Enhancing Station Level Direct-Demand Models With Multi-Scalar Accessibility Indicators, Luis Enrique Ramos-Santiago May 2023

Enhancing Station Level Direct-Demand Models With Multi-Scalar Accessibility Indicators, Luis Enrique Ramos-Santiago

Open Access Publishing Fund

Direct-demand models (DDM) are increasingly being used for a diversity of transit research and practice purposes. Yet few station-level DDM studies have explored the use of composite indicators of metropolitan accessibility in predicting demand. After all, provision of access to metropolitan destinations is one of the main goals of rapid-transit systems. Furthermore, to this author’s knowledge no study has explored potential interactions with local-level accessibility indicators that are typically included in station level transit DDMs. This study explores these possibilities and uses Los Angeles multimodal rapid-transit network as a representative case study of a system that operates in a dispersed …

Which Activities Do Those With Long Commutes Forego, And Should We Care?, Eric A. Morris, Dick Ettema, Ying Zhou May 2020

Which Activities Do Those With Long Commutes Forego, And Should We Care?, Eric A. Morris, Dick Ettema, Ying Zhou

Publications

Commuting imposes opportunity costs on travelers since those with long commutes have less time to participate in other activities. This paper examines how commute duration is associated with activity patterns. It utilizes a two-day time use survey administered in the United Kingdom in 2014 and 2015. Focusing on full-time employees and controlling for socio-demographic characteristics, we regress time spent engaging in 22 different activities on commute duration using OLS and Cragg two-part hurdle modeling. We separately test the effects of commute duration on activity participation for men versus women and for single persons versus persons in couples. We also report …

Minor Flow Disruptions, Traffic-Related Factors And Their Effect On Major Flow Disruptions In The Operating Room, Anjali Joseph, Amin Khoshkenar, Kevin Taaffe, Ken Catchpole, Herminia Machry, Sara Bayramzadeh Aug 2018

Minor Flow Disruptions, Traffic-Related Factors And Their Effect On Major Flow Disruptions In The Operating Room, Anjali Joseph, Amin Khoshkenar, Kevin Taaffe, Ken Catchpole, Herminia Machry, Sara Bayramzadeh

Publications

Background Studies in operating rooms (OR) show that minor disruptions tend to group together to result in serious adverse events such as surgical errors. Understanding the characteristics of these minor flow disruptions (FD) that impact major events is important in order to proactively design safer systems.

Objective The purpose of this study is to use a systems approach to investigate the aetiology of minor and major FDs in ORs in terms of the people involved, tasks performed and OR traffic, as well as the location of FDs and other environmental characteristics of the OR that may contribute to these disruptions. …

El Croquis: An Adaptive Response To Achieve Best Access, Kathy Edwards Mar 2017

El Croquis: An Adaptive Response To Achieve Best Access, Kathy Edwards

Presentations

El Croquis, GA Houses, AV Monografías: monographic serials or serial monographs? These titles represent some of the highest-quality sources for the plans, sections, elevations, and site plans students rely on in their study of architectural precedents, so we want students to be able to exploit them thoroughly. How our library catalogs display these resources–as periodicals with a basic serial record, or as monographs with individual titles, subject headings, and content notes –significantly affects how discoverable and, ultimately, how useful their best features are. This presentation examines how we at Clemson’s Gunnin Architecture Library went about rethinking and reconfiguring our treatment …

Friedrichstrasse Skyscraper: Transfiguration Through Glass, Or Vertical And Horizontal Transparencies: Mies Van Der Rohe, Ufuk Ersoy

Publications

Mies van der Rohe’s entry for the Friedrichstrasse Skyscraper Competition of 1921, a project he named the “Wabe” (Honeycomb) construction, not only epitomized the polemics then current about the renovation of Berlin as a modern metropolis, but also represented a radical shift in the architect’s own viewpoint – his views of modern life, modern construction, and modern materials, particularly glass.

God’S Dominion: Omar Ibn Said Use Of Arabic Literacy As Opposition To Slavery, Akel Kahera Jan 2014

God’S Dominion: Omar Ibn Said Use Of Arabic Literacy As Opposition To Slavery, Akel Kahera

Publications

Omar ibn Said’s Th e Life of Omar Ibn Said, Written by Himself (1831) occupies a unique position within the slave narrative tradition. As the only surviving Arabic autobiography written by a slave from the United States, the Life juxtaposes a religious exegesis based on the textual authority of the Qur’an with a first-person account of Omar’s life. Only recently rediscovered, having been found in a trunk in a Virginia at-tic in 1995 and sold to a private collector after being lost since 1920, the manuscript has sparked renewed interest in writings by enslaved Muslims in America, and in particular …

Planning Bicycle Infrastructure Based On Quickest Route Method, Olena Tokmylenko Apr 2013

Planning Bicycle Infrastructure Based On Quickest Route Method, Olena Tokmylenko

Graduate Research and Discovery Symposium (GRADS)

Current bicycle models assume average speed along the route and among routes and travel time is proportional to distance. There is no method that determines realistic cycling time based on change in speed due to topography. Our research proposes a model for the development of bicycle infrastructure based on reducing travel time and level of difficulty. We identified that topography, human power, and riding speed have strong relationship and we developed bicycle travel time model where speed is a function of human power and topography. We solved the shortest route problem with time impedance where time was computed based on …

A Downtown Revitalization Study For Woodruff, South Carolina, Alyson Leslie, Annemarie Jacques Apr 2013

A Downtown Revitalization Study For Woodruff, South Carolina, Alyson Leslie, Annemarie Jacques

Graduate Research and Discovery Symposium (GRADS)

Woodruff is a small town in South Carolina that has declined since the closing of two major textile mills in the 1980s that once were its economic drivers. Economic decline has led to the physical deterioration of the buildings and streetscape elements on Woodruff’s Main Street. The conditions of a town’s Main Street reflect the identity of the town as a whole, particularly in a town the size of Woodruff with a total land area of 3.9 square miles. A component specific to Woodruff that emphasizes the necessity for a high quality downtown is the high volume of daily traffic …

Cultivating America's Working Lands: A Study Of The Sociocultural Value Of Family Farms, Katherine Lloyd Apr 2013

Cultivating America's Working Lands: A Study Of The Sociocultural Value Of Family Farms, Katherine Lloyd

Graduate Research and Discovery Symposium (GRADS)

Our ability to produce food in a sustainable, healthy and humane manner is threatened, both in the United States and on the global scale. This difficulty is exacerbated by expected population growth, creating a need for 60% more food worldwide by 2050 to feed a population of 9.3 billion. How we produce food affects local economies, the cultural vitality of communities, and the health of regional ecosystems. Industrial or conventional agriculture is damaging all three of these systems by draining local economies through corporate business practices, isolating farmers and attributing to rural population losses, while depleting natural resources and polluting …

Quarters A At The Old Charleston Navy Yard: A Historic Interior Furnishing And Interpretive Plan, Wendy Madill, Charlotte Causey, Amy Elizabeth Uebel, Mary Margaret Schley, Julia Tew

Graduate Research and Discovery Symposium (GRADS)

Charleston's Naval Yard resembles a ghost town today, but it was once the city’s most active industrial district. It employed thousands of South Carolina workers who built warships and Navy infrastructure throughout the 1900s. When the Admiral presided over this bustling base, he lived at Quarters A. This social epicenter hosted military ceremonies, weddings, and PR visits from celebrities. Charles Lindbergh, Helen Keller, and FDR are some of the notables who walked these halls—halls that are now silent. Since the 1996 decommissioning of the base, Quarters A faces deterioration. Although exterior condition is poor, the interior is well-preserved. The purpose …

To See Daydreams: The Glass Utopia Of Paul Scheerbart And Bruno Taut, Ufuk Ersoy Jan 2011

To See Daydreams: The Glass Utopia Of Paul Scheerbart And Bruno Taut, Ufuk Ersoy

Publications

In 1914, the passionate young architect Bruno Taut (1880-1938) and the bohemian poet Paul Scheerbart (1863-1915) drew a parallel between the two imaginative disciplines of building and narrative and committed themselves to a shared vision of Utopia. Both sought to represent an archetype of “glass architecture”; one by narrating, the other by building. Highly critical of existing architecture and social conditions, they were in search of an inspiring alternative, as were many of their more progressive contemporaries. Yet, what made Taut and Scheerbart’s shared approach more sophisticated than that of their contemporaries also left it open to criticism. In particular, …

Volumes That Speak: The Architectural Books Of The Drayton Library Catalog And The Design Of Drayton Hall, Patricia Ann Lowe

Master of Science in Historic Preservation Terminal Projects

Drayton Hall, an early eighteenth-century plantation house on the Ashley River in Charleston, South Carolina, is widely considered to be the first Palladian house in the United States. Now owned and operated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Drayton Hall is something of a laboratory for the study of archaeology, landscape architecture, material culture, social history, and historic preservation. Though new discoveries are made almost every day at Drayton Hall, the origins of the house’s design remain unknown.

In 2009, the Drayton Library Catalog was discovered within the Drayton manuscript collection containing references to seven popular eighteenth-century architectural books. …

Gothic Revival Outbuildings Of Antebellum Charleston, South Carolina, Erin Marie Mcnicholl May 2010

Gothic Revival Outbuildings Of Antebellum Charleston, South Carolina, Erin Marie Mcnicholl

Master of Science in Historic Preservation Terminal Projects

The Gothic Revival was a movement of picturesque architecture that is found all over the United States on buildings built in the first half of the nineteenth century. In Antebellum Charleston people tended to cling to the classical styles of architecture even when the rest of the nation and Europe were enthusiastically embracing the different picturesque styles, such as Gothic Revival and Italianate. In the United States the Gothic Revival style can be found adorning buildings of every use. One of the unique applications to be found is on kitchen buildings and carriage houses. These applications exhibit traits of an …

Master of Science in Historic Preservation Terminal Projects

Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina is a coastal barrier island located to the northeast of Charleston Harbor. Utilized as a health retreat and vacation destination from the early 1810s to the 1930s by the wealthy of Charleston, the island now exists as a full-time residential community. The island’s residential structures consisted mainly of simple one to two story wood structures, many with substantial and distinctive porch designs. While there have been surveys completed of the location and histories of structures on the island, until now, there has not been a study of the particular architectural typologies or their prevalence on the …

Stained Glass In The Holy City A Catalogue Of Ecclesiastical Stained Glass In Charleston, South Carolina, Eileen Grogan

Master of Science in Historic Preservation Terminal Projects

Charleston, South Carolina, is internationally known for its characteristic architecture and commitment to historic preservation. A wide variety of religious denominations have been represented here since the city was founded in 1670, and ecclesiastical buildings play an important role in the city’s cultural and architectural history. Sailors returning to this early trading port dubbed it “The Holy City” for its church spires, so numerous they were visible even from out at sea. Many houses of worship on the peninsula are home to stained glass windows which date from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. These windows are historically significant …

A Survey Of The Ecclesiastical Building Of The J.A. Dempwolf Architecture Firm, York, Pennsylvania, Rebecca Morrish Cybularz

Master of Science in Historic Preservation Terminal Projects

This thesis examines the ecclesiastical buildings of the J.A. Dempwolf architecture firm of York, Pennsylvania. The prolific firm brought architecture to small cities and rural areas of central Pennsylvania and northern Maryland during the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries.

During their tenure, the firm designed over six hundred buildings which included houses, churches, public buildings, hospitals, schools, and businesses; of these eighty-nine were ecclesiastical buildings. Included within this thesis are the survey of forty-five of the designed churches in chronological order by date of design and a list of the remaining forty-four. Also included are a history of the firm and …

Public Housing On Peninsular Charleston, South Carolina: A History Of Subsidized Housing, Jason Christopher Grismore

Master of Science in Historic Preservation Terminal Projects

The purpose of this thesis is to document, analyze and provide a social and cultural history for twelve public housing communities to better understand the evolution of housing low income residents on the Charleston peninsula below the northern boundary of Mount Pleasant Street. There are five distinct categories of assisted housing, however this thesis primarily focuses on public housing, considered ‘projects.’ Mount Pleasant Street was chosen because it serves as a boundary between the Charleston peninsula and the industrial district of the Upper Peninsula. The survey of each property includes; date of construction, architects, contractors, structure type, building materials, time …

Preserving Preeminence Amidst Revitilization: The Role Of The Tharp House In The Restoration Of Falmouth, Jamaica, Matthew Pelz

Master of Science in Historic Preservation Terminal Projects

In November of 2008, after years of negotiation, the Port Authority of Jamaica reached an agreement with Royal Caribbean to authorize the construction of a pier in the harbor of Falmouth, Jamaica. Respected for its collection of colonial architecture, Falmouth became slated as a “heritage destination” offering an alternative to the well-known Caribbean cruise experiences. However, the project is not a mere pilot program. The $224 million cost represented an incredible investment by the Jamaican government and Royal Caribbean has promised 400,000 visitors annually, a figure that would rank the town among the most frequented Caribbean cruise destinations.

After early …

From The Highlands To A Low Country: Assimilation Of Scottish Highland Settlers To Local Vernacular Building Traditions In North And South Carolina, Bridget Jean O'Brien May 2009

From The Highlands To A Low Country: Assimilation Of Scottish Highland Settlers To Local Vernacular Building Traditions In North And South Carolina, Bridget Jean O'Brien

Master of Science in Historic Preservation Terminal Projects

In recent years several early Scottish dwellings in North and South Carolina have been lost by fire, neglect, or dismantlement. Several buildings of this nature were saved by local preservation groups and private citizens and have since been stabilized and restored. Eight early farm dwellings of Scottish settlers in North and South Carolina were chosen to be studied and analyzed to determine if Scottish vernacular building types were brought to the American colonies in the late 18th and early 19th century.

Before looking at Scottish dwellings in North and South Carolina a study of traditional Highland architecture is necessary to …

Becoming Jane Jacobs First Draft 2009, Peter L. Laurence Jan 2009

Becoming Jane Jacobs First Draft 2009, Peter L. Laurence

Publications

Jane Jacobs (1916-2006), author of The Death and Life of Great American Cities (1961), did not like the term “urban design” and did not describe herself as an architectural critic, but contributed significantly to the development of American architectural criticism and the new field of urban design. Although relatively little is known about Jacobs’ intellectual development, her influences, and her early writing career, before Death and Life was published, Jacobs was already among the most influential critics of urban renewal in the country. The book was a culmination of many years of studying and writing about the city; of working …
