The Liminality Of Identity And Place: Chinese Transracial Adoptees And The Built Environment, Roe Draus
The Liminality Of Identity And Place: Chinese Transracial Adoptees And The Built Environment, Roe Draus
Theses and Dissertations
International adoption of children from China began in 1992, and between 1999 and 2019, China adopted out approximately 267,000 children. At this time, around 82,000 Chinese children were adopted by American families and raised within a culturally and racially different environment. As a unique diaspora community that has been involuntarily and forcefully displaced, Chinese transracial adoptees (TRAs) are often fragmented across the United States. The outcomes have especially complex effects as their identities are often situated in perpetual in-betweenness as they must negotiate the meanings of their Chineseness, Chinese Americanness, and adopteeness. Since a sense of self and identity is …
The Evergreen Challenges Of Healing: An Evaluation Of Urban Green Space In Harambee, Kacee Ochalek
The Evergreen Challenges Of Healing: An Evaluation Of Urban Green Space In Harambee, Kacee Ochalek
Theses and Dissertations
Urban green space initiatives have emerged in low- and middle-income cities as a solution to disinvestment, the production of more positive public health metrics, and a tool of community engagement. While the production of urban greening provides ample room for applause, The City of Milwaukee’s Healing Spaces Initiative model regarding the ongoing construction of green space and the implementation of maintenance creates challenges that perpetuate racist capitalistic notions of the neoliberal project. This paper presents reports from participant observation, document analysis, and 17 qualitative interviews with representatives of the City of Milwaukee, community partners, garden leaders, and residents. The data …
Built For Food: The Resistance Of Chinese Immigrants From Service To Ownership, 1880-1960, Hongyan Yang
Built For Food: The Resistance Of Chinese Immigrants From Service To Ownership, 1880-1960, Hongyan Yang
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explores the resistant voices of Chinese immigrants embedded in their food and food spatial practices in California from 1880 to 1960. While restrictive immigration laws in the United States generally prohibited Chinese laborers from entering the country, a sizable number of Chinese laborers navigated a culinary path to America through cooking, farming, and operating Chinese restaurants; some gradually achieved upward mobility. Although these activities have been noted broadly in Chinese food and immigration histories, few scholars have explored their spatial and material impacts. There is, however, a rich transnational history behind the everyday spaces that Chinese immigrants occupied …

Senior Cohousing: The Social Architecture Of Cohousing, Community Design & Well Being, Michael Mandelman
Theses and Dissertations
The world is facing a situation without precedent, due to the anticipated growth in and increasing longevity of elderly people. Where and how people live is and can be a determinant of health. There is substantial research on inadequate housing for older people and its adverse effects on health. However, less is known about how senior cohousing affects the health of its residents. Further research is needed to improve strategies for senior living environments that promote social interaction and facilitate well-being. This study aims to bolster design and policy strategies by investigating how senior cohousing residents perceive how their living …
Restorative Potential And Working Memory Capacity Of Exposure To Vegetation In Indoor Built Environments, Jee Heon Rhee
Restorative Potential And Working Memory Capacity Of Exposure To Vegetation In Indoor Built Environments, Jee Heon Rhee
Theses and Dissertations
This research seeks to understand how natural elements – specifically, vegetation in the indoor environment - influence people’s ability to restore attention and working memory capacity. Previous research demonstrates the benefits of nature on human beings in various ways. For instance, numerous studies show the positive effects of nature on stress reduction (Hartig, Mang, & Evans, 1991; Ulrich et al., 1991) and attention restoration (Staats, Kieviet, & Hartig, 2003). However, most of these studies focus on the effect of nature in outdoor settings. Relatively few studies focus on the presence of natural elements indoors. This is an important gap in …
Measuring Discoverability In Buildings Using Spatial Analysis And Occupant Surveys: A Study Of The Uwm Union, Mahshid Jalalianhosseini
Measuring Discoverability In Buildings Using Spatial Analysis And Occupant Surveys: A Study Of The Uwm Union, Mahshid Jalalianhosseini
Theses and Dissertations
The architectural layout of a building influences the way people experience it. The more complex the layout, the overall size, the number of floors, and the more discrete spaces they contain, the harder it may be for people to discover the destinations and experiences that are available inside them. This is important because the more people are aware of what the building has to offer, the more likely they are to take advantage of these resources. This dissertation addresses the question: How do the layouts of buildings affect the potential of discoverability of places within them?
This study introduces and …
A Parametric Approach To Performative-Based Design, Case Study: Earth Tube Ventilation, Hoda Barzegar Ganji
A Parametric Approach To Performative-Based Design, Case Study: Earth Tube Ventilation, Hoda Barzegar Ganji
Theses and Dissertations
As integrated design becomes more prevalent, new workflows develop in the architectural industry. Rather than the traditional sequential pattern, the knowledge is now being applied in parallel. That is, unlike the old baton passing, the players including the architect, the engineer, the consultant, the contractor, etc. play their role simultaneously. To achieve this, an architectural ecosystem needs a compatible digital information exchange approach; an approach that involves the engineer in the strategic design of systems, increases the chances of more creative, more integrated and higher-performing systems.
There are some problems in the current parametric studies such as lack of inclusivity …
Transportation Network Company (Tnc) Ridehailing Travel Patterns In Chicago’S Economically Disconnected Areas, Kelly Marie O'Brien
Transportation Network Company (Tnc) Ridehailing Travel Patterns In Chicago’S Economically Disconnected Areas, Kelly Marie O'Brien
Theses and Dissertations
Transportation network companies (TNCs) like Uber and Lyft position themselves as a complement—rather than a detriment—to existing public transportation. Since the launch of TNCs, however, public transit ridership in major cities has steadily declined. This severely impacts economically disconnected residents, who often do not own automobiles and therefore rely on public transportation. The decline of public transit, coupled with the growth of TNCs, thus begs the question: Do TNC services complement or substitute public transportation in serving economically disconnected urban residents? Using data from the American Community Survey and new TNC data from the City of Chicago, this paper maps …
Architecture As As Act Of Transfer: Framing Denise Scott Brown's Architectural Practice With Performance, Kelsey Kuehn
Architecture As As Act Of Transfer: Framing Denise Scott Brown's Architectural Practice With Performance, Kelsey Kuehn
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the architectural practice of theorist, planner, architect, and activist Denise Scott Brown. Existing scholarship about the architect’s work is sparse and typically situates her as a significant figure due to her status as a woman working in a male-dominated field. To address this gap in scholarship, this thesis analyzes Scott Brown’s intellectual formation relative to her work on the Crosstown Community Advocacy Planning project carried out in Philadelphia in 1968 through the lens of performance theory. Her practice is considered a mediation between the archive and the repertoire as they are defined by performance studies scholar Diana …
The Consequences Of Copyright: The Origins And Implications Of Architectural Copyright Protection And Its Impact On Originality In Design, Robert Greenstreet
The Consequences Of Copyright: The Origins And Implications Of Architectural Copyright Protection And Its Impact On Originality In Design, Robert Greenstreet
Architecture Faculty Articles
The Architectural Works Copyright Protection Act was heralded as a major step forward in the protection of original design ideas. However, since its inception in 1990, a number of shortcomings that have reduced its effectiveness have become apparent. Most recently, a potentially major consequence of the act, unforeseen at its creation, has emerged, leading to considerable litigation that may have significant repercussions for design freedom, actually reducing or inhibiting the concept of originality in design. Its impacts on architecture, urbanism, and architectural education are still unknown. This paper explores the implications of copyright protection and limitations on design, examining the …
Prototyping Elliptically Profiled Inverted Pendulum Walls In Cross-Laminated Timber (Clt) For Passive Self-Centering And Seismic Resiliency, Marco Lo Ricco
Prototyping Elliptically Profiled Inverted Pendulum Walls In Cross-Laminated Timber (Clt) For Passive Self-Centering And Seismic Resiliency, Marco Lo Ricco
Theses and Dissertations
Cross-laminated timber (CLT) buildings garnered international attention, nearly a decade ago, for elevating wood construction to new heights on fully panelized assemblies of floors and walls. While highly regarded as a sustainable building material, use of CLT as a structural wall system depends on seismically resilient strategies like controlled rocking. This project prototyped elliptically profiled CLT panels and slotted-pin steel connections, at full-scale, to produce rolling and slip-friction inverted pendulum wall systems of one-story height and inspired by seismic isolation concepts. Digital fabrication realized elliptical profiles along the load-bearing edges of six 5-ply CLT panels and various customized slot shapes …
Domestic Space In The Times Of Change: The Collapse Of The Ussr, 1985-2000s, Kateryna L. Malaia
Domestic Space In The Times Of Change: The Collapse Of The Ussr, 1985-2000s, Kateryna L. Malaia
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines the ways urban domestic spaces transformed under the pressure of social upheaval related to the collapse of the USSR in 1991. The collapse of the Soviet Union has been examined from a standpoint of spatial changes, but existing studies are limited to public spaces and city-scale transformations. In other words, the collapse of the USSR remains a virtually uninvestigated event from the perspective of ordinary places integral for the study of social change in everyday life, such as apartment homes, courtyards, and residential streets. Between the late 1980s and 2000s, an unprecedented remodeling and home improvement boom …
The Aesthetics Of Frank Lloyd Wright’S Organic Architecture: Hegel, Japanese Art, And Modernism, Kenneth Charles Dahlin

Theses and Dissertations
ABSTRACT
THE AESTHETICS OF FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT’S ORGANIC ARCHITECTURE: HEGEL, JAPANESE ART, AND MODERNISM
by
Kenneth C Dahlin
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 2018
Under the Supervision of Professor Robert Greenstreet, PhD
The goal of this dissertation is to write the theory of organic architecture which Wright himself did not write. This is done through a comparison with GWF Hegel’s philosophy of art to help position Wright’s theory of organic architecture and clarify his architectural aesthetic. Contemporary theories of organicism do not address the aesthetic basis of organic architecture as theorized and practiced by Wright, and the focus of this dissertation …
The Built Landscape And Ecological Behavior: Patterns For Readdressing Environmental Thinking In Residence Hall Design, Sarah Keogh
Theses and Dissertations
This research addresses how architectural design processes and practices are implicated and/or reflected in social constructions of ecological thinking. It is generally recognized that human behaviors are affecting climate change and giving rise to a plethora of ecological issues; yet a transformation of widespread behavior has not yet followed. This raises questions. In the field of architecture, how can the built landscape function to encourage and support sustainable behavior patterns?
Looking at universities as locations that are embedded in their urban contexts and have influence both on their surrounding communities and on year after year of students who pass through, …
Ordering Spaces, Making Places: Women’S Uses Of Non-Domestic Spaces In Tokyo, Japan, 1868–1937, Yuko Nakamura
Ordering Spaces, Making Places: Women’S Uses Of Non-Domestic Spaces In Tokyo, Japan, 1868–1937, Yuko Nakamura
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explores Japanese women’s uses of non-domestic spaces in the modern period (1868–1945), focusing on the transformations that were occurring in the new capital city of Tokyo. After the 1868 Meiji Restoration, a modern government took over in place of the Tokugawa shogunate, the feudal military government that had ruled Japan for nearly three centuries, based on a hereditary status-based system. The fall of Tokugawa social order liberated Japanese people from the principle that John W. Hall famously called “rule by status.” Yet, it also complicated the ways in which the society was organized. Because the status system had …

The mathematical models of green roofs were validated by the measured soil temperature and water content of the Golda Meir Library green roof.
Using energy and mass balance models, this research found the effects of the …
An Investigation Of Daylighting Performance In Sidelit Spaces, Zhe Kong
An Investigation Of Daylighting Performance In Sidelit Spaces, Zhe Kong
Theses and Dissertations
The positive influence of daylight on people’s work and well-being has been confirmed in many studies. However, excessive daylight causes discomfort glare, which decreases work productivity, impairs occupants’ vision, and may even cause headaches. Substantial studies explored glare by correlating physical lighting measurements and subjective evaluations. With the development of High Dynamic Range (HDR) image techniques, dynamic changes of daylighting distributions can be effectively captured. Consequently, more studies paired HDR image techniques with subject evaluations to explore glare. However, studies merely relying on field measurements are not only time-consuming and labor-intensive but may also disturb occupants. To address these problems, …
Community Perspectives On Neighborhood Characteristics And Home-Buying Decisions, Madhuri Sharma
Community Perspectives On Neighborhood Characteristics And Home-Buying Decisions, Madhuri Sharma
International Journal of Geospatial and Environmental Research
This paper analyzes households’ perceptions of neighborhoods according to Brown and Chung’s framework of Market-Led Pluralism (M-LP). Using household survey responses from 100 respondents in Columbus, Ohio and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, I empirically test MLP’s utility in understanding consumers’ decision making processes on where to live and who to live with. Consumers from all races/ethnicities ranked these attributes similarly, closely aligning with the M-LP. The quality of schools, safety of neighborhoods, price and affordability generally mattered to all consumers. However, African Americans’ perceptions of certain attributes as more valuable than others’ are likely due to their lower socio-economic status and the …
Architecture Of Social Learning And Knowing: Using Social Learning And Knowing Perspectives And Design Thinking To Frame And Create Change In A Workplace Redesign Project, Amin Mojtahedi
Theses and Dissertations
There is a consensus among many theorists and practitioners from the fields of architecture, learning, and organizations that the ability to orchestrate learning and knowledge practices in the workplace creates potential for new and valuable ideas to emerge. However, due to the changing nature of the learning and knowing landscape in the knowledge economy, the role of the physical space pertaining to learning and knowing practices needs to be reexamined. To do so, and to make theories of learning and knowledge relevant to the physical space, this research study (1) uses a strand of theories and perspectives emerged in the …

by
Payman Sadeghi
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 2017
Under the Supervision of Professor D. Michael Utzinger
Good Architecture inclusively addresses all the matters that should and could be considered including but not limited to economic, social, or environmental dimensions. One might perceive ecological architecture in the same way; in reaching high-performance architecture regarding the “good,” wherein the integration of an ecological worldview should be recognized as a fundamental goal. In this domain, energy is surely a crucial concern. This dissertation’s focus is to examine ways to …
Reducing The Environmental Impacts Of Building Materials: Embodied Energy Analysis Of A High-Performance Building, Layla Qarout
Reducing The Environmental Impacts Of Building Materials: Embodied Energy Analysis Of A High-Performance Building, Layla Qarout
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to assess the embodied energy and carbon emissions of structural building materials, and determine environmental savings associated with construction. In common architectural practice, the analysis of the environmental cost of materials is typically not taken into account. This can be attributed to the lack of available data, loyalty to conventional construction methods, and complexity of embodied energy calculations. Although efforts are made to ensure accuracy of the information contained in energy databases, they are based on public domain sources and the “best” energy and carbon coefficients, with no guarantee to accuracy. Therefore, it is …
Walkability And Accessibility: Users' Perspectives Of A Planned Neighborhood, Nancy S. Chu
Walkability And Accessibility: Users' Perspectives Of A Planned Neighborhood, Nancy S. Chu
Theses and Dissertations
The transformation of the Westlawn Housing Development, one of the largest housing projects in Wisconsin, has led to this research. The old development, which was modeled after the military barracks style for its uniformity and practicality, is in extreme contrast to the new design influenced by the Traditional Neighborhood Development (TND). TND was well received by the middle class as an alternative to the suburban sprawl sweeping the nation in the 1980s. However, research suggests that most TND’s are premised on upper-middle-class preference and do not focus on the housing needs of the general population.
This research will explore if …

Theses and Dissertations
The present study is an explorative study that employs mixed methods for examining the daily life patterns and housing adjustment behaviors of low-income elderly Korean immigrants residing in public housing in the Chicago metropolitan area. It particularly focuses on identifying the cultural practices of research participants and the influence of those cultural practices on using residential features, evaluating them, and developing coping responses to satisfy dwelling needs.
The study develops upon Canter’s theories of place (1977; 1991; 1997) and Weisman’s model of place (2001), and integrates Rapoport’s concepts of culture (1980; 2008) for exploring the residential experiences of elderly Korean …
Exploring The Costs And Values Of The Household Model In Long Term Care, Mark Alan Proffitt
Exploring The Costs And Values Of The Household Model In Long Term Care, Mark Alan Proffitt
Theses and Dissertations
As part of the culture change movement in long term care, nursing homes are transforming into person centered living settings that reject the previous medical emphasis that dominated the industry. The household model is one approach to achieve this goal by systemically altering the traditional nursing home’s organization, routines and physical setting with an emphasis on recreating familiar, domestic places for its residents. The household model is hallmarked by three key characteristics: 1) the creation of a smaller functional group of residents within the nursing home that is delineated by the environment (24 residents or less) with the 2) intent …

The goal of this essay is to show that Amaranth Bakery and Café in Washington Park, Milwaukee better represents its community than other buildings in the area. The aspects I chose to discuss are the building’s physical character, its unique setting and the work of its dedicated owners, David Boucher and Stephanie Shipley. This essay discusses these three facets of the business and how they allow for a very successful bakery in the struggling neighborhood of Washington Park. Some of the aspects discussed are the building’s front-back morphology, the way the community utilizes the bakery and the collaborative work of …
Place Experience Of Nursing Home Courtyards: A Holistic Approach To Understanding Institutional Outdoor Environments, Chia Jung Shih
Place Experience Of Nursing Home Courtyards: A Holistic Approach To Understanding Institutional Outdoor Environments, Chia Jung Shih
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation research investigates place experience of three nursing home courtyards. Based on systemic place theories, each nursing home courtyard is conceptualized as place or a system consisting of three major subsystems: physical settings, people and rules of place uses. Place experience as the center of conceptualization is the result of interactions between them. Place experience is thus characterized by objective, subjective and consensual qualities of people-environment relationships. The research design follows the premises of pragmatic case study methodology; a mixed research method is employed that includes archival research of floor plans, photo documentation, a physical setting checklist and instrumented …
