Schools play an important role in the lives of children, and can play a larger role in the broader community. Throughout history, schools have existed that have been connected to the environment, whether it was to simply provide children with the opportunity to spend time outside, or to teach students about the natural world. With the state of climate change that exists today, connecting students to the environment is of utmost importance. Students must understand the environment, in order to appropriately understand the threat of climate change, and ultimately take action to combat it.

I propose a school of architecture focused on holistic approach to design, taking consideration for the various related fields to offer a positive learning environment. The building itself will serve as an educational tool, providing space for interactions to occur and for visitors to understand the inner workings of a school of architecture. The building should represent a progressive thought process and promote creativity and collaboration.

This design seeks to transform the Japanese educational experience through the use of architecture. The aim is to provide an alternative school that breaks from the uniformity of the current system and provides an educational environment that places an emphasis on interaction, community, and learning. The school would serve as a junior high school combined with a small community library. The school would accommodate 250-300 children. Ultimately, this school could serve as a model for future educational buildings within the Japanese educational system.

This school will provide students with a healthy learning environment that enforces proactive learning. It will allow for a variety of learning activities and play, a variety of spaces for independent and group activities, and overall freedom for the students. Also, the school will be flexible for whatever changes occur in the users and activities in the spaces over the life of the school. The building will be planned to maximize the amount of fresh air and sunlight to lessen the dependence on artificial light and HVAC systems.

This project explores the concept of school-centered community as a key aspect in assisting urban renewal through architecture. It employs this concept through the architectural design of a middle school in Baltimore, Maryland that has a focus on music. The existing context of an urban site in the Oldtown area is analyzed to generate a solution to the area’s educational problems as well as to provide an urban renewal plan. In order to develop a project that has great potential to succeed, the projects site was specifically chosen based on its context.
