Facilities & Campus Services, Sustainable UMass and Campus Planning support sustainability and energy conservation initiatives by providing in-house resources to campus staff as well as designers and contractors working with the University. The UMass Amherst Green Building Guidelines provide a framework for approaching new construction and major renovation projects at UMass Amherst that are undergoing LEED certification by focusing the conversation on green building aspects that are most important to the campus. They are intended to be the beginning of a dynamic conversation between designers, environmental consultants and constructors, university stakeholders, and users of new high performance buildings.

The Actual Cost Of Food Systems On Roadway Infrastructure, Omar G. Smadi, Inya Nlenanya, Marwan Ghandour, Silvina Lopez Barrera

Silvina Lopez Barrera

This project was designed to provide more insight into the infrastructure challenges of agricultural enterprises in Iowa and to also facilitate the understanding needed to implement broader energy-related policy and planning. This work will also provide farmers and farmer networks with the necessary resources to justify increased local and state investments in the local and regional food systems.

Using Web Scraping Technology To Automatize Cost Data Collection For Calculating Construction Cost Indexes, Joseph Shrestha, H. David Jeong Dec 2013

Using Web Scraping Technology To Automatize Cost Data Collection For Calculating Construction Cost Indexes, Joseph Shrestha, H. David Jeong

Joseph Shrestha

Construction Cost Index (CCI) and Building Cost Index (BCI) published by Engineering News Record (ENR) are two of the very popular cost indexes used in the industry. Many state DOTs publishes their highway construction cost indexes to keep track of the current trend of cost escalation. The ENR BCI and ENR CCI are prepared by collecting cost data from agents of the 20 cities in the country. Such manual process of collecting cost data can be costly. The proposed method of price data collection, based on a computer technology called “web scraping,” can automatically collect material prices and labor wage …

Dwr Based As-Built Schedule –Powerful But Highly Neglected Application Of Dwr Data, Joseph Shrestha, H. David Jeong Dec 2013

Dwr Based As-Built Schedule –Powerful But Highly Neglected Application Of Dwr Data, Joseph Shrestha, H. David Jeong

Joseph Shrestha

Daily work report (DWR) is a very important data recorded by the inspectors during the construction projects. Although, a lot of time and effort is invested to collect this big amount of DWR data, its use has been limited mostly to the contractor payment and dispute resolution. This study presents the methodological details about utilizing the historical DWR data to automatically generate the schedule for future projects based on the bid data. As a proof of concept of concept, as-built schedules has been developed from the DWR data. The as-built schedule generated can be used as a tool for more …

Efectul Confinării Asupra Conlucrării Betonului Autocompactant Cu Armătura, Marian Sabau Aug 2013

Efectul Confinării Asupra Conlucrării Betonului Autocompactant Cu Armătura, Marian Sabau

Marian Sabau

Climate Change Adaptation Chapter: Marshfield, Massachusetts, Joshua H. Chase, Jonathan G. Cooper, Rory Elizabeth Fitzgerald, Filipe Antunes Lima, Sally R. Miller, Toni Marie Pignatelli

Jonathan G. Cooper

Climate change, understood as a statistically significant variation in the mean state of the climate or its variability, is the greatest environmental challenge of this generation (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, 2001). Marshfield is already being affected by changes in the climate that will have a profound effect on the town’s economy, public health, coastal resources, natural features, water systems, and public and private infrastructure. Adaptation strategies have been widely recognized as playing an important role in improving a community’s ability to respond to climate stressors by resisting damage and recovering quickly. Based on review of climate projections for the …

Bioretention: Evaluating Their Effectiveness For Improving Water Quality In New England Urban Environments, Mary Dehais Mar 2012

Bioretention: Evaluating Their Effectiveness For Improving Water Quality In New England Urban Environments, Mary Dehais

Mary Dehais

Nonpoint source (NPS) pollution is one of the leading causes of water quality problems in the United States. Bioretention has become one of the more frequently used stormwater management practices for addressing NPS pollution in urbanized watersheds in New England. Yet despite increased acceptance, bioretention is not widely practiced. This study explores and evaluates the efficacy of bioretention for protecting urban water quality. This research found that numerous monitoring methods are used by researchers and industry experts to assess the effectiveness of stormwater best management practices (BMPs) and low impact development (LID) practices that include bioretention. The two most common …

Public Private Partnerships: What Does The Future Hold?, Michael Regan, Jim Smith, Peter Love

Michael Regan

Internationally, Public and Private Partnerships (PPPs) are being used across a wide variety of economic and social infrastructure projects in more than 85 countries. PPPs are a procurement methodology that brings a rigorous risk-weighted approach to major projects using a competitive bid process and private sector expertise and innovation. PPPs are achieving a number of significant improvements in major project procurement and improved public service delivery. This paper considers the prospects of PPPs from the perspective of government clients and their promoters of PPPs and whether current volatility and uncertainty in the capital markets in Australia will affect the feasibility of …

Homeland Security: Engaging The Frontlines - Symposium Proceedings, George H. Baker, Cheryl J. Elliott

George H Baker

The rise of the American homeland security endeavor under the leadership of the new Department of Homeland Security has been heralded by several major national strategy documents. These documents have served to organize efforts at top levels within the government and industry. However, the national strategy guidance is not getting to many organizations and people at the grass-roots level who can make the most difference in preventing attacks, protecting systems, and recovering from catastrophic events, viz. the general citizenry, private infrastructure owners, and local governments. To better understand grass-roots issues and solutions, James Madison University, in cooperation with the Federal …

Applications Of Underground Structures For The Protection Of Critical Infrastructure, George H. Baker, Richard G. Little, Don A. Linger Nov 2002

Applications Of Underground Structures For The Protection Of Critical Infrastructure, George H. Baker, Richard G. Little, Don A. Linger

George H Baker

The U.S. President’s Commission on Critical Infrastructure Protection (PCCIP), convened in the wake of the bombing of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, concluded that the nation’s physical security and economic security depend on our critical energy, communications, and computer infrastructures. While a primary motivating event for the establishment of the commission was the catastrophic physical attack of the Murrah Building, it is ironic that the commission focused its attention primarily on cyber threats. Their rationale was that cyber vulnerabilities posed a new, unaddressed challenge to infrastructure security. This approach was further questioned by the events of September 11, …
