Stained Glass Windows Of Trinity Cathedral, Cleveland, Ohio, Produced By Wilbur H. Burnham Studios, Michael Tevesz

Michael J. Tevesz

Trinity Episcopal Cathedral has over forty large stained glass windows that range in age from the 15 to the 20th Century. The medieval windows were produced in England and Germany, while the more contemporary windows were produced by such prominent studios as those directed by Willet, Connick, Tiffany, Heaton, Young, and Burnham. The more contemporary windows are of considerable artistic and historical interest, but there is very little information available about them. This monograph specifically focuses on the windows of Trinity Cathedral produced by the Wilbur H. Burnham Studios. The Burnham Studios windows are the most accessible windows within the …

Discover Joyce's Dublin By Reading And Running, Barry Sheehan Nov 2015

Discover Joyce's Dublin By Reading And Running, Barry Sheehan

Academic Articles

James Joyce told his friend Frank Budgen. “‘I want’ said Joyce, as we were walking down the Universitätstrasse, ‘to give a picture of Dublin so complete that if the city one day suddenly disappeared from the earth it could be reconstructed out of my book.’” (Budgen, 1960, p.67, 68).

This research looks at the relevance of Dublin to Joyce’s writings and to the relevance of Joyce’s writings to Dublin. It is concerned with the virtual Dublin of Joyce’s writings, the physical manifestation of Dublin over time, and the relationships between them.

Numerous scholars read and analyse the writings of Joyce …

Designing Work: A Study Of Collaboration And Concentration In Open-Plan Offices, John Walsh Nov 2015

Designing Work: A Study Of Collaboration And Concentration In Open-Plan Offices, John Walsh

Academic Articles

This article looks at the design of open-plan offices, particularly in relation to the impact of spatial design on different work-modes. It examines the history of the open-plan office, looking at how the open-plan workplace has evolved. It reports the findings of a survey on office design of 150 office workers across multiple industry sectors, job types and age categories. Finally, assuming there will not be a return en masse to the traditional, space hungry, cellular office for most knowledge workers this article considers what have we learned so far, and how spaces can be designed to support different work-modes, …

P-04 Cavan Burren 2015 Project, Rhonda Root, Robin Johnson, Ariel Solis, Abelardo Rivas

Celebration of Research and Creative Scholarship

The Cavan Burren is a plantation forest within the Marble Arch Caves UNESCO Global Geopark overlay along the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland border. The exposure of Cavan Burren’s "relict landscape" resulted from a 2012 partial clear fell. Our multidisciplinary team of researchers in architecture, technology, ecology, fine arts, and archaeology investigated domestic architecture reflected in three stone configurations: circular/semicircular sites, rectangular sites, and tomb structures. We also investigated human action on pedestal boulders (PBs), which had been modified by sculpting, splitting, and cutting away. Our first goal was to show human action on structures by using three-dimensional (3D) …

In addition to new installations, some other outcomes that have resulted from this research include an interactive online map of over 200 labyrinths in New England and two simple formulas for accurately calculating the path length of both 3- and 7-circuit Classical labyrinths.

Labyrinths, in their true, non-maze forms, have existed for thousands of years in numerous places around the world and there are similarities in the designs and uses of these …

Estetica Urbana De Una Polarizacion, Edgar E. Yanez Aug 2015

Estetica Urbana De Una Polarizacion, Edgar E. Yanez

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This work examines the changes in the Venezuelan city of Caracas during the Bolivarian Revolution during the years 1999 through 2013, under the rule of Hugo Chavez Frias (1954-2013). Stressed by a profound polarization (commonly interpreted as political), this period brought aesthetic and spatial changes, which have affected the life and perception of the city. From a neo-populist discourse inspired by the idea of the establishment of the republic under a socialist model, the Bolivarian Revolution has stripped issues that affect the sense and urban rooting such as identity, racial segregation or class struggle in addition to political differences. Reflecting …

Packaging Design Elements And Users Perception: A Context In Fashion Branding And Communication, Heer Vyas

Journal of Applied Packaging Research

The product packaging has a crucial role to attract consumer, force them to choose the product and act as a brand communication vehicle. The point of focus is how the elements of the package design affect consumer’s perceptions about products and brand. In this study, we collected data through a questionnaire that covered areas such as design elements of the package (size, shape, material, graphic design of package, typography, images and pictures), user’s perception (attention, purchase and repurchase) and their experience (feelings evoked and functional benefits). There is a difference with the professional status and age involvement with respect to …

Chimeric Realities, Thomas C. Moore May 2015

Chimeric Realities, Thomas C. Moore

Graduate School of Art Theses

This essay examines the urban experience in postmodern cities and mediated reality. Modernity brought a change in perception that altered the experience of the city. This shift was registered through cinema which disrupted the fixity of classical space and provided an aesthetic reception similar to the gaze the flaneur. With the transition into postmodernism came the idea of the Heterotopia, a city that is capable of juxtaposing multiple temporalities and spaces that are themselves incompatible. The postmodern city developed with the exponential growth of mass communication and consumption immersing us in mediated reality.

My projective works make use of collage …

A Modern Craftsman Revival, Eugene M. Rader May 2015

A Modern Craftsman Revival, Eugene M. Rader

Eugene M Rader

The modern Craftsman movement is an attempt to break the contemporary mold, that is a desire to introduce a younger generation to a level of interior detail that has been lost in contemporary construction and material usage. Components such as drywall tend to envelop all contemporary residential surfaces leaving little room for tectonic expression and opportunities for detailing. Further, a modern revival would re-establish the goals of the original movement and ensure the hand was present in the design of the home, as discussed by Winter & Vertikoff, “all versions were meant to counter the excesses of the Victorian period …

My design philosophy is to create an area that is not only aesthetically pleasing, but functional. Whether this is residential or commercial, I want you to feel comfortable about your surroundings. I want you to be able to enjoy the environment around you and feel right at home. This can be with commercial design also. I do not want someone to feel as if they are in a hospital. White walls feel institutional. I want to design places that make you feel at ease and comfortable, even if it is a place you do not necessarily want to be, such …

Most people consider Interior Design to be a luxury and something that only the wealthy and privileged can afford. However, this is not the case; anyone with any budget can have a space that they are proud to call their own. While the wealthy do have the ability to pay to furnish a room without regard to cost, which is not a criteria that alone determines whether or not you have a wonderful space. A more economical family may have to be more prudent with their furnishings purchases, but they still have the right to a beautiful, enjoyable, comfortable home. …

Interior design is not only a career it is also my passion. I have always had a passion for design especially when it comes to residential spaces. While there are many different rooms in a home I am always drawn to living rooms, bedrooms, and kitchens. Each room is like a different piece of a puzzle, they can all have their own personality, but still all fit together to create a wonderful home.

I believe it is human nature to want to change the world, to leave your mark. An interior designer has many options to do this through codes, sustainability, and collectively changing the way humans interact in a space. While the aesthetics and functionality of a space are the main goals of a design there are many opportunities to improve on a way of life and this is what I find most important.

I believe quality design does not always have to be expensive. Using things we currently have and creating something else with it is a great way to be sustainable. Not only are you saving money by re-using and sprucing up old items but you are also creating a unique piece that no one else has! Why buy new when you can re-use?

Also pleasing clients is a tough job but my passion for interior design makes me want to achieve the vision that the clients have and create a space of their dreams by doing it with passion or not …
