Architectural Engineering
Form finding, testing, and construction of funicular double-layered shells in an interdisciplinary format with a focus on designing a shade structure for the San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden Children’s Pavilion. In the process, challenges such as connection design, materiality, storage, and more are explored and refined in relation to shell structures.

Journeyman International, also known as JI, is a non-profit organization that groups together design and construction students with organizations looking to build humanitarian projects around the world. This pairing is beneficial for both the organization because they get free design and construction expertise, as well as for the students who get real-world experience. The Take Heart School is a planned school and grounds for the region of Migori Kenya. Take Heart Africa is a fair trade store with all profits going to help the impoverished communities of Kenya. The three-acre site will have a school with eight classrooms, offices, a …
Analysing Bim Implementation In The Egyptian Construction Industry, Ayman Ahmed Ezzat Othman, Mohamed Marzouk, Heba Elsaay
Analysing Bim Implementation In The Egyptian Construction Industry, Ayman Ahmed Ezzat Othman, Mohamed Marzouk, Heba Elsaay
Architectural Engineering
Purpose – This research is built up upon exploring the concepts of building information modeling (BIM) adoption and strategy formulation with the aim to develop a strategy for implementing BIM in the Egyptian construction industry. Design/methodology/approach – The development of the BIM implementation strategy was based on two pillars, namely the literature review and results of the survey questionnaire and interviews. First, the review of literature helped investigating the BIM challenges and international strategies developed to implement BIM worldwide. Findings – The research presented recommendations to assist policymakers in Egypt to facilitate BIM implementation. Originality/value – Although multiple frameworks have …

Analysis Of High Rise Structures, Elitsa P. Vutova
Architectural Engineering
The design of a high rise tower involves many moving parts and is best done in collaboration with all construction disciplines. This report examines the basic steps and principles followed and discovered along the collaborative design process between Architectural and Architectural Engineering students of two high rise building systems. The report will look at physical model tests and digital model analyses. It will also follow the design of two high rise towers proposed for San Francisco, CA: The Crystal and the HOODOO. The tower design includes a study of possible lateral loading systems, a dual core and outrigger system analysis …
Topology And Form Finding Via Genetic Algorithms, Michael Goldenberg, Nick Coburn
Topology And Form Finding Via Genetic Algorithms, Michael Goldenberg, Nick Coburn

The following presents an approach to early applications of the Galapagos program as a means to optimize structural forms. The process was conducted with Rhino’s Grasshopper program, the structural analysis plug-in, Karamba, and the genetic algorithm solver, Galapagos. This topological form finding process was based on flexible parameters that modified brace and column locations, and diaphragm size and positions.
This process worked by having Galapagos modify a parametric model which had initial randomly generated variables for the genomes. After structural analysis, Galapagos was tasked with changing the form in order to minimize overall displacement of the structure. Being an evolutionary …
Poly Canyon Entryway Redesign, Antonio Emiliano Baldazo
Poly Canyon Entryway Redesign, Antonio Emiliano Baldazo
Architectural Engineering
Persistence of Vision investigates the relationship between past, present, and future perceptions of place in the Poly Canyon area. Persistence of Vision takes up the Cal Poly mantra of “learn by doing,” and explores its pedagogical value by engaging with theory, design, engineering and implementation. This project is manifest in the form of a series of signs in the so-called “architectural graveyard” area; with an eye towards changing the name, perceptions, and narratives about this place. This project hopes to create a recognition within the minds of students that this place is, and was intended to be, a place for …

Architectural Engineering
Interdisciplinary senior project by Hunter Caldwell, Kelly Clancy, Kevin Theodore Khieu, Shaina Kim, and George Suarez. Project involves architectural design, engineering analysis, and construction of a thin-shelled concrete structure.

A team of for students designed and constructed a shade structure for a local church and day care center. The group was responsible for developing a design which addressed the needs of the congregation as well as the needs of the toddler day care center. The team developed a steel framed scheme with a panelized metal roof which provided a long lasting solution and minimal maintenance costs.
Case Study: Epoch Estate Wines Production Facility, Kevin Christopher Marx
Case Study: Epoch Estate Wines Production Facility, Kevin Christopher Marx
Architectural Engineering
The project will be a case study performed on Epoch Estate Wines Production Facility in Templeton California. The building is a cut and cover project which was designed to hug the existing oak trees on site. The building serves as a capstone to the Architectural Engineering curriculum because it seamlessly combines the four main structural building materials: steel, concrete, masonry and timber, while also including every lateral force resisting system into one succinct project. During the design of the project, meetings with the architecture of record and client representative occurred where discussion about design procedure and client’s needs took place. …
