Architecture Of Social Learning And Knowing: Using Social Learning And Knowing Perspectives And Design Thinking To Frame And Create Change In A Workplace Redesign Project, Amin Mojtahedi
Theses and Dissertations
There is a consensus among many theorists and practitioners from the fields of architecture, learning, and organizations that the ability to orchestrate learning and knowledge practices in the workplace creates potential for new and valuable ideas to emerge. However, due to the changing nature of the learning and knowing landscape in the knowledge economy, the role of the physical space pertaining to learning and knowing practices needs to be reexamined. To do so, and to make theories of learning and knowledge relevant to the physical space, this research study (1) uses a strand of theories and perspectives emerged in the …
High-Performance Building Envelope: An Energy Evaluation Of Double-Skin Facades Linked Into The Earth, Payman Sadeghi
High-Performance Building Envelope: An Energy Evaluation Of Double-Skin Facades Linked Into The Earth, Payman Sadeghi

ABSTRACT
HIGH-PERFORMANCE BUILDING ENVELOPE:
AN ENERGY EVALUATION OF DOUBLE-SKIN FACADES LINKED INTO THE EARTH

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 2017
Under the Supervision of Professor D. Michael Utzinger
Good Architecture inclusively addresses all the matters that should and could be considered including but not limited to economic, social, or environmental dimensions. One might perceive ecological architecture in the same way; in reaching high-performance architecture regarding the “good,” wherein the integration of an ecological worldview should be recognized as a fundamental goal. In this domain, energy is surely a crucial concern. This dissertation’s focus is to examine ways to …
Reducing The Environmental Impacts Of Building Materials: Embodied Energy Analysis Of A High-Performance Building, Layla Qarout
Reducing The Environmental Impacts Of Building Materials: Embodied Energy Analysis Of A High-Performance Building, Layla Qarout
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to assess the embodied energy and carbon emissions of structural building materials, and determine environmental savings associated with construction. In common architectural practice, the analysis of the environmental cost of materials is typically not taken into account. This can be attributed to the lack of available data, loyalty to conventional construction methods, and complexity of embodied energy calculations. Although efforts are made to ensure accuracy of the information contained in energy databases, they are based on public domain sources and the “best” energy and carbon coefficients, with no guarantee to accuracy. Therefore, it is …
Walkability And Accessibility: Users' Perspectives Of A Planned Neighborhood, Nancy S. Chu
Walkability And Accessibility: Users' Perspectives Of A Planned Neighborhood, Nancy S. Chu
Theses and Dissertations
The transformation of the Westlawn Housing Development, one of the largest housing projects in Wisconsin, has led to this research. The old development, which was modeled after the military barracks style for its uniformity and practicality, is in extreme contrast to the new design influenced by the Traditional Neighborhood Development (TND). TND was well received by the middle class as an alternative to the suburban sprawl sweeping the nation in the 1980s. However, research suggests that most TND’s are premised on upper-middle-class preference and do not focus on the housing needs of the general population.
This research will explore if …
Housing Adjustment Behaviors Of Korean Elderly Immigrants Residing In Affordable Housing: The Cultural Aspects Of Residential Experiences, Myounghee Jorn
Housing Adjustment Behaviors Of Korean Elderly Immigrants Residing In Affordable Housing: The Cultural Aspects Of Residential Experiences, Myounghee Jorn
Theses and Dissertations
The present study is an explorative study that employs mixed methods for examining the daily life patterns and housing adjustment behaviors of low-income elderly Korean immigrants residing in public housing in the Chicago metropolitan area. It particularly focuses on identifying the cultural practices of research participants and the influence of those cultural practices on using residential features, evaluating them, and developing coping responses to satisfy dwelling needs.
The study develops upon Canter’s theories of place (1977; 1991; 1997) and Weisman’s model of place (2001), and integrates Rapoport’s concepts of culture (1980; 2008) for exploring the residential experiences of elderly Korean …
Exploring The Costs And Values Of The Household Model In Long Term Care, Mark Alan Proffitt
Exploring The Costs And Values Of The Household Model In Long Term Care, Mark Alan Proffitt
Theses and Dissertations
As part of the culture change movement in long term care, nursing homes are transforming into person centered living settings that reject the previous medical emphasis that dominated the industry. The household model is one approach to achieve this goal by systemically altering the traditional nursing home’s organization, routines and physical setting with an emphasis on recreating familiar, domestic places for its residents. The household model is hallmarked by three key characteristics: 1) the creation of a smaller functional group of residents within the nursing home that is delineated by the environment (24 residents or less) with the 2) intent …
The Architecture Of Place: Amaranth Bakery And Café, Biwer Bella
The Architecture Of Place: Amaranth Bakery And Café, Biwer Bella
Architecture Student Research
The goal of this essay is to show that Amaranth Bakery and Café in Washington Park, Milwaukee better represents its community than other buildings in the area. The aspects I chose to discuss are the building’s physical character, its unique setting and the work of its dedicated owners, David Boucher and Stephanie Shipley. This essay discusses these three facets of the business and how they allow for a very successful bakery in the struggling neighborhood of Washington Park. Some of the aspects discussed are the building’s front-back morphology, the way the community utilizes the bakery and the collaborative work of …
