Ultrapassando O Debate Entre Convergência E Divergência Urbanas: A Arquitetura E O Urbanismo Em Um Contexto Global, Clara Irazabal Jan 2003

Ultrapassando O Debate Entre Convergência E Divergência Urbanas: A Arquitetura E O Urbanismo Em Um Contexto Global, Clara Irazabal

Clara Irazabal

Do Pruitt-Igoe Ao World Trade Center: Planejando A Ex/Implosão Do (Pos)Modernismo, Clara Irazabal

Clara Irazabal

Historie Centers: Public Imaginaries From Quito, Fernando Carrión Mena Jan 2003

Historie Centers: Public Imaginaries From Quito, Fernando Carrión Mena

Fernando Carrión Mena

In the histories centers, the most varied media and forms of communication converge (telephony, radio, television, postal service, cinema, theater, schools); they embrace the greatest concentration of socializing places (public and civic spaces); they possess the greatest accumulation of concentrated information (1ibraries, archives, buildings); they have the greatest number of symbolic manifestations (churches, monuments, squares); they contain the most diverse means of transportation (ports, railways, vehicles); and they attract multiple users.

In this context, communication plays a central role. Its defects can produce alterations in the functionality and quality of life of the population that lives in the city. But …

Economies Of Scale In The Library World: The Dr Martin Luther King Jr Library In San Jose, California, Paul Kauppila, Sharon Russell

Paul Kauppila

Discusses the new Dr Martin Luther King Jr Library in San Jose´, California, which will house the collections of the San Jose´ Public Library’s main branch and the San Jose´ State University’s Library system in one new building. Outlines the conception of the project, the site selection and the planning process. Considers the communities served, usage patterns and services. Focuses on the management structure and operations in light of a, perhaps controversial, aspect of mixing city and university library staff under the same roof, some performing similar functions, but with different supervisors and employing agencies. Discusses the new library in …

Dublin City Foresight: A Scenario Approach, Sinead Branagh Jan 2003

Dublin City Foresight: A Scenario Approach, Sinead Branagh

Masters

As we begin a new Millennium, a subtle and positive shift is occurring in all segments of society: an increased emphasis on the future – what it might look like, what challenges and opportunities it might present, and in what ways we might be able to respond most positively. It is emerging at a time of national reflection for organisations and individuals alike – and perhaps none too soon as changes in our social fabric, resource base, business and political environments, and perhaps most importantly, the pace and extent of changes in science and technology, launch us into exciting but …

The Prospective Process Through Scenario Thinking For The Built And Human Environment: A Tool For Exploring Urban Futures, John Ratcliffe, Lorcan Sirr

Articles

We are currently living through an era where we can, and need to, create exciting new possibilities in the way we think about, plan, design and build new places and spaces for working and living. At the same time, two irresistible forces – change and complexity – face decision-makers charged with framing and executing future policy and practice for the built and human environment. This paper generally argues the case for employing a ‘prospective’ process through scenario thinking for strategic planning and management in the urban arena. It does not attempt to identify or explore the advances made in planning …

Guiding Growth: A Survey Of Tax Incentives, New England Environmental Finance Center, Muskie School Of Public Service Jan 2003

Guiding Growth: A Survey Of Tax Incentives, New England Environmental Finance Center, Muskie School Of Public Service

Legislation

Current development patterns and increased tax pressures in local municipalities combine to harm both Maine’s natural resources and its quality of life. Previous initiatives such as the implementation of zoning laws did not fully result in the desired outcomes. Zoning laws were often too flexible and often did not resist market and political pressures to change zoning regulations to allow development with possible economic growth. A sound taxation system or fee structure may be the solution to slow down development in natural areas and direct it towards areas appropriate for growth.

To protect Maine’s natural resources more successfully from future …

Action Education In Land Use Decisions: Student Views On Urbanization And Farmland Loss, Mindi Schneider, Charles A. Francis, Dick Esseks Jan 2003

Action Education In Land Use Decisions: Student Views On Urbanization And Farmland Loss, Mindi Schneider, Charles A. Francis, Dick Esseks

CARI Extension and Education Materials for Sustainable Agriculture

Loss of prime farmland is a serious concern in the United States and around the globe. With rapid urban population increases, the activities and perceived needs of concentrated groups of people result in the swallowing of some of the most fertile lands in this country. Today we have just under 2 acres of productive farmland per person in the United States. Given the current population growth rate due to births and immigration, plus the present rate of farmland loss, World Watch Institute estimates that we will have about 0.6 acres or one-third as much farmland available per person by 2055--a …

Collaborative Teaching In Planning Education: Benefits And Issues, Bhishna Bajracharya, Shahed Khan Dec 2002

Collaborative Teaching In Planning Education: Benefits And Issues, Bhishna Bajracharya, Shahed Khan

Bhishna Bajracharya

Extract:

Extensive planning literature exists supporting the need for collaborative planning (Healey, 1998; Innes and Booher, 1999; Margerum 2002) to bring stakeholders together to resolve planning issues and to enhance deliberative learning. This idea of enhanced learning through collaboration in the professional context has also been extended to planning education. Collaboration in the class room or a teaching context not only seeks to increase teaching effectiveness but also to capture other benefits accruing to various participants in the collaboration. Studies on collaborative teaching/learning indicate that students gain more by ¯ collaborative learning than from traditional individual learning approaches because social …

Optics, Imaging, And Photonics: Building A 21st Century Industry In Rochester, Ny, Jennifer Clark, Susan Christopherson

Jennifer Clark

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The optics, imaging, and photonics industry in Rochester demonstrates strong potential to develop as an engine of economic expansion in the region. The industry, with its international markets and multiple applications, can provide the region with cutting edge technology and help to regrow a strong manufacturing sector. This report and action plan focus on the small and medium size firms (SMEs) in the industry and on how this “cluster” can fulfill its promise and realize its full capacity. There is no shortage of talent in the photonics workforce or in Rochester firms and institutions engaged in new optics …
