A Comparative Analysis Of Southern Nevada Municipalities, And Their Active Participation To Implement Historical Preservation, Rhonda M. Reeves

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

A comparative analysis of southern Nevada municipalities, and their active participation to implement historical preservation is the foundation of research for this paper. The city of Las Vegas and surrounding municipalities have varying preservation programs in place. The distinctions between the municipalities historic preservation programs foster little protection for the historic site itself in most cases. Historic preservationists are actively bringing to the attention of government the importance of preservation, and are seeking more and more action on the part of the government to implement historic preservation mandates and protection.

The federal government funding for historical preservation within states is ...

Assessing The Benefit Of Improved Traveler Information: A Pseudo-Dynamic Modeling Approach , Michael David Anderson Jan 1998

Assessing The Benefit Of Improved Traveler Information: A Pseudo-Dynamic Modeling Approach , Michael David Anderson

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This research develops an assessment methodology to estimate traveler information benefits using regional travel demand and microscopic simulation approaches in combination. This method uses the strengths of the two conventional approaches in an innovative way, providing essentially a pseudo-dynamic model capability that uses readily available data and is easy to understand and implement. The pseudo-dynamic model provides measures of delay that are more reasonable than those available through either of the model sub-components individually; While attempts have been made to develop dynamic regional planning models, regional model "simulation" is not yet available. Therefore, the approach addresses several gaps in capabilities ...

Application Of Current Environmental Research To Golf Course Design, Construction, And Management Practices , Mark Gregory Kuiper Jan 1997

Application Of Current Environmental Research To Golf Course Design, Construction, And Management Practices , Mark Gregory Kuiper

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The recent proliferation of environmental research on golf courses has greatly expanded the understanding of the environmental impacts and costs of various golf course design, construction, and management strategies. This new body of research, however, has not yet been consolidated into a set of principles for sustainable golf course development and management. The purpose of this research will be to draw from current research to develop such a set of principles and, in particular, to examine the economic and environmental benefits of using native vegetation on golf courses. The objectives of this research were to: -- review and synthesize the large ...

Housing Conditions & Demographical Survey: Housing Rehabilitation For The City Of North Las Vegas, Lisa M. Morris Oct 1995

Housing Conditions & Demographical Survey: Housing Rehabilitation For The City Of North Las Vegas, Lisa M. Morris

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The basis of this research, is to evaluate the North Las Vegas area in order to develop knowledge of what areas are in critical need of rehabilitation. Improperly maintained affordable housing is one of the largest sources of wasted resources. The research was obtained through a windshield survey process, which included approximately 12,000 homes in the North Las Vegas area to determine their conditions. The findings of the windshield survey was used to correlate the results of the housing conditions, with demographics such as: Population, Age Distribution, Racial Distribution, Median Income, Poverty Levels, Age of Homes and Female Head ...

Assessment Of The Perceptions And Attitudes Of Construction Aggregate Mine Operators And County Regulatory Officials Regarding Aggregate Mining , Joseph Patrick Mcguire Jan 1995

Assessment Of The Perceptions And Attitudes Of Construction Aggregate Mine Operators And County Regulatory Officials Regarding Aggregate Mining , Joseph Patrick Mcguire

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Aggregate is the general name given to sand, gravel, limestone or other crushed stone materials. Crushed stone, in one form or another, is used in nearly every construction project. However, for a variety of reasons, the average citizen does not realize the importance or need for construction aggregate. As a result, individuals or groups who feel they may be negatively affected by the presence of an aggregate mine, frequently organize to oppose granting the permits required to operate them;A review of the literature suggests obtaining the permits required to mine and process construction aggregate is becoming a more difficult ...

Housing Constraints And Adjustment Behaviors Of Vulnerable Households , Marilyn Jo Bruin Jan 1995

Housing Constraints And Adjustment Behaviors Of Vulnerable Households , Marilyn Jo Bruin

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Three papers examine residential satisfaction, housing quality, and reported change in residential quality for households headed by single-parent women or divorced parents. Families headed by single or remarried parents are vulnerable to housing problems in that they are more likely than nuclear families to have low levels of economic resources and unmet housing needs. Three separate analyses of different data sets add to the understanding of the housing adjustment behaviors of households with non-normative family structures; The first paper reports the operationalization and testing of measures of personality characteristics to predict housing and neighborhood satisfaction. The results suggest that personality ...

The Implementation Of Public Policy: A Sociological Examination Of A Watershed Project Using Grounded Theory , James E. Malia Jan 1989

The Implementation Of Public Policy: A Sociological Examination Of A Watershed Project Using Grounded Theory , James E. Malia

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Local sponsors of federal projects may redefine policy initiatives and implementation strategies to be consistent with local perceptions of need and available resources. These local solutions may not be adequate to sustain the project or to address the larger societal good that is the prime policy objective. As a result, the policy fails to achieve its stated objectives and the societal good may be compromised. The study examines the implementation of a watershed project to learn how implementation strategies can be better devised to increase local compliance; The Little Sioux Watershed program in Western Iowa provides the empirical data for ...

A Park And Recreation Plan For The City Of Ames, Iowa, Jerome C. Miller

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The following plans and report are intended to present a comprehensive system or recreational facilities which the city of Ames will find not only an inspiration in the future, but also an absolute necessity.
