Mela: Vessels Of Ephemeral Architecture, Neha Tummalapalli
Mela: Vessels Of Ephemeral Architecture, Neha Tummalapalli
Architecture Senior Theses
In states of temporality, conventions can be challenged and reimagined. Ephemeral architecture responds to fluctuating conditions and are often built with lightweight, recycled materials that allow for reconfiguration and reinvention. Melas, Sanskrit for "gathering," become a lens through which ad hoc urbanism can be further explored in its most idealized form. Melas include gatherings of all scales that are commercial, celebratory, or religious. The large crowds and temporary nature of these events allow for thoughtful ephemeral configurations to be tried and tested.
The largest gathering of humans in the world is the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, India. This religious pilgrimages …
Threshold Tectonics: Reclaiming Space Through Geomorphological Design, Amreeta Verma
Threshold Tectonics: Reclaiming Space Through Geomorphological Design, Amreeta Verma
Architecture Senior Theses
This research posits that a revitalization of indigenous earth architecture practices in a contemporary context can mitigate the immense waste and embodied carbon in the construction industry while engaging practices of land return and reclamation. Locally sourced earth materials are the focus of this research because when utilized in a circular consumption cycle, they can be reused or returned to the natural environment. Designing with a temporal understanding of material decay, changing site conditions, and project life cycle reduces the impact of construction waste on the burgeoning issue of environmental degradation and resource depletion. Material experimentation is used to develop …
Linear Waltz With Nature: A Self-Supporting Infrastructure In Nature, Shangkun Zhong
Linear Waltz With Nature: A Self-Supporting Infrastructure In Nature, Shangkun Zhong
Architecture Senior Theses
This project aims to create a sustainable system that addresses waste management issues in urban areas by examining the functionality of recycling infrastructures and how they can be integrated. The system will absorb waste and convert it into renewable energy to support a field station in Tibet, where self-sustainability is critical, due to the remote location. Architects often demonstrate their understanding of sustainability through various means such as integration, passive/energy-saving, and natural architecture. This thesis argues that a sustainable system such as CopenHill, can exemplify the combination of green-manifested design and recycle content as a sustainable cycle that supports human-nature …
Assemblage Dwelling: A Radical Migrant Domesticity In Urbanity, Protik Choudhuri
Assemblage Dwelling: A Radical Migrant Domesticity In Urbanity, Protik Choudhuri
Architecture Senior Theses
Humanity will end the 21st century as an entirely urban species. But urban environments are factories- the site of perpetual reproduction of services, interactions, urban and domestic spaces for capital accumulation, rather than the outcome of social processes. As such, the conditions under which migrants have integrated into the urban environments globally are characterized by the extraordinary struggle for decent housing and work.
Globally, it is the squatting movement that responded by countering exclusionary forms of ownership and radically transforming urban and domestic conditions for migrants through two distinct operations: the illegal appropriation of vacant buildings and domestic interventions centered …

The Río Hondo Valley in Taos County of New Mexico is known for its picturesque setting and the stunning valley floor stretching from Valdez on the eastern edge downstream to Arroyo Hondo just before the Río Grande gorge on its western boundary. Above the valley is a plain known as Des Montes. Each of these communities was settled in the nineteenth century coincident with the building of acequias to sustain village agriculture, the only economy of the time. One of the irrigation systems, La Acequia de la Cuchilla, often is said to be “the ditch that runs uphill.” From …
Designing The American Dreamscape: Suburbs Of Worship And The American Dream, Rebecca Virgl
Designing The American Dreamscape: Suburbs Of Worship And The American Dream, Rebecca Virgl
Masters in Architecture Program: Theses
This thesis explores suburbia as the physical manifestation of the American Dream as a pseudo-religious system. This religious system and contemporary suburban ideology are explained and disseminated through a historical review and analysis of suburban media. Pop culture serves as a signpost that directs public opinion and cultural value; much of media today wrestles with the ideas of the American Dream, fore fronting these cultural values in our collective identity. Once the baseline of socio-economic religious ideology has been established in the American Dream, the extremes of these beliefs were explored in three suburban environments: home, labor, and retail. Each …
Sustainability Of Form-Based Zoning Codes In An Existing Suburb, Elvira Batelaan
Sustainability Of Form-Based Zoning Codes In An Existing Suburb, Elvira Batelaan
Community and Regional Planning Program: Professional Projects
Most planners and architects agree that the current rate of growth and sprawl in American cities is not sustainable. This thesis will explore how form-based zoning codes can be used to implement policies that increase the sustainability of an existing suburb. Typically, form-based zoning codes are applied to either new subdivisions in a city or to an overlay district in a city which does not get to the heart of the issue. A solution is needed for the rest of the city, such as downtown, industrial areas and existing suburbs, to further increase the sustainability of the entire city. In …

Transmountain Diversion In The Forest Wilderness: Natural History Is Human History, José A. Rivera Ph.D
Transmountain Diversion In The Forest Wilderness: Natural History Is Human History, José A. Rivera Ph.D
Faculty Publications
The case study details how an adjudication involving the water rights of Indigenous pueblos downstream of rights held by Hispano irrigators led to a prolonged conflict not with the pueblos but between Cuba valley farmers and the United States Forest Service. It happened that an adjudication decree in federal court mandated the Nacimiento Community Ditch Association to replace its diversion located in a wilderness forest with a modern structure to partition water equitably among all users on the Jémez River. The transmountain diversion, as it was called, took water out of the Jémez basin and dropped it to a canyon …

In the summer of 1999, I traveled to eastern Spain to observe the irrigated landscapes of the region known as huertas. I had recently completed a book about the community acequias of the upper Río Grande and set out to compare them with counterpart systems of Valencia, Murcia, and Lorca. In Valencia the highlights included a session of the fabled Water Court, the Tribunal de las Aguas de Valencia, and a tour of huertas within the urbanized portion of city. In Murcia I visited the office of the Junta de Hacendados and from there made it a point to …

Adaptive Reuse Of Frosty Morn, Veronika Kalugina, Rebecca Tonguis, Heidi Gabriel, Peyton Kauffman
Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
Frosty Morn, a former meat packing facility in Clarksville, TN, is now abandoned, dilapidated, and partially demolished. The site sits within the Red River District neighborhood, which consists of a diverse community of artists. The Red River District has been identified by the Clarksville Mayor’s Office as an area with potential for growth, catalyzed by repurposing the Frosty Morn building as an icon and beacon of the community. Highest and best use research, in addition to community voices, indicated programmatic needs of a farmer’s market, makerspaces, small business incubators, park space, and live/work units. Our presentation will describe how this …

Cumulative Impact Of Repeated Wildfire Displacement Events On Migration In The Western United States, Bo Carpen
Cumulative Impact Of Repeated Wildfire Displacement Events On Migration In The Western United States, Bo Carpen
Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning Masters Projects
Climate migration has been identified as an urgent issue that will likely add greater complexity to existing climate change planning efforts (Black, 2011; Ahsan, 2011). Existing climate migration literature has primarily focused on international migration and the Global South, offering limited applicability to internal conditions in developed countries due to the issue’s high context dependency (Hoffman, 2020). Local and municipal planners have a responsibility to pursue evidence-based climate adaptation strategies (Mitchell, 2020). Yet, planners lack reliable data to forecast potential changes to regional migration based on repeated exposure to climate stressors. To date, research has been primarily qualitative in nature, …
Mill Redevelopment Toolkit, Janko Tomasic
Mill Redevelopment Toolkit, Janko Tomasic
Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning Masters Projects
Not long ago, mills were the centerpieces and economic engine of many communities throughout New England. With the departure of the manufacturing industry, many of these structures and complexes fell into vacancy and blight, with many being demolished outright. The town of Ludlow, MA is an example of a smaller mill community that was impacted by the closure of its mill. It resulted in the decline and eventual stagnation of population and economic growth. Large unused buildings may bring sorrow to the residents who once worked the floors and machines, but they can also offer opportunity. Through the effective adaptive …

High Capacity Transit Through The Merrimack Valley Corridor: Feasibility And Alternatives For Improved Transit For The Region, Henry Mulvey
High Capacity Transit Through The Merrimack Valley Corridor: Feasibility And Alternatives For Improved Transit For The Region, Henry Mulvey
Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning Masters Projects
Presently, the interurban bus routes of the Merrimack Valley Regional Transit Authority (MeVa) connecting Lawrence, Lowell, and Haverhill have the highest ridership of any of the routes on the MeVa system. Connecting those three cities, and the surrounding suburbs and UMass Lowell, with a light rail line or a bus rapid transit line, would improve the commute of the people already using those bus routes and draw more residents to public transit. This project undertook corridor-based alternatives and feasibility analysis that looked at a specific proposal for a high capacity transit line connecting the three cities that would be beneficial …

Prioritizing Climate Equity: A Qualitative Analysis Of The Massachusetts Mvp Program, Noah Gordon
Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning Masters Projects
The impacts of climate change are already being felt today and will continue to be felt for centuries. Thousands of scientists from around the world emphatically agree that anthropogenic emissions (emissions related to human activities) have caused an increase in the average global temperature since pre-industrial times, and will continue to elevate temperatures unless CO2 and other greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are drastically reduced (Working Group I 2021). Many governments at all scales around the globe have taken steps to mitigate GHG emissions. The US Environmental Protection Agency, for example, has set more stringent standards for the fuel efficiency of …
The Zanjeras Of Ilocos In The Northern Philippines: A Legacy Of Sustainable Resource Management, José A. Rivera Ph.D
The Zanjeras Of Ilocos In The Northern Philippines: A Legacy Of Sustainable Resource Management, José A. Rivera Ph.D
Faculty Publications
Zanjeras are farmer-managed irrigation systems that have endured for centuries in the Ilocos region of northern Luzon in the Philippines. These cooperative irrigation societies emerged during the Spanish regime when Augustinians were deployed to congregate indigenous populations into pueblos, convert them to Christianity, and raise tributes for the Crown. Zanjeras evolved from a blending of two traditions: the Iberian model of irrigation and indigenized practices of water-for-land exchanges with landowners and atar-holdings to distribute shares among the members. Like other community-based irrigation systems in Southeast Asia and globally, zanjeras are self-governed, long-enduring, and serve as exemplary models of …

Property Pillagers: Effects Of Dirty Urbanism, Chase Wilson, Kayli Clark
Property Pillagers: Effects Of Dirty Urbanism, Chase Wilson, Kayli Clark
Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
This podcast dives into American urbanism and its associated development targeting certain minority communities; the ill intentions to disrupt specific neighborhoods led us to refer to the practice as “dirty urbanism”. The pair of I-40 and Jefferson Street in north Nashville, alongside similarly treated areas across the United States, exemplify dirty urbanism. Exercising their raw power and ability to cover up to 90% of the costs, the federal government incentivizes the local governments to construct the highway system: a highway system used as a racially motivated tool to sever black-built urban fabrics. With the highways, vehicular space overrides …
Architecture And New Urbanism’S Relationship To Biomimicry And Floral Design, Alycia Timmerman
Architecture And New Urbanism’S Relationship To Biomimicry And Floral Design, Alycia Timmerman
Honors Theses
The craft of floral design is classified as an art and a science. Similarly, architecture is rooted in the two disciplines. After conducting research and exploring biomimicry through the design process, it became evident that the process of design for architecture and floral design are similar. This relationship can also be extended into the field of planning and the New Urbanism movement. This study explores the integration of floral design and biomimicry with architecture and New Urbanism at the scale of the building and city block.
Amtrak Staples Mill Station: Strategic Vision Plan 2023, Daniel S. Longest
Amtrak Staples Mill Station: Strategic Vision Plan 2023, Daniel S. Longest
Master of Urban and Regional Planning Capstone Projects
This plan proposes the replacement of the current Amtrak Staples Mill Station with a new facility designed to incorporate civic art, multi-use development, and fast and easy train boarding. Drawing on successful examples like Union Station in D.C. and Main Street Station in Richmond, this plan encourages stakeholders to adopt a strategic vision for the station and its vicinity as an asset to the region. An independent commission with equal representation from state agency representatives and residents would enact these improvements through a public-private partnership, including a transit-oriented development scheme for adjacent land.

Machine Learning Approach For Automated Detection Of Irregular Walking Surfaces For Walkability Assessment With Wearable Sensor, Hui R. Ng, Isidore Sossa, Yunwoo Nam, Jong-Hoon Youn
Community and Regional Planning Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity
The walkability of a neighborhood impacts public health and leads to economic and environmental benefits. The condition of sidewalks is a significant indicator of a walkable neighborhood as it supports and encourages pedestrian travel and physical activity. However, common sidewalk assessment practices are subjective, inefficient, and ineffective. Current alternate methods for objective and automated assessment of sidewalk surfaces do not consider pedestrians’ physiological responses. We developed a novel classification framework for the detection of irregular walking surfaces that uses a machine learning approach to analyze gait parameters extracted from a single wearable accelerometer. We also identified the most suitable location …
