In The Folds: Transforming A City’S Identity Through Art And Social Purposes, Yichien Cooper

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

This autoethnographic narrative retraces my four-year journey as an art commissioner for a city that is transforming beyond the stigma associated with a significant role in early nuclear weapons to a growing agritourism industry. The looming pressure for change is just like when tectonic plates push against each other until there is a quick release, causing earthquakes and eruptions. In the midst of the changing forces, I consider how the arts fold in. There are two purposes in this article that investigates the complexity between civic development and art. First, I will (re)define and (re)frame (Short & Turner, 2013) the …

The Development Of Japanese City's Future Simulation System: My City Forecast, Toshikazu Seto, Hiroshi Omata, Yuki Fukushima, Yoko Hasegawa, Midori Maeda, Yoshihide Sekimoto

Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial (FOSS4G) Conference Proceedings

In recent years, the optimization of urban management due to the rapid population decline has been one of the major issues in Japan. Future population estimation and related statistical information, such as the location information of the public facility is now available to open. However, open data utilization in the urban planning field is not advanced in comparison with other countries. We constructed the Web system using FOSS4G that citizens can be the future image of the city to operate on their own. It used mainly below FOSS4G tools; OpenLayers, PostGIS, Pgrouting and Geocolor. The collected data calculated in advance, …

The Billion Object Platform (Bop): A System To Lower Barriers To Support Big, Streaming, Spatio-Temporal Data Sources, Devika Kakkar, Ben Lewis, David Smiley, Ariel Nunez

Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial (FOSS4G) Conference Proceedings

With funding from the Sloan Foundation and Harvard Dataverse, the Harvard Center for Geographic Analysis (CGA) has developed a big spatio-temporal data visualization platform called the Billion Object Platform or "BOP". The goal of the project is to lower barriers for scholars who wish to access large, streaming, spatio-temporal datasets. Since once archived, streaming data gets big fast, and since most GIS systems don't support interactive visualization of millions of objects, a new platform was needed. The BOP is loaded with the latest billion geo-tweets and is fed a real-time stream of about 1 million tweets per day. The CGA …

Land Use Zoning In America: The Case For Inclusionary Policy, Thomas Geffner Aug 2017

Land Use Zoning In America: The Case For Inclusionary Policy, Thomas Geffner

Anthós

Residential zoning code has been one of the most powerful forces in shaping the growth of modern American cities. By regulating which types of buildings can go where, zoning code has led to the creation of suburbs as we know them, with row after row of detached single-family homes. Indeed, the American city would look drastically different if it were not for the creation of zoning codes. But how did the institution that is American zoning come to exist? This essay will attempt to answer that question by exploring the early history of zoning, starting in the 1910s. It will …

Smart Growth And The Irish Land-Use Stakeholder: From Rhetoric To Reality, Dorothy Stewart Jun 2017

Smart Growth And The Irish Land-Use Stakeholder: From Rhetoric To Reality, Dorothy Stewart

The ITB Journal

In the past decade, Ireland has undergone a period of unprecedented growth culminating in the creation of a new economic society based on service provision, a move away from a traditional agricultural base. Allied to this has been an increase in economic, social and legislative inroads into Europe and beyond. This change has brought with it challenges commonly associated with unpredicted growth such as traffic congestion, urban sprawl, access to education and a perceived lack of affordable housing. One part of the solution proposes adopting the principles that underpin the concept of "Smart Growth". This paper critically evaluates the concept …

Provenance Of Place And Past: Designing A Bathhouse For Charlottesville (Online), Maya Chandler Apr 2017

Provenance Of Place And Past: Designing A Bathhouse For Charlottesville (Online), Maya Chandler

James Madison Undergraduate Research Journal (JMURJ)

Site, to an architect, should comprise not only the topographical and physical markers of the place, but also the cultural, historical, atmospheric, ritualistic, or intangible qualities of place. New projects ask us to examine what has preceded the proposed architecture and invite it into the work that we place on a site—not ignoring the past, mowing it down, or covering it up—but allowing it to point us in the direction of an architectural intervention. This project redesigns the historic Albemarle County Jail in downtown Charlottesville, Virginia, into a bathhouse. The place-based bathhouse design acknowledges several key elements in the jail’s …
