of major concern due to A rated Building Energy Rating (BER) certificates now being minimum compliance with the building regulations for new build dwellings. The …
Against The Grain: Why Is Timber Underutilised In The Irish Construction Industry Given Its Environmental Properties?, Francis Noel Duffy
Against The Grain: Why Is Timber Underutilised In The Irish Construction Industry Given Its Environmental Properties?, Francis Noel Duffy
Other resources
This study explores why timber is underutilised in the Irish construction industry, given its environmental properties. Defined literature discourse (framed by two timber exemplar case study buildings and themed into procurement, policy and academic sections) is analysed in pursuit of factors that meet the research question. The literature data collected is used to formulate action-based research in the form of a “Wood First” motion, subsequently passed into policy by South Dublin County Council in July 2017. The literature is also refined into questions for a two-stage, fourth-generation evaluation interview process. This process further examines the discourse of industry experts and …

I write a blog www.jj21k.com which looks at the works of James Joyce, the environment which he wrote about and changes that have taken place since he wrote about them. The blogposts are predominantly about Dublin. As part of discovering Dublin by reading and Running I have written several longer pieces.
This piece creates a running narrative that runs through each of the Dubliners stories, physically connecting them and making observation on them and the city of Dublin.
You can see more background information and other posts on www.jj21k.com.
Standupable Desks - Ergonomic Furniture For Primary Schools, John Walsh, Mark Ennis
Standupable Desks - Ergonomic Furniture For Primary Schools, John Walsh, Mark Ennis

Numerous studies have shown how prolonged sitting at school can have a negative effect on the physical health and is linked with obesity in primary school students. More physically active approaches to learning have been shown to not only improve physical wellbeing but increase attention and improve learning outcomes. There is also an increasing movement to sit/ stand desking for office worker for ergonomic reasons.
This project is concerned with developing a sit/ stand school desk that would allow students to move between sitting and standing while in school. The desk should be suitable for primary school children aged between …

In a study of 55 electrical engineering students, Yadav, et al., found learning gains among students in Project-Based Learning (PBL) to be twice the gains of those taking traditional lecture courses. Du and Kolmos indicate groupbased PBL is more supportive and appealing to women than traditional lecture formats. Savin-Baden posits that female and minority students are more likely to ask questions in non-competitive PBL environments. This study interrogates the claim that PBL is particularly supportive to female and minority students. This work-in-progress uses a phenomenological research methodology to investigate how collaborative learning (in formal as well as non-formal settings) influences …
“Can The Use Of Online Learning And Reflective Journals Improve Students’ Performance And Engage Them In Independent Learning For A Practically Taught “Timber Jointing Module”?, Jennifer Byrne

The Technological University Dubiln is one of the largest multi-level higher education providers in Ireland. The Institute’s traditional mission has always been focused on teaching and learning in the field of advanced technical vocational education and training (TVET), and one of its agendas is to foster and encourage changes in teaching practice and methodology in order to enhance the student learning experience.
This research concerned the performance levels of first year students of the Timber Product Technology (TPT) programme. I wanted to investigate whether the use of independent online learning and reflective journals would encourage these students to continue their …

The Very Basics Of Sustainability - An Alternative Viewpoint (Slides With Audio) (Large File! To Speed Up Download, Right-Click On "Download" Link To Save To Own Pc.), Jim Mcgovern
Other resources
This presentation sets out the very basics of ‘sustainability’, although a definition of sustainability is not attempted. Some of the very basics are the context in which the Earth and humankind exist in space and time, the Earth’s climate, the Earth’s population and humankind’s options and choices. The author advocates keeping an open mind on all available options, including the use of oil, gas, coal, tar sands, carbon capture and sequestration, nuclear power etc., as well as the technologies that are more widely considered ‘green’. The author also argues that, in addressing the challenges that humankind faces, globally concerted effort …

Towards The Poetic, Noel Brady
Towards The Poetic, Noel Brady

The thesis purports to build a theory for the analysis and synthesis of architecture. It identifies a poetic strutcure which contextualises the production of arhcitecture while aspiring towards universal themes of dwelling and belonging. Using a number of case studies it uses deep reading of the artefacts to confirm the theoretical concepts.
