Brazil, Big Hydro, And A Beautiful Monster: “Green” Energy Generation In The Xingu River Basin, Ian F. Hirons
Brazil, Big Hydro, And A Beautiful Monster: “Green” Energy Generation In The Xingu River Basin, Ian F. Hirons
Student Works
Brazil is quickly becoming an influential actor on the world stage of geopolitics. The nation has achieved global economic and environmental recognition due to the extensive development of its hydrological resources in the form of hydroelectric power plants. As the world’s second greatest generator of hydroelectricity, Brazil has proven a staunch adherence to building dams in the large-scale. Though these dams have brought electricity to millions of people across the country, the socio-ecological toll inflicted by their construction has been devastating to natural biomes and local inhabitants. This article traces Brazil’s proclivity for large-scale hydropower to four motivational categories often …
Moisture Monitoring Of A Clt Structure In A Southern Climate, Elizabeth Poblete
Moisture Monitoring Of A Clt Structure In A Southern Climate, Elizabeth Poblete
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Understanding of moisture behavior in cross laminated timber (CLT) is critical to the widespread use of CLT in construction in the United States. Currently, very little data exists on the long-term impact of moisture on CLT. The objective of this research is to collect data regarding the long-term moisture variation in the CLT panel at the University of Arkansas Adohi Hall residence hall. The climate of Northwest Arkansas is different from previously monitored buildings, as they were in the Pacific Northwest. Comparatively, Northwest Arkansas has a warmer climate with higher average annual precipitation. Waterproofing efforts are usually employed to prevent …

Making Commuting Satisfying For The Employees By Allocating Them To The Proximate Jobsite, Yoo H. Kim
Making Commuting Satisfying For The Employees By Allocating Them To The Proximate Jobsite, Yoo H. Kim
Construction Management
Building a structure is a long process and it is the construction manager’s job to verify and be prepared for any curve balls that can occur. However, construction managers can often get busy and get carried away by their responsibilities and inevitably pay less attention for employee's life after work. For my Senior Project, I have put together a website that can be used by the construction managers to allocate work not only based the skillset but also based on proximity. The name of the website is ✦Proximate and it uses Google Earth Outreach (free tool) to make allocation possible. …

Effectiveness Of Building Systems Strategies For Mitigation Of Airborne Transmission Of Sars-Cov-2, Meng Kong, Jialei Shen, Bing Dong, Jianshun Jensen Zhang
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering - All Scholarship
Airborne transmission has been recognized as a major transmission pathway for the infectious disease COVID-19. This study investigated the effectiveness of several indoor air quality (IAQ) control strategies on the mitigation of airborne transmission of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. The well-known airborne disease infection risk model (Wells-Riley equation) was used to estimate the infection risk of the SARS-CoV-2 in seven (7) different types of spaces including conference center/ballrooms, hotel bistro//cafeteria, hotel lobby, classrooms (lecture), conference room/small classroom, hotel or cruise ship guest rooms and open plan offices. The IAQ control strategies included increased ventilation rate, improved air distribution …
Recycling Cigarettes Into Concrete, Jonathan R. Rosete
Recycling Cigarettes Into Concrete, Jonathan R. Rosete
Construction Management
The objective of my senior project is to find a solution for the growing amount of improperly disposed cigarette butts on our planet. To accomplish this, I created and tested concrete cylinders mixed with different amounts of used cigarettes. It is my goal that we will be able to recycle cigarette butts and incorporate them into our everyday concrete use. By adding cigarettes to our mixes, I also understand their will be concerns with its potential strength. However with this in mind, it is my intention that these current mixes will only be used for non-structural concrete. In the following, …
The Use Of Green Pond Conglomerate As Building Stone In Morris County, New Jersey, Gregory A. Pope
The Use Of Green Pond Conglomerate As Building Stone In Morris County, New Jersey, Gregory A. Pope
Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Green Pond Conglomerate (GPC) is a maroon colored quartzite with white quartz pebbles, a classic “puddingstone”. GPC derives from a NW-SW-trending sliver of Paleozoic sediments, the “Green Pond Outlier”, surrounded by older metamorphic and igneous rocks of Morris and Passaic Counties. Buildings, retaining walls, field fences, and monuments incorporate the durable and attractive stone, in a distinct geographic area of Morris County. Several instances of structures completely constructed or faced with GPC occur in and around Morristown, limited to affluent houses and one prominent church. In these cases, GPC stones were dressed and faced, a labor-intensive effort. Elsewhere in the …
Online Implementation Of Structural Analysis Tool For Remote Learning, Ghada El-Mahdy, Amany Micheal
Online Implementation Of Structural Analysis Tool For Remote Learning, Ghada El-Mahdy, Amany Micheal
Civil Engineering
The delivery of a structural analysis module to architectural or civil engineering students needs the visualization of certain diagrams, such as the internal force diagrams and the elastic line. These diagrams are difficult to grasp for students new to structural analysis and need a lot of practice to become proficient in drawing them. Current structural analysis textbooks with electronic platforms do not include tools to draw the internal force diagrams or deflection. This has led to the initiative of creating an online structural analysis tool to enable the student to easily apply different loadings on different statical systems to draw …
Environmental Soft Law As A Governance Strategy, Cary Coglianese
Environmental Soft Law As A Governance Strategy, Cary Coglianese
All Faculty Scholarship
Soft law governance relies on nongovernmental institutions that establish and implement voluntary standards. Compared with traditional hard law solutions to societal and economic problems, soft law alternatives promise to be more politically feasible to establish and then easier to adapt in the face of changing circumstances. They may also seem more likely to be flexible in what they demand of targeted businesses and other entities. But can soft law actually work to solve major problems? This Article considers the value of soft law governance through the lens of three major voluntary, nongovernmental initiatives that address environmental concerns: (1) ISO 14001 …
Analyzing The Safety Effects Of Edge Lane Roads For All Road Users, Marcial F. Lamera
Analyzing The Safety Effects Of Edge Lane Roads For All Road Users, Marcial F. Lamera
Master's Theses
This thesis acts as one of the first studies that analyzes the safety effects of Edge Lane Roads (ELR) for all road users. This is important since ELRs can be a solution to many issues, such as alleviating congestion, increasing multimodality along roadways, and reducing maintenance costs. ELRs in both North America and Australia were observed. Starting with the North American ELRs, the following study designs were employed to estimate the safety of ELRs: (a) yoked comparison where each ELR installation was matched with at least two comparable 2-lane roads to serve as comparison sites and (b) an Empirical Bayes …

Scaling Realistic Fire Scenarios, James G. Quintiere
Scaling Realistic Fire Scenarios, James G. Quintiere
Progress in Scale Modeling, an International Journal
A review is made of work on scale modeling in fire and presented from the experience of the author. Primarily, scale modeling in air is discussed but there is a brief discussion of a scale model with salt and fresh water for smoke movement. A complete set of dimensionless groups is presented for fire, then it is illustrated how selections were made for the partial scaling of specific fire scenarios. Studies have been motivated by basic research interests as well as for fire investigations. The dynamics of floorcovering fire spread in a corridor is studied to reveal many features of …
