Introduction:Prior to World War II, the urban core area of Tacoma, Washington served as the hub of a culturally rich Japanese-American community. Beginning in the late 1880’s, the booming railroad, timber, and agriculture industries attracted workers to this region, including many Japanese immigrants. Tacoma’s “Japantown” or Nihon Machiencompassed the area between 11thand 19thStreets and Pacific and Tacoma Avenues. Japantownexperienced its zenith between 1900 and 1920. After 1920, “it began a slow decline, culminating with the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II” (Morrison 2, 41,42). This once culturally dynamic area is now in need of recognition and preservation. The …

Introduction:Youth poses a perspective of their communities that is unique, but not always acknowledged. The goal of this project was to examine how teenage residents in suburban Puyallup, WA perceive their surroundings. Some theoretical assumptions exist in background literature on this issue. Firstly, planners often design communities to prevent youth from engaging in deconstructive activities, not to allow them to engage in constructive activities. As a result, communities are often designed with fewer youth-oriented assets and venues. Fewer youth-oriented places to travel to will cause teens to be less physically active. Introduction: The Tacoma Business Improvement Area was established in 1988 and is a not-for-profit organization with a 501(c)(4) status (Tacoma BIA, 2010). The boundary encompasses an 84 block radius in the Downtown Tacoma Area including 502 parcels. The BIA is dependent on taxation from business owners within the area, and functions under the direction of a board of directors also known as the Local Development Council (Tacoma BIA, 2010). Introduction:The aim of this project is to suggest to local officials where social services for elders would best be applied and also to act as an assistive tool for seniors seeking residence in neighborhoods where high levels of livability are experienced.
