Coarse-Work: An Investigation Into The Impact Of Materiality In The Interior Educational Setting, Isabel G. Robb May 2024

Coarse-Work: An Investigation Into The Impact Of Materiality In The Interior Educational Setting, Isabel G. Robb

Honors Theses

Education design in modern suburban America curates learning environments that are cold and impersonal, being used more as a place to keep youth during the day than as a place where they can truly learn about and understand the world around them. This learning environment does not suit all students, especially those with learning disabilities, and it leaves little room for flexibility in classroom usage.

Focusing on creating a learning environment where all students feel welcome and are able to effectively learn, this projective design research project aims to provide a comprehensive intervention through the built environment and interior design, …

Lighting In The Computer Rendering, Mi Tsung Chang

Publications and Research

We often take lighting for granted, but lighting plays a vital role in our physical world. In the world of 3D, we have to set up lights to simulate our world. It is a daunting task but makes computer rendering interesting and challenging. This section covers the basic lighting concepts and principles and takes a close look at how lights play an important role in defining space in computer rendering. Different rendering methods will also be discussed in this article.

Using Bim To Increase The Efficiency Of Energy-Driven Retrofitting Projects, Anne Grego, Shannon Chance, Barry Mcauley May 2023

Using Bim To Increase The Efficiency Of Energy-Driven Retrofitting Projects, Anne Grego, Shannon Chance, Barry Mcauley

Conference Papers

The building sector is responsible for nearly 40% of global energy consumption. Many existing buildings have poor thermal insulation and low energy performance, hindering sustainability goals. Energy-driven building retrofitting could address this issue and implementing Building Information Modelling (BIM) in retrofitting can reduce process time, costs, and waste associated with such undertakings. Yet, there is a lack of research and insufficient guidance for implementing BIM in energy-driven retrofitting. A BIM framework is presented to enhance decision-making processes during retrofitting. The aims of this study were to (1) identify BIM technologies and methodologies that could address existing barriers and improve efficiency …

Designing The American Dreamscape: Suburbs Of Worship And The American Dream, Rebecca Virgl May 2023

Designing The American Dreamscape: Suburbs Of Worship And The American Dream, Rebecca Virgl

Masters in Architecture Program: Theses

This thesis explores suburbia as the physical manifestation of the American Dream as a pseudo-religious system. This religious system and contemporary suburban ideology are explained and disseminated through a historical review and analysis of suburban media. Pop culture serves as a signpost that directs public opinion and cultural value; much of media today wrestles with the ideas of the American Dream, fore fronting these cultural values in our collective identity. Once the baseline of socio-economic religious ideology has been established in the American Dream, the extremes of these beliefs were explored in three suburban environments: home, labor, and retail. Each …

Impact Of The Pandemic On Computer Science Education, Dwight Miller, Guy Trainin Apr 2023

Impact Of The Pandemic On Computer Science Education, Dwight Miller, Guy Trainin

Research and Evaluation in Education, Technology, Art, and Design

This poster examines the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on computer science education in Nebraska. Data collected by Code.org on student and teacher engagement in CS education in Nebraska public and private schools helps paint a picture of the changing landscape. We reveal a significant decrease in rural student participation since the 2019-20 school year, a minimal increase in the number of teachers teaching with Code.org, and a significant drop in participation of girls at the secondary level. By uncovering these trends in engagement, we hope to inform and inspire educators and administrators to take action.

Adaptive Reuse Of Frosty Morn, Veronika Kalugina, Rebecca Tonguis, Heidi Gabriel, Peyton Kauffman

Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)

Frosty Morn, a former meat packing facility in Clarksville, TN, is now abandoned, dilapidated, and partially demolished. The site sits within the Red River District neighborhood, which consists of a diverse community of artists. The Red River District has been identified by the Clarksville Mayor’s Office as an area with potential for growth, catalyzed by repurposing the Frosty Morn building as an icon and beacon of the community. Highest and best use research, in addition to community voices, indicated programmatic needs of a farmer’s market, makerspaces, small business incubators, park space, and live/work units. Our presentation will describe how this …

Pangaea: Designing A Human Community On Mars, Jennifer Ray, Giulia Ware, Alyssa Tabor

Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)

The last half-century has produced scientific knowledge and technological advancements propelling humankind into the Golden Age of space exploration and travel. With the global gaze upon space, many are looking beyond the moon to the colonization of Mars. Once considered science fiction, hypothetical questions of human habitability in extra-terrestrial environments are becoming more of a scientific reality – and necessity - for the future of humanity.

Humans have successfully lived aboard Skylab and the International Space Station for long-duration space missions since the mid-Twentieth Century. The interior living and working quarters of these environments have long been engineered to create …

Remembered Spaces: Reframing Architecture From Body To Building, Shaan Lyngdoh Lakshmanan May 2022

Remembered Spaces: Reframing Architecture From Body To Building, Shaan Lyngdoh Lakshmanan

Architecture Senior Theses

Our bodies act as instruments to record sensations received from the world that surrounds us. The internal world we create is how we perceive, remember, and preserve the external world. The process is essential to the continual formation of ourselves.

This thesis aims to reframe the values we place on architectural representation, from the objective, novel, cartesian parameters of architecture to qualities of emotion and place. The device for this reframing is the remembered space, which is an architecture that exists in our memories. It is within the remembered space that we begin to understand how a space was inhabited.

Restoring Lost Heritage, Lewis Culliver May 2022

Restoring Lost Heritage, Lewis Culliver

Masters in Architecture Program: Theses

One of the best streets to explore in Omaha is N. 24th Street. Many buildings showcase larger than life, vibrant murals that express the creative nature and spirit of this part of historic North Omaha. The murals represent a healing element for the community; many murals cover structures that are in various states of disrepair. Community gardens have risen to fill voids left by traumatic development practices, such as the implementation of the north freeway.

Despite having lost a large part of its heritage, including hundreds of homes and businesses that were destroyed to make way for the north freeway, …

The design concept for Loop Advertising is centered around the progress flag. This flag is a reinterpretation of the 6 colour pride flag to include people of colour. Our design goal was to celebrate marginalized communities who are typically underrepresented in the media. Each colour of the flag along with its meaning is incorporated it …

Broken Chair Chaconne, Anthony Elia Mar 2022

Broken Chair Chaconne, Anthony Elia

Bridwell Library Research

In March 2022, I was working at my computer when this increasingly rickety chair collapsed beneath me! It was time to get back to responsible eating and get a new chair. But amid the intensive planning and production of The Festival of Form: John Cage and the Infinite Human events, it occurred to me that I could play around with the ideas of music, sound, noise, and silence, and particularly the unconventional experiments of notation and scoring. Shortly after this chair broke, I took a sharpie pen to it and began to notate it like a score, along with some …

Paisley Mill

Renew is the un-official 4th R in reduce, reuse, recycle; and is the driving concept of the Paisley Eatery. The focal point for giving life to the space is a sustainable green wall that improves the quality of air while bringing a pleasing aesthetic to the space. To help renew the space I am strengthening the building by using sustainably sourced heavy timber for columns, wall studs, and rafters; durable, and sustainable wood siding is used to keep the historical charm while lowering the up keep of the facade.

Paisley Mill

The Regal Archive project aims to construct a building that is sustainable, functionable and at the same time, has its own personality. The inspiration has been drawn directly from the image of leaves, or tree branches, stacking on top of each other. There will be a lot of open spaces, floor openings, lots of windows that make use of natural sunlight. Being able to see floor stacked on floor, all the way from top to bottom provides a great sense of verticality to the guests, and add more depth to the building’s context, as if one is to stand on …

The old silo building is a heavy timber construction. The 3D wall section shows the design of the wall I have chosen to be used in the office, art gallery and pottery studio. The exterior wall material selected is wood planks as wanted to maintain the heritage look and pay respect to the old look of the building. Another reason to choose wood is that it is durable, sustainable, and efficient. Exterior sheathing is used instead of plywood to make the non-combustible building construction. Semi-rigid (mineral fibre wool) insulation is used above grade and is tripled. The roof material is …

Welcome to Paisley Mill! A newly renovated stone mill which features a coffee shop with a bakery, a lounge space, and a hobby shop. I’ve decided to display my section at this location because it shows how the proposed bakery connects to the existing silo structure. The bakery proposal is the main highlight of my design. I specifically wanted to show the viewing window from the coffee shop into the bakery because this is the main feature that connects the two programs together. I am emphasizing the idea of connection with how the baked goods are made and being freshly …
