Revisions To Tilt-Up Concrete Building Design: The Backstory Behind Changes Encompassed In 2009 International Building Code, John W. Lawson Mar 2012

Revisions To Tilt-Up Concrete Building Design: The Backstory Behind Changes Encompassed In 2009 International Building Code, John W. Lawson

Architectural Engineering

The 2009 International Building Code (IBC) has in its scope some significant revisions that greatly affect the design of tilt-up concrete buildings, but to the lay engineer it appears that some of these provisions are a step backwards. With the IBC’s referencing standards including ACI 318-08 (concrete) and the 2008 NDS SDPWS (timber), these documents have significant changes that become effective with the adoption of the IBC. We as engineers expect building codes to advance the state of the art with each successive edition. The 2009 International Building Code (IBC) and the Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete (ACI 318-08) …

Finite-Element Limit Analysis Of The Tucker High School Gymnasium Roof Failure, Peter T. Laursen, Edmond P. Saliklis Mar 2012

Finite-Element Limit Analysis Of The Tucker High School Gymnasium Roof Failure, Peter T. Laursen, Edmond P. Saliklis

Architectural Engineering

The Randolph Tucker High School gymnasium roof failure of 1970 has received much scholarly attention. This study will provide a conclusion to a large body of previously published works by means of limit state analysis of the roof failure using state of the art parametric finite-element modeling. Parametric modeling within a general purpose finite-element analysis program allows for extremely rapid changes to the model because key terms are objects or parameters that can be adjusted internally by the program, rather than laboriously entered by the user. The failure of the roof was investigated by means of a limit state analysis, …

Quantifying The Life Cycle Benefits Of Performance-Based Design In Sustainable Design, David Isaac Carmona Mar 2012

Quantifying The Life Cycle Benefits Of Performance-Based Design In Sustainable Design, David Isaac Carmona

Master's Theses

ABSTRACT

Quantifying the Life Cycle Benefits of Performance-Based Design in Sustainable Design

David Carmona

For this thesis, a method is developed and tested for use with performance based design to quantify the sustainable and financial benefits of designing buildings to a structural performance level higher than Life-Safety. This paper starts to answer the question, “which would be a better investment: build structures to a performance level of Immediate Occupancy (IO) with the likelihood of less damage and downtime after an earthquake or continue to build to the building code’s implied minimum performance level of Life-Safety (LS)?”

An ASCE 7-05 designed …

Integration Of Bicycling And Walking Facilities Into The Infrastructure Of Urban Communities, Cornelius Nuworsoo, Erin Cooper, Katherine Cushing, Eugene Jud

City and Regional Planning

Several manuals, handbooks and web resources exist to provide varied guidance on planning for and designing bicycle and pedestrian facilities, yet there are no specific indications about which of the varied treatments in these guides work well for users. This project highlights best practices and identifies program characteristics associated with high levels of non-motorized travel, with an emphasis on bicyclists and pedestrians. It highlights practices in the California communities of Davis, Palo Alto and San Luis Obispo. The case studies are used to illustrate how urban communities have integrated non-motorized transportation modes into the physical infrastructure and worked to educate …

Spectral Amplification Of Seismic Motion Travelling Through Natural Sand Deposits, Pradipta Chakrabortty, Radu Popescu Jan 2012

Spectral Amplification Of Seismic Motion Travelling Through Natural Sand Deposits, Pradipta Chakrabortty, Radu Popescu

Architectural Engineering

Guidelines for seismic spectral amplification are provided in current building codes based on soil strength/stiffness by means of seismic site class. However, current codes do not make a difference between fully saturated and unsaturated soil deposits and do not account for effects of soil heterogeneity on seismic amplification. This study investigates the effect of natural small scale soil heterogeneity and degree of saturation on spectral amplification by means of transient nonlinear finite element analyses. Only cohesionless soil (sand) is considered in this study. The effects of presence of a structure are also studied for soils with two different relative densities. …

Shelter And Development, Hemalata C. Dandekar Jan 2012

Shelter And Development, Hemalata C. Dandekar

City and Regional Planning

The importance of a house in enabling individuals and families to attain physical shelter from inclement weather, provide security, a ‘grounded’ attachment to place, and enhance the quality of life of residents is an idea that has universal acceptance. Particularly since the Second World War, it has become an integral part of the popular imagination. The almost iconic status of what a house represents to upwardly mobile, nuclear, families is reflected in the great expansion of industries involved in real estate and housing development. This expansion includes the production for, and growth of, a formalized building and construction industry, and …

Numerical Simulation Of Centrifuge Tests On Homogeneous And Heterogeneous Soil Models, Pradipta Chakrabortty, Radu Popescu Dec 2011

Numerical Simulation Of Centrifuge Tests On Homogeneous And Heterogeneous Soil Models, Pradipta Chakrabortty, Radu Popescu

Architectural Engineering

Soil liquefaction is a major cause of seismic damage in cohessionless soil during earthquakes. From past numerical and experimental research it has been observed that more excess pore water pressure (EPWP) is generated during earthquakes in a heterogeneous soil deposit than in the corresponding homogeneous soil with relative density equal to the average relative density of the heterogeneous soil. This interesting phenomenon is investigated here, by numerically simulating centrifuge experiments of seismically induced soil liquefaction using the finite element code DYNAFLOW. Two centrifuge tests are numerically simulated here: one in homogeneous soil and another in heterogeneous soil. Recorded experimental results …

City Of King City: South First Street Corridor Masterplan, Fall 2011, Crp 341 Urban Design Studio

City and Regional Planning Studios and Projects

City of King’s South First Street Corridor Master Plan is a draft document prepared by Cal Poly’s Community Design Lab as a contribution to the city’s efforts to initiate a revitalization process for the street and the areas immediately adjacent to it. Revitalizing this corridor is an important endeavor not only from the economic, functional, and livability perspectives, but also because it provides the first view of the city for drivers entering from the south. Therefore, public and private investment along South First Street should be strategically integrated and coherently designed. The South First Street Corridor Master Plan provides the …

Developing Dendrifrom Facades Using Flow Nets As A Design Aid, Jonas H. Houston Dec 2011

Developing Dendrifrom Facades Using Flow Nets As A Design Aid, Jonas H. Houston

Master's Theses

This thesis highlights a method of arriving at form that minimizes the need for high end technology and complex mathematical models, yet has structural principles of load flow at the highlighted methods core. Similar to how graphical statics assisted earlier architects and engineers to arrive at form by relating form and forces, this thesis suggests a method of form finding that relates the flow of stresses within solid masses to possible load-bearing façades. Looking to nature, where an abundance of efficient structural solutions can be found, this thesis focuses on a tree-like structural form called the dendriform. In doing so, …

WIND-CHIMNEY

Integrating the principles of a wind-catcher and a solar chimney to provide natural ventilation

Fereshteh Tavakolinia

Abstract

This paper suggests using a wind-catcher integrated with a solar-chimney in a single story building so that the resident might benefit from natural ventilation, a passive cooling system, and heating strategies; it would also help to decrease energy use, CO2 emissions, and pollution. This system is able to remove undesirable interior heat pollution from a building and provide thermal comfort for the occupant.
The present study introduces the use of a solar-chimney with an underground air channel combined with a wind-catcher, all …

Verification And Expansion Of Single-Degree-Of-Freedom Transformation Factors For Beams Using A Multi-Degree-Of-Freedom Non-Linear Numerical Analysis Method, Takayuki Yokoyama Nov 2011

Verification And Expansion Of Single-Degree-Of-Freedom Transformation Factors For Beams Using A Multi-Degree-Of-Freedom Non-Linear Numerical Analysis Method, Takayuki Yokoyama

Master's Theses

The single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) transformation factors as tabulated in John Biggs’ textbook (Biggs 1964) are accepted as the equivalent factors for simplifying and analyzing a component's response to blast. The study validates the stiffness and mass transformation factors through multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) numerical methods. After validating the transformation factors, the MDOF numerical method is used to create new stiffness and mass transformation factors for loading cases not already included in Biggs’ textbook.

The validated factors, as well as the newly developed factors are used in SDOF analyses. The deflections from the SDOF responses accurately predict the MDOF responses as long as the …
