The purpose of this research was to improve the effectiveness of facility design and construction for expeditionary installations in the Middle East. Specifically, this thesis sought to answer three research questions addressing current military construction policies as well as historical design of desert dwelling cultures, a comparison of current construction assemblies with indigenous design, and synthesis of indigenous design techniques with modern materials, techniques, and requirements. The research questions were answered through a comprehensive literature review, rudimentary quantitative analysis, and architectural design. The Department of Defense (DoD) has hundreds of thousands of facilities in its inventory, which consume billions of BTUSs of energy per year. Much of that energy is used to heat and cool the facility, and a great deal of this energy is lost through the building envelope. While new military construction works towards energy efficiency, the majority of DoD facilities were built over forty years ago with little regard to energy efficiency, and it is these facilities that have the greatest potential for energy efficient building envelope retrofits. The two mosques remaining in present-day Plovdiv, Bugaria or Ottoman Filibe are the Muradiye and Imaret mosques. The Murndiye Mosque, also known as the Ctm1a (or Friday) mosque built in ca. 1435 and the Imaret Mosque, founded in 1444, represent an important period of the history of the town vis-a-vis its transformation into an important urban center in the Ottoman province of Rumeli. The Imaret Mosque is an example of a reserve T-shaped imnret/zaviye which was surrounded by a charitable complex. It is also the monument whose study is more challenging because of the uncertainties posed by its changing functions. …
