The development and management of master planned communities (MPCs) involve achieving the twin goals of building a sense of community and creating a distinctive place. The roles of private, public and community sectors in realising these goals of MPCs are evolving over time. A number of master planned communities (MPCs) have been built or are in the process of being developed in South East Queensland. They provide a useful, accessible and important focus for research into crucial public policy issues and land use planning processes. Master planned communities are characterised as being large scale, private sector driven, integrated housing developments on 'greenfield' suburban sites.
