Gray Wolves In Washington: Possible Habitat And Corridors For Movement, Joey Bisig

Introduction:Increasing the Gray Wolf (Canis lupus) population in Washington state plays two important roles. First, they are an important part of many ecosystems as they are a keystone species. This means that they are a top predator and their absence has reverberating effects on the rest of the ecosystem. As seen at Yellowstone State Park in Wyoming, elk populations ran rampant for many years and reached their peak of roughly 25,000 individuals in 1988 (Kauffman et. al. 2008). The issue lies in the grazing that these elk partake in of a vital habitat producer, Aspen saplings. In 1995 thirty …

Environmental Justice (Or Injustice?) In Pierce County, Atalie E. Moore

Introduction:According to the EPA, environmental justice is the fair treatment of all people, regardless of demographic characteristics, with respect to environmental issues (2012). However, environmental injustice often occurs. Case studies have shown that minority populations and those living in poverty shoulder a disproportionate burden of environmental problems (Blodgett 2006; Bullard et. al. 2007; Mennis 2002). A socioeconomic status (SES) index shows the disparity between advantaged and disadvantaged communities.

Introduction:The impact of the arts on a community is an exceptionally difficult thing to measure; the return on investment can be economic, social, emotional, and highly personal for each individual. The maps below consider the distribution of cultural spending in Tacoma by the Tacoma Arts Commission (TAC) in terms of geographic distribution, amount spent, and programmatic focus. For context, spending is presented against backdrops of average income, population density, and average educational attainment for adults over 25. This study exclusively considered data in two funding bienniums, 1999-2000 and 2011-2012, and data is classified into four categories: Operational Funds, Permanent …

Design and Planning Assistance Center - Projects
During the fall semester of 2004, a group of graduate Architecture and Community and Regional Planning students worked with the community of Belen to envision the design possibilities for the commuter rail stop and the surrounding neighborhoods. The design options included in this report are separated into the following three districts: the Rail District, the Downtown District, and the Acequia District. This report is targeted to all members of the community including youths, residents, city officials, local business owners, and nonprofit organizations. The purpose of this report is not to offer final design solutions, but to generate discussion within the …

Design and Planning Assistance Center - Projects
During the spring of 2013 Design Planning Assistance Center (DPAC) of the University of New Mexico's School of Architecture and Planning worked with New Mexico MainStreet to assist Clovis and Tucumcari MainStreet communities and Arts and Cultural District (ACD) initiatives. The work focused on the three historic theaters in Clovis and two in Tucumcari as part of a larger initiative on New Mexico's historic theaters. The studio proposed renovations, adaptive reuses, and additions to the theaters, and proposed both permanent and temporary facilities to create art and cultural theater districts. While these proposals are specific to each theater and community, …

A campus master plan is a far-reaching plan of action for the development and preservation of the physical campus. It is intended to guide administrators, designers, and supporters in their efforts to improve its facilities and environment over the long term.
The most recent campus master plan at Andrews University was completed in 2002 and was titled “Spirit of Place.” It focused on a series of principles and general strategies to guide planning on campus, but also included a series of actual design proposals. Many of these proposals, some of which had a much longer history, were implemented. These include …
