Indigenous Culture-Based School Mathematics In Action: Part I: Professional Development For Creating Teaching Materials, Sharon Meyer, Glen Aikenhead Jan 2021

Indigenous Culture-Based School Mathematics In Action: Part I: Professional Development For Creating Teaching Materials, Sharon Meyer, Glen Aikenhead

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This first of a pair of articles describes a professional development project that prepared four non-Indigenous mathematics teachers (Grades 5-12) to implement Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC, 2016) notion of reconciliation: cross-cultural respect through mutual understanding. The researchers collaboratively mentored the teachers to enhance their mathematics teaching with Indigenous mathematizing3. The teachers’ focus was on developing and revising lesson plans for other teachers to teach. This process explicitly and implicitly revealed precise supports that need to be in place for a teacher to succeed at innovating with this Indigenous culture-based school mathematics (ICBSM). Part I is a template for …

Phillis Wheatley And Judith Sargent Murray: Revolutionary Founders In Women’S Political Activism And Women’S American Literary Tradition, Rebecca L. Warwick Jan 2020

Phillis Wheatley And Judith Sargent Murray: Revolutionary Founders In Women’S Political Activism And Women’S American Literary Tradition, Rebecca L. Warwick

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

During the Revolutionary War the dominant belief, held by men and women alike, was that women did not possess the mental capacity or intelligence for politics. Many perceived that women were strictly domestic beings, and therefore could not participate nor contribute to the inherently political war effort. Nonetheless, a few brave women such as Phillis Wheatley and Judith Sargent Murray insisted on participating in the political dialogue of their new nation through their poetry.

Through the respective lenses of gender and race, Murray and Wheatley used their literary skills and intellectual abilities to engage with the themes of patriotism, freedom …

Culture, Depression, And Somatization: A Tale Of Two Paradigms, Mark Primosch Apr 2015

Culture, Depression, And Somatization: A Tale Of Two Paradigms, Mark Primosch

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Decades of cross-cultural research have documented a distinctive form of psychopathology among depressed non-western patient populations characterized by a number of somatic symptoms such as headache and gastrointestinal discomfort in response to psychological distress. This symptom profile is known as somatization. The presence of somatization among non-western patients differs from western concepts of depression where psychological symptoms (e.g. sad mood) are more prevalent in response to psychological distress. This distinct difference in the clinical presentation of depression among non-western and western patients highlights a critical issue regarding the utility of current diagnostic practices across cultures. For example, researchers have …

"Why Wait Until They Commit A Crime?": Moral Imbecility And The Problem Of Knowledge In Progressive America, 1880-1920, Chelsea D. Chamberlain Jan 2015

"Why Wait Until They Commit A Crime?": Moral Imbecility And The Problem Of Knowledge In Progressive America, 1880-1920, Chelsea D. Chamberlain

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Focusing on the forty-year period from 1880 to 1920, this thesis explores moral imbecility--the lack of a moral sense at birth--as a contested medical diagnosis that embodied many of modernizing America's greatest fears. It argues that moral imbecility played a pivotal role in facilitating the emergence of several hallmarks of modern America. The diagnosis legitimated medical experts’ far-reaching cultural authority, encouraged the rise of a surveillance society, and secured the growth of a medicalized bureaucratic state responsible for institutionalizing hundreds of thousands of people. As a potent medico-cultural threat based upon new and disputed knowledge claims, it became an important …

Development Of The Binary Number System And The Foundations Of Computer Science, Daniel R. Lande Dec 2014

Development Of The Binary Number System And The Foundations Of Computer Science, Daniel R. Lande

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This paper discusses the formalization of the binary number system and the groundwork that was laid for the future of digital circuitry, computers, and the field of computer science. The goal of this paper is to show how Gottfried Leibniz formalized the binary number system and solidified his thoughts through an analysis of the Chinese I Ching. In addition, Leib-niz’s work in logic and with computing machines is presented. This work laid the foundation for Boolean algebra and digital circuitry which was continued by George Boole, Augustus De Mor-gan, and Claude Shannon in the centuries following. Some have coined Leibniz …

The Role Of Culture In Advocating For Accurate Diagnosis And Rating Of Veterans' Psychological Disabilities, Hillary A. Wandler Apr 2013

The Role Of Culture In Advocating For Accurate Diagnosis And Rating Of Veterans' Psychological Disabilities, Hillary A. Wandler

Faculty Law Review Articles

This article builds on our understanding by focusing on the specific context of veterans who have psychological disability claims in the VA disability system. This is a context in which culturally aware communication can be of critical importance to the outcome of a veteran’s claim and future livelihood. This article does not presume to advise mental health professionals on cross-cultural counseling practices. Much has already been written on that subject, including in the legal context.18 It also does not attempt to answer the empirical question of how culturally un-informed assessment impacts diagnosis, for instance whether it results in over-diagnosis, under-diagnosis, …

King Of Kings: Human Rights Rhetoric And Regional Security In The Shah's Iran, 1968-1978, Bennett Gabriel Sherry

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

In the spring of 1968, Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi’s personal rule and Iran’s domestic stability were at an all-time high. For five years, Iran had enjoyed the boons of the Shah’s White Revolution. This program of economic and social reform had placed Iran on the path to becoming one of the most populous, prosperous, and powerful nations in the Middle East. In January 1968 the United Kingdom announced it would withdraw its military from the Persian Gulf. The Shah seized upon this opportunity and that provided by the promulgation of the Nixon Doctrine in 1969 to put Iran on the …

Disordered Eating, Antifat Attitudes, And Barriers To Treatment In College Women From Urban And Rural Areas, Alison Christine Pepper Jan 2009

Disordered Eating, Antifat Attitudes, And Barriers To Treatment In College Women From Urban And Rural Areas, Alison Christine Pepper

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Disordered eating (DE) is associated with physical and emotional consequences. Most incidence studies comparing rates in urban and rural regions are international. Only one examined regional differences within the United States, and no significant differences emerged. Additionally, no investigations focus on DE treatment barriers specific to rural regions. In 106 college women with significant DE patterns, this study investigated weight-based prejudices, system-level barriers, and regional status. Despite no significant regional differences in DE or barriers to treatment, results revealed high prevalence of DE and exposed barriers to DE-treatment among college women. Exploratory analyses supplement the dearth of research focusing on …
