This article discusses design, prototype development and an experimental study of facade-integrated thermoelectric (TE) materials. TEs are smart materials that have the ability to produce a temperature gradient when electricity is applied, exploiting the Peltier effect, or to generate a voltage when exposed to a temperature gradient, utilizing the Seebeck effect. TEs can be used for heating, cooling, or power generation. In this research, heating and cooling potentials of these novel systems were explored. Initially, two low fidelity prototypes were designed and constructed, where one prototype was used to study integration of TE modules (TEM) as stand-alone elements in the ...

New developments in materials, information technology, and sustainability are changing the built environment. Smart materials, sustainable materials, integration methods—these are the current opportunities for architects, engineers and planners that result in new types of architectural artifacts. This paper discusses with illustrative examples the recent technological advancements and innovations in the design and construction of buildings, focusing on the intelligent systems, sustainability, and zero-energy buildings. Smart materials are materials that exhibit enhanced properties, and are able to respond to the changes in the environment. Sustainable architecture is environmentally conscious, saves energy and utilizes renewable materials and systems. Zero-energy design aims ...
