Since 1966, when the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) was signed into law, federal agencies have been required to consider their impact to known or potential historic resources under their jurisdiction. As a potentially costly and onerous process for large government installations such as the military, the law allows for procedures known as “program alternatives” which allow federal agencies to streamline the requirements for inventorying and evaluating categories of, or similar resources (in this case, buildings and structures) for their potential as historic resources.

Historic preservation executive directors are tasked with using their preservation skills and knowledge to preserve and protect the built environment. However, they are also responsible for running a business, in the form of nonprofit organization, where they manage people, projects and budgets to keep the organization functioning. When looking to the future, it is hard to ignore the significant effects climate change will have on our historic built environment. Roughly 2,459.32 acres of land throughout the historic City of Newport, Rhode Island fall within the hundred-year floodplain associated with sea level rise. As a branch of the international Arts and Crafts Movement, American Prairie Style architecture was a nostalgic ode to the horizontality and natural landscape of the Midwestern prairie and a departure from European design. Research Question: This thesis intends to answer if non-professional stakeholder meanings can assess what is appropriate for new construction in historic districts, and whether those meanings coincide with the goals of the design review guidelines for Falmouth’s historic districts.

Results: The meanings extrapolated from the non-professional Informants interviews, suggest new construction should be compatible with the surrounding streetscape, as suggested in the Falmouth’s design review guidelines

The McCloughan Mansion is an Italianate-style house located in Annandale, New Jersey on five acres of land and includes two outbuildings, a small barn and a second dwelling. The mansion was constructed between 1860 and 1870 and is significant under Criterion C in the area of Architecture. The McCloughan Mansion is an excellent example of Italianate design executed in brick masonry that is uncommon in the architectural context of the town of Annandale. The purpose of this study is to understand how users of Camp Santanoni perceive and interpret the visual harmony between historic rustic architectural design and the natural environment and if these meanings are congruent with the design recommendations from Downing, Olmsted, and Wicks. The main goal is to understand the congruent relationships between how a designer wished to achieve visual harmony between buildings and landscapes, and how people actually perceive this interaction. The meaningful relationships between users (the people) of Camp Santanoni’s buildings and the surrounding landscape (the place) were documented.

GuideStar, an online service that provides information on nonprofit organizations in the United States, was used to identify all the nonprofit organizations in downtown Woonsocket, as well as who the executive directors are and the names of people on the board of directors. Internet research was also utilized to access the websites where the students could gather contact information. The names and contact information that were collected were listed in the reference document. The list, to the students’ best abilities, is a comprehensive cross sections of business owners, non-profit leaders, and political leaders.

A new atrium has been proposed to accommodate the needs of the Barnstable Land Trusts proposed programs. The atrium would provide a well defined, ADA accessible entrance to the building. Design of the new atrium would apply to the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for new exterior additions to historic properties. It is recommended that the atrium be constructed on the west façade, after the demolition of 2/3 of the southwest ells.

The primary wood columns and secondary wall studs show a variety of conditions. Most notably, the columns at the foundation level have been cut to remove rotted portions and are now supported by concrete footings. The columns on the first floor level have been reinforced with additional pieces of wood. An additive process of building up the structure is evident, although it is not clear if this is historically original or the results of the repair efforts circa 2005.
