In 1947, at the request of the Maine Agricultural Extension Service, personnel of the USDA and Extension Service studied three Maine towns: Addison, in Washington County; Easton, in Aroostook County; and Turner, in Androscoggin County. The purpose of the studies was to determine the factors related to participation in Extension and other community-based activities; results of the research were summarized in Hay et al. (1949). The 1986-89 study of Addison analyzed in this publication is a component of a research project that focuses also on Easton and Turner and Landaff, New Hampshire. The current study is not, per se, a …
Will Women Judges Really Make A Difference?, Bertha Wilson
Will Women Judges Really Make A Difference?, Bertha Wilson
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
When I was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada in the Spring of 1982, a great many women from all across the country telephoned, cabled, or wrote to me rejoicing in my appointment. "Now," they said, "we are represented on Canada's highest court. This is the beginning of a new era for women." So why was I not rejoicing? Why did I not share the tremendous confidence of these women?
First came the realization that no one could live up to the expectations of my well-wishers. I had the sense of being doomed to failure, not because of any …
Naturalistic Assumptions And The Book Of Mormon, Gary F. Novak
Naturalistic Assumptions And The Book Of Mormon, Gary F. Novak
BYU Studies Quarterly
Gary F. Novak tells of Leonard J. Arrington's claims in his study of the naturalistic terms of the Book of Mormon. This article subjects some of the ideas presents in that article to scrutiny. Novak does lilt his discussion to one aspect of Mormon history; the so-called environmental discussion of the Book of Mormon.

Profiles And Trends In Catholic Interfaith Marriages In Utah, Deborah Brown Ascione
Profiles And Trends In Catholic Interfaith Marriages In Utah, Deborah Brown Ascione
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this study was to investigate the phenomenon of interfaith marriage. It is a comparative study using archival data. Utah Catholic interfaith marriage trends over 31 years were compared with three other Catholic dioceses in the United States similar in size or in other demographic characteristics. Results indicate that Utah is not atypical in its intermarriage patterns.
In addition, a micro-level analysis of Catholic interfaith marriages at three points in time was conducted for the Diocese of Salt Lake alone. Statistical analysis employed primarily measures of central tendency. Results indicate that Catholics intermarrying in Utah are older than …

The Social Origins Of The Kirtland Mormons, Mark R. Grandstaff, Milton Vaughn Backman Jr.
The Social Origins Of The Kirtland Mormons, Mark R. Grandstaff, Milton Vaughn Backman Jr.
BYU Studies Quarterly
Kirtland, Ohio, was settled mostly by New Englanders prior to the arrival of a group of Mormons (members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) in 1831. The Mormons came from New York and New England. These settlers were part of a westward movement of people looking for more farmland and a better climate than was found in New England and New York. The Mormons who came to Kirtland were not transients; about 95 percent had moved two times before or fewer. This article looks at schooling, wealth, and religiosity of the Mormons in Kirtland. It includes diary …

Can Ignorance Be Bliss? Imperfect Information As A Positive Influence In Political Institutions, Michael A. Fitts
Michigan Law Review
In Parts I and II, I shall summarize the law-and-economics and civic virtue perspectives on the value of political information and their proposals for reforms in the political process that would stimulate greater political information. These two literatures are often viewed as distinct in their objectives: one seeking to improve means/ends rationality; the other seeking to improve goal formation - a function that I loosely describe as normative, ethical, or value-based. Nevertheless, they share some common practical approaches where information is concerned. In Part Ill, I shall discuss the instrumental advantages to limiting political information, focusing particularly on the role …
