A Profile Of Travelers Who Are Willing To Stay In Environmentally Friendly Hotel, Michelle Millar, Karl J. Mayer
A Profile Of Travelers Who Are Willing To Stay In Environmentally Friendly Hotel, Michelle Millar, Karl J. Mayer
Hospitality Review
The purpose of this study is to describe travelers that have indicated they are willing to stay in green hotel in order to better understand the market segment. There is very little knowledge about these types of travelers, thus making it difficult for hoteliers to know how to create marketing campaigns that target them. Data were collected via an online survey company. Behavior characteristics provided a more distinguishing profile of the traveler than did demographics or psychographics. Most travelers were willing to pay the same amount for a green hotel as a traditional hotel. Implications, future research, and limitations are …
Lo Stato Dell’Arte. Fascismo E Legittimazione Culturale, Monica Cioli, David Rifkind
Lo Stato Dell’Arte. Fascismo E Legittimazione Culturale, Monica Cioli, David Rifkind
School of Architecture
Transdisciplinary Teams And Aging In Place Design : The Interior Designer's Role, Liliana Alicia Custy
Transdisciplinary Teams And Aging In Place Design : The Interior Designer's Role, Liliana Alicia Custy
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examined factors influencing participatory research team effectiveness in aging in place (AIP) design (Stokols, et al„, 2008). Although research on AIP design characterizes AIP as collaborative process, there are few studies on the factors that affect collaboration in participatory research applied to AIP. This study used a qualitative narrative strategy in a multiple case-study analysis conducted from a transdisciplinary research (TR) perspective. The case-study focused on the factors that enhanced and constrained Open n Prototype Initiative (OPI) team effectiveness.
TR is a precise type of teamwork of integrative endeavors, focused on the science and society interface, and aimed …
Improving Concept Learning In Green Building By Addressing Students' Learning Styles And Prior Knowledge, Sreelatha Chunduri
Improving Concept Learning In Green Building By Addressing Students' Learning Styles And Prior Knowledge, Sreelatha Chunduri
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In green building there is a requirement for the collaboration of students from different disciplines in order to solve challenging problems. Successful collaboration depends on the establishment of a common understanding of the subject matter among those involved. To gain common understanding concept learning is critical. A concept learning process may be improved when factors affecting it are addressed. Prior knowledge and learning styles of the students may influence the way they learn concepts. This thesis is focused on studying the relationship between a concept learning process and prior knowledge and learning styles of students. An experiment was conducted by …

Cultural Identity In Landscape Architecture, Renovation Of Managua's Lakeside, Julio Alvarez
Cultural Identity In Landscape Architecture, Renovation Of Managua's Lakeside, Julio Alvarez
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines a design approach in landscape architecture in which cultural and historical values are reinterpreted in a contemporary urban environment. The site of this project is located in Managua's lakeside area, which was destroyed by hurricane Mitch in 1998. The lakeside area has been an attraction to Managua's residents because of its beautiful views and fresh breezes.
The majority of Nicaragua's population is of indigenous descent; however, Managua's urban environment is predominantly of European influence. The pre-Columbian heritage of Nicaraguans is hidden in their cultural expressions, such as the names of places and religious rituals.
This project provides …
How Monuments Shape Urban Identity, John O. Angée
How Monuments Shape Urban Identity, John O. Angée
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Monuments in our society commemorate historical events, acts or heroes, and educate people about them. Monuments are landmarks that stand out from other buildings to give the city identity and order.
This thesis asks how a monument can be designed to project a clear image at a distance and articulate a spatial experience at close range.
Two important monuments that form part of the life of America serve as examples: (1) The Statue of Liberty, in the New York Harbor, that has become the visual icon of New York if not the nation and (2) The Holocaust Memorial in Miami …
The Analogy Of Skin In Architecture Revisited, Rene Croteau
The Analogy Of Skin In Architecture Revisited, Rene Croteau
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis re-examines the implications of skin as an architectural analogy. The metaphor of skin has a long history o f usage in architecture, particularly regarding the building enclosure system. This thesis focuses on the role o f the built skin as a place of interaction between the inside and outside, rather than a simple physical barrier. Through an examination of the structure and functions of human skin and building enclosures I investigated issues o f permeability in the design of a center for cartographic research in Miami Beach. I explored layering and interdigitation as strategies for controlling the passage …
Reactive Architecture : Urban Recreational Center, Michael Figueredo
Reactive Architecture : Urban Recreational Center, Michael Figueredo
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores how architecture can be designed to react to changing conditions. In the design I address how the occupants of a building may change the exterior façade based on a change of events or on group size. This creates an architectural language on the façade for pedestrians and motorists to read those activities that are occurring.
The design project is a hybrid recreational center and plaza that is designed for the use of small groups and can be adapted for larger groups. By manipulating the ground plane I create spaces where the spectator becomes the display and the …
Transitional Areas Between Public And Private Space, Hernan Beillard
Transitional Areas Between Public And Private Space, Hernan Beillard
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study analyzes transitional areas between public and private space in order to develop a design that might improve social interaction in the city. Architectural elements in specific pedestrian friendly spaces within the Miami area were identified and analyzed as social spaces in terms developed by Ali Mandanipour.
Proximity, visual permeability, intersection, layering, and monumentality are design strategies used in many projects to enhance individual encounters. These strategies typically apply to transitional areas and serve as the direct physical links perceived by individuals moving between public and private areas. This project explores the different approaches to transitional areas in the …
Architecture As Contextual Re-Interpretation : A Mixed-Use Cultural Center In Old Havana, Cuba, Gabriel Fuentes
Architecture As Contextual Re-Interpretation : A Mixed-Use Cultural Center In Old Havana, Cuba, Gabriel Fuentes
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis addresses contextual design in the city, particularly the design of contemporary architecture in historic places.
The research focuses on an analysis of Old Havana's urban architecture, particularly the spatial qualities of colonial Cuban houses as well as visual, social, and functional qualities of their urban façades. Additionally, I analyze specific mid-twentieth century houses that reinterpret Cuba’s colonial architecture in order to derive architectural principles that are tested in my design process.
The design project is a mixed-use cultural center at the Plaza Vieja in Old Havana, Cuba. As a cultural destination currently under going restoration, the Plaza Vieja …
Sustaining Culture Through Architecture : How Can Local, Vernacular Architectural Principles Be Adapted To Contemporary Design In A Village In Guyana, Davina Peters Bittner
Sustaining Culture Through Architecture : How Can Local, Vernacular Architectural Principles Be Adapted To Contemporary Design In A Village In Guyana, Davina Peters Bittner
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores how architecture can adapt local vernacular design principles to contemporary building design in a rural setting. Vernacular buildings in Guyana present a unique and coherent set of design principles developed in response to climatic and cultural conditions. The concept of “habitus” proposed by philosopher Pierre Bourdieu describing the evolving nature of social culture was used to interpret Guyanese local buildings. These principles were then applied to the design of a Women’s Center in the village of Port Mourant on the east coast of Guyana. The design specifically interpreted the “bottom-house” of local Guyanese architecture, an inherently flexible …
Cultural Influences : Visual Traces Of The Cuban Community In Hialeah, José Antonio Aguada
Cultural Influences : Visual Traces Of The Cuban Community In Hialeah, José Antonio Aguada
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines specific changes and modifications made to the domestic architecture of Hialeah that relate to the construction of cultural identity. Much of the study is based upon oral histories from twelve (12) Cuban immigrants now residing in Hialeah, focusing on their renovated houses as architectural responses to cultural and social changes in their community and family life.
The research focused specifically on those renovations that transformed standard developers' houses into the "Cuban" home. A shared theme was the creation of additions, where the point of connections between the existing and the new structures as well as how these …
Kit-Of-Parts Architecture : An Exploration Into The Standardization And Simplification Of An Urban Residential Building Unit, John Anderson Allmand
Kit-Of-Parts Architecture : An Exploration Into The Standardization And Simplification Of An Urban Residential Building Unit, John Anderson Allmand
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis focuses on the design of a construction method that utilizes a single adaptable kit-of-parts system. The new system is designed to be flexible while also enhancing construction speeds without severely limiting the building's ability to merge into an urban fabric. This thesis proposes a residential structure to be built from a handful of simple structural units.
This is accomplished through the design of a residential building situated in an area of Miami currently under reconstruction.
Parallel Relationships, Architecture And Water : The Urban Spa, Tobi Aycock
Parallel Relationships, Architecture And Water : The Urban Spa, Tobi Aycock
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the relationship of architecture and water through the design of an urban spa that offers both a bodily and a poetic experience of water. Research included investigation of recent architectural projects that enhance and order the view, sound, and touch of water as well as projects that integrate fountains, showers and reflecting pools into the experience of a building.
In the design of the spa, the movement of water was based metaphorically on the natural water cycle: evaporation, condensation and collection of water in pools. The building presents fountains, rivulets, and pools in a descending sequence that …
Baywalk Developing Landscape Memory, Rebecca Agnes Conable
Baywalk Developing Landscape Memory, Rebecca Agnes Conable
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The primary purpose of this thesis was to investigate the narrative potential in the contours of a site, specifically, in contours shaped by dredge and fill. Contours provide a record of weather, growth and erosion as well as the processes of dredge and fill. In South Florida, our modification of both the coastline and inland swamps document the history of our occupation of the land. The record or memory of this change is often apparent only as an absence. This thesis design exposes the landscape narrative of dredge and fill in Miami's Biscayne Bay through the design of two areas …
Mobile Architecture : Offering New Perceptions Of The City, Valeria G. Bettoli
Mobile Architecture : Offering New Perceptions Of The City, Valeria G. Bettoli
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis is to explore the design of mobile architecture that challenges traditional ideas of site through the design of a museum to commemorate immigration to the United States. This thesis develops a floating, moveable, inhabitable structure that moves on the inter-coastal waterways of South Florida, within the public areas of Miami. The floating museum offers new perceptions of the city and new means of occupying its various settings. Its architectural elements do not change but are read differently in each location. The museum brings its exhibitions to the city as an event. One moment it is …
Additive Architecture, Marina Gabriella Giammattei
Additive Architecture, Marina Gabriella Giammattei
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
My project addresses additive architecture, a method of adding built elements to an existing fabric designed so they reveal something about a place, either by emphasizing its characteristics, telling a story, or interpreting an existing historic fabric. The built fabric of older areas in North American cities has often become fragmented as old buildings are demolished and new structures inserted. Additive architecture addresses this condition by considering new design not as an insertion on a site but as a modification to a site, where something new is used to reconsider something old. In my project I designed a Museum of …
Retail Centers For Community : Addressing Both Pedestrian And Car Traffic, Luis Asturias
Retail Centers For Community : Addressing Both Pedestrian And Car Traffic, Luis Asturias
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis was to redesign a commercial center in Miami, Florida in a manner that incorporates the needs of pedestrians as well as the automobile.
In my research, I studied projects that had been successful at integrating cars in retail design. I applied the strategies learned from this research to the design of a center that creates a positive interaction of pedestrian and car traffic, addressing the needs of the surrounding community.
I designed a master plan that includes a mix of residential, retail, commercial and parking space. The parking is designed so that the retail center …

Palm Cottage Garden Historic Preservation, Vrushali J. Bharadwaj
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Historic landscapes are vital elements of our nation's cultural continuum and must be protected as a part of living fabric of the community. This thesis addressed the preservation of historic landscape gardens, focusing on design strategies that can make historic time legible in landscape. It proposed a landscape plan for the preservation of Palm Cottage Garden in Gotha, Florida, a significant historic landscape resource.
To determine the criteria used to establish how and to what period the estate should be restored, the Secretary of the Interior's Guidelines for the Treatment of Cultural Landscapes was followed. This process involved documenting the …
Kinetic Performance : A Study In Portable Architecture, Ernest Brian Abuin
Kinetic Performance : A Study In Portable Architecture, Ernest Brian Abuin
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to explore a new way of experiencing a performance space using the portability and flexibility of a cargo container. Since the 17th century there has been a split between theater, as a written work, and architecture. Theater has lost its founding essence becoming more about the structure and less about the performance.
Contemporary theater designs came through the development of street performances, which developed into theater types such as the Black Box and lately video and projection screening. With the exploration of kinetic uses in architecture and defragmentation of a cargo container there is …
Design Of An Adequate Women's Asylum : Analysis And Architectonic Proposal For A Home For Women With Children In Need, Carmelina Alvarez-Giboyeaux
Design Of An Adequate Women's Asylum : Analysis And Architectonic Proposal For A Home For Women With Children In Need, Carmelina Alvarez-Giboyeaux
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to architecturally design a safe space where abused women with children can go to encourage changes in attitudes, beliefs, feelings, and behavioral patterns that hold back the progress of victims toward more satisfying lives.
This study then achieves the conditions in existing battered women's shelters facilities in order to understand the building programming. Several problems were identified. Existing shelters typically isolate battered women from society, locating them far from the urban context. They encourage only minimal education and lack spaces that enhance positive thinking. Considerations for design strategies were divided into different variables: the …
Boundary : An Exploration Of Architecture's Power To Mark A Boundary, Ramon A. Arbesu
Boundary : An Exploration Of Architecture's Power To Mark A Boundary, Ramon A. Arbesu
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Cities are no longer recognizing their boundaries beyond their legal or political implications. This thesis explored the architecture of a boundary in the design of a structure that visually and symbolically marked the current Miami-Dade County development limit along Krome Avenue. This limit ultimately separates the city from the endangered Everglades ecosystem. Through the examination of ancient boundaries such as Medieval and Renaissance Military fortifications, as well as contemporary interventions such as Steven Holl's "Edge of the City Projects", an architectural vocabulary was developed considering the Double Wall, Bastion, Rampart, and Gate principles. However, rather than considering these principles to …
