Constructing Identity: Exploring Varying Degrees Of Public And Private Space, Brian Jeffrey Cutler Aug 2008

Constructing Identity: Exploring Varying Degrees Of Public And Private Space, Brian Jeffrey Cutler

Masters Theses

While there are many ways that the individual, group, and public constructs its identity, this thesis focuses on the types of spaces that individuals, groups and the public inhabit and the specific ways that each inhabits space. It is possible to associate the individual’s construction of identity with private space and the public’s with public space. However, both public and private space and the layers between the two are important as the individual, the group, and the public construct their identity. Furthermore, the display of identity does not depend on public space, but rather can occur at various layers of …

Investing In The Future:The Reinvigoration Of Educational Facilities Proposal For A Performing Arts Magnet School In Knoxville, Tennessee, Luke A. Sims Aug 2008

Investing In The Future:The Reinvigoration Of Educational Facilities Proposal For A Performing Arts Magnet School In Knoxville, Tennessee, Luke A. Sims

Masters Theses

A student’s environment directly affects his ability to learn. School design must take into consideration the growing needs of the educator, the students, and their community. This research establishes design principles for new K-12 educational facilities. These principles will be based upon successes of past educational facilities, new educational demands, new technologies, stricter security guidelines, sustainable design, and the desire to create a connection to the school’s local community.

Liminal Space In Architecture: Threshold And Transition, Patrick Troy Zimmerman May 2008

Liminal Space In Architecture: Threshold And Transition, Patrick Troy Zimmerman

Masters Theses

The limen is defined as the transitional threshold between two fixed states in cultural rites of passage or between two dissimilar spaces in architecture. The study of rites of passage provides an analogy from which principles can be drawn for the design of a transformative space. The characteristics that define liminal space include layering, dissolution, blurring, and ambiguity and have the ability to transform the occupant of that space as they move through it. The experience of liminal space poses a discontinuity and leads the occupant to question their surroundings, thus leading to heightened awareness of the space as a …

Phenomenology In Dwelling: Culture And Meaning Of Place; A Proposal For A Mountainside Dwelling, James Robert Maveety May 2008

Phenomenology In Dwelling: Culture And Meaning Of Place; A Proposal For A Mountainside Dwelling, James Robert Maveety

Masters Theses

This is an exploration into the design and perception of domestic space through a combination of a vernacular analysis and an investigation into phenomenology. A study of the phenomenology of architectural building materials within the context of a cultural background will provide insight into methods through which the quality of a space may be enhanced by the infusion of cultural meaning through vernacular inspiration. The knowledge gained from this investigation will lead to a design that will use a translation of vernacular building methods to reinforce and give meaning to the elements of domestic space.

Illuminated Dimensions: Providing An Intellectual Or Spiritual Enlightenment Through Existence, Michelle Renee Barton May 2008

Illuminated Dimensions: Providing An Intellectual Or Spiritual Enlightenment Through Existence, Michelle Renee Barton

Masters Theses

Individuals go through a series of emotional experiences throughout the day when interacting with architecture, which can range from the normative or everyday to a complete spiritual awareness. These experiences can be shaped by the spaces they inhabit, and furthermore, by various qualities of light, providing a heightened awareness or shift in ones perception. By understanding four conditions the architect can begin to design with light. These conditions are; understanding the people that will interact with a space, understanding the task and emotions typically associated with it, understanding how people typically perceive qualities of light, and understanding how the architect …

The Temporal Life Of A Site: Photomontage And Meaning, Jennifer Martillie Bradley May 2008

The Temporal Life Of A Site: Photomontage And Meaning, Jennifer Martillie Bradley

Masters Theses

This thesis is an exploration of an urban heterotopia. Through the examination of the temporal life of a site, in combination with visual techniques of control, a proposed intervention transforms the site and its associated meaning/memory. The methodology involves memory and process, and an understanding of how memories are constructed, and why. Processes of defamiliarization, abstraction, and estrangement are given special emphasis, in order to demonstrate how a site can be transformed through design. The design is informed through exercises in collage, montage, and assemblage in order to cull out the ghosts of a site: its associations, narratives, and connections …
