The Influence Of Setting On Supreme Court Religious Expression Decisions, Joseph J. Hemmer Jr.

The First Amendment prohibits any establishment of religion, a dicta that has been applied in an apparently inconsistent manner by the Supreme Court when called upon to evaluate various forms of verbal and nonverbal religious communication. Court decisions have approved religious prayers and displays in government settings. When such exercises and displays were introduced to the public school academic setting, the Court chose to disallow the practice. An examination of judicial opinions reveals that justices recognize three factors inherent to the academic setting which justify the apparently contradictory decisions. The papers of Wallace W. Atwood (1872-1949), geographer, geologist, and President of Clark University spans the period 1901-1946, but by far the largest amount dates from after 1920. These papers consist largely of correspondence, being for the most part the official correspondence of the President's Office. There is also correspondence with various officials of the U.S. Geological Survey which documents Atwood's Rocky Mountain researches. Several files with various members of the Boston publishing house of Ginn and Company are concerned with the production of various Atwood textbooks. The papers include folders dealing with various geography organizations.

Among young people of college age in the United States a growing number who come from Christian homes are embracing a humanist/socialist worldview. The prominent purpose of a Christian education is to mold students into biblical thinking, or a biblical worldview as part of developing spiritually. The purpose of this quantitative, causal-comparative study was to examine the difference between worldviews and religious commitment of students who attend an Apostolic Christian college and Apostolic students who attend secular college, and to determine if there is a statistically significant difference in the two groups. Howard B. Jefferson (1901-1983) served as third President of Clark University between 1946 and 1967. This collection consists of office records and manuscripts found among his papers. President Jefferson's career as a philosopher and educator spanned several decades. Many of the materials in this collection are hand-written remarks. Nevertheless, his comments address or reflect academic ideals, academic freedom during the post World War II decade, the expansion of higher education at Clark, and elsewhere, in the 1950's and 1960's, and the impact of the Vietnam War Era on higher education.

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

Born again Christians are a significant religious population in the United States, and throughout the world. The process by which a born again identity is assumed is not clearly described in the research literature. Therefore, we asked 18 born again Christian college students a series of questions designed to uncover what led to their identity of being born again. Responses fell into three overarching themes. First, participants described exposure within relationships to God’s principles. Second, participants noted the influence of introspection and reflection on their lives apart from the influence of God. Third, participants had an active response in which …
