Modular Adaptivity : The Plug-In Apartment, Bryce Stegmayer
Modular Adaptivity : The Plug-In Apartment, Bryce Stegmayer
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
Within current architecture, many buildings are seemingly just copies of an original design that hasn’t changed in the slightest in ages. It will be placed on a site and left there to fulfill its single purpose. When this purpose is done, the building will become vacant and will be an everlasting mark of how we don’t think ahead. I’ve come to know these buildings as “one and done” architecture. They are a contradiction to the concept of sustainability and lack any foresight for their future impact. This thesis is an approach to make a change to this previous way of …
Adaptive Assemblies: A Scalable Solution To Atlanta's Housing Crisis, Claudia Aguilar
Adaptive Assemblies: A Scalable Solution To Atlanta's Housing Crisis, Claudia Aguilar
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
Our home city of Atlanta is experiencing levels of growth that surpass anything we have witnessed in the last century. It is projected that within the next ten years the city will grow by 2.5 million people to a population of 7 million. With the surge of population influx reaching a record high of 2% growth per year, the available housing is practically bursting at the seams. Supply is low and demand is high. In effect, the average one-bedroom apartment runs for 1,800 dollars per month. The city is desperately seeking new opportunities to provide affordable housing at an expeditious …

The Bahay Kubo Alternative, Reesa Winters
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
This thesis “The Bahay Kubo Alternative” aims to create an architectural solution that successfully provides alternative building methods, materials, planning, and strategy for current and future stilt homes in the Philippines.
The goal is to increase the longevity of stilt homes and give the residents a sense of ownership and belonging. Moreover, it incorporates adaptable design strategies that take future community growth as well as health & wellness into consideration. This thesis proposes modular stilt homes with alternative structures and designs to prepare the residents for natural disasters and provide them with cleaner environments.

Festive Space, John C. Goddard
Festive Space, John C. Goddard
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
Atlanta struggles with a challenge for its citizens in the form of pedestrianism. Over time, the city’s infrastructure has morphed into one that encourages vehicular movement. This leads to a breakdown in the use of streets for pedestrians outside of their strictly desired destination. Eventually this compounds to encourage against socialization. Furthermore, citizens may be affected mentally and emotionally when they come in contact with people less frequently. The design idea of this thesis revolves around creating incidental spaces in people’s path of travel that encourage stopping and even socializing. Revitalization helps not only the pedestrian scene, but also with …
Sheltered City: A Prevention For Homelessness Through Sheltered Designs, Kena Fairfax
Sheltered City: A Prevention For Homelessness Through Sheltered Designs, Kena Fairfax
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
“Nothing but stable housing fundamentally differentiates those who experience homelessness and those who don’t, and all people deserve the human right to housing (pg. 1),” quoted by the National Health Care of the Homeless Council, can serve as a driving influence in developing solutions to address homelessness. The poignant experience that homeless people shared and described serve as an inspiration to better these individuals’ lives. As a substitute, approaching homelessness in a political or financial position, this thesis is to provide solutions to shelters architecturally.
Delving into precedents, each are separated into four categories such as singular, community, group, and …
Seaport City Adaptation: Buenaventura's Settlements, Mariana Corredor
Seaport City Adaptation: Buenaventura's Settlements, Mariana Corredor
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
Buenaventura is one of Colombia's most important cities, it houses one of the biggest ports on the continent and covers more than 60% of Colombia's sea imports and exports. Unfortunately, most of the population is impoverished and lives in improvised shelters made up of wood, trash, and debris with no access to potable water, electricity, and sewage systems. How can architecture be used to create better conditions? How can we use local materials in Colombia to design affordable and aesthetically pleasing settlements for the inhabitants of Buenaventura?
My research starts with materials that are sustainable, economical, local, and recyclable, that …
Floating Edge: Modular Living, Jonathan Cruz
Floating Edge: Modular Living, Jonathan Cruz
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
This thesis aims to develop an alternate solution for rising sea levels. By adopting flotation technology which is successfully implemented in building on water. This thesis primary objective is to examine and discuss the relationships between floating architecture, and the possibility of a new modular way of living in these coastal areas. This thesis will also explore the technologies and processes incorporated in the foundations of floating constructions and the accessibility of the structures through well-planned grids. To develop an alternate solution for land reclamation and rising sea levels.

Medkit: Modular Emergency Deployment, Christian Ladefoged, Zamila Karimi
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
This thesis began with exploring low-cost prefab dwelling units to be implemented in struggling communities with extreme poverty, homelessness, and unemployment. The initial research on modular units shifted to focus on our healthcare infrastructure challenges here at home given the COVID-19 crisis.
“Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has had a substantial impact on racial and ethnic minority populations and essential workers in the United States …”1 This disease disproportionately impacts poor and rural communities in the United States, showing double the mortality than urban areas simply due to the neglected environment2. Emergency assistance is needed to expand the …
State Of Independence: Reinterpreting Senior Living Through Backyard Homes, Trevor Sparrow
State Of Independence: Reinterpreting Senior Living Through Backyard Homes, Trevor Sparrow
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
If a senior was able to live within a network of family and friends who could ensure a good quality of life was being met, as well as live in a space that was intentionally designed with their accessibility needs in mind, the independence and health of the senior can be well maintained into the final stages of their life. I am proposing the development of premanufactured homes which are designed specifically to address a senior's accessibility and care needs. These homes will be placed on the property of the existing home of the senior, their loved ones, or a …

Informing Space: A Human Centered Approach To Designing An (Adaptive) Modular Dwelling On Mars, Hala Alfalih, Hala Alfalih
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
With tech giants like SpaceX, Blue Origin, and Lockheed Martin teaming with NASA to spearhead the mission to Mars, this provides an opportunity for architecture and design to engage in the conversation of the inevitable future of space exploration.
Research will explore structure, module and habitat as a means of developing an adaptive and parametrically designed dwelling for the first astronauts that will land on Mars. This thesis explores the intersection of the physical built environment and the psychology of astronauts in a remote, foreign and harsh environment. How can a shelter provide the essential needs to inhabit Mars while …
