Friends Of The Oppressed: An Investigation Of The Kane County Anti-Slavery Society, Jeanne Schultz Angel
Friends Of The Oppressed: An Investigation Of The Kane County Anti-Slavery Society, Jeanne Schultz Angel
Theses and Dissertations
By examining the original minutes of the Kane County Anti-Slavery Society (1842-1845), a profile of local abolitionists was created and conclusions were drawn about the motivations of antislavery men and women in Illinois. Instead of following the lead of the New England antislavery groups and splitting into separate sects, the Illinois abolitionists developed their own approach to fighting slavery by combining strategies of moral suasion, politics, and economic concerns. The men and women of the KCASS proved to bte a diverse group of people in terms of age and wealth, but were similar regarding place of origin and religion. They …

Worldviews In Music: A Rhetorical Study Of Philosophies Of Truth And Reality In Country Music And Contemporary Christian Music, Karen Lynn Legg
Masters Theses
This study examines the philosophies of truth and reality that are communicated through the lyrics of Country and Contemporary Christian Music. The lyrics from the top ten songs from the years 1980, 1990, and 2000 were collected and analyzed for both genres. The songs were then coded and placed in one of eight categories: N/A, Naturalism, Transcendentalism, Theism, Naturalism/Theism, Transcendentalism/Theism, Naturalism/Transcendentalism, and Undeterminable. Country and Contemporary Christian Music’s trends were discussed individually as well as compared and contrasted to each other. Results found that Contemporary Christian songs communicate a Theistic view of truth and reality every time worldviews were brought …

Introduction: The Swiss Protestant Reformation
Introduction: The Swiss Protestant Reformation
Swiss American Historical Society Review
On November 28th , 2002 the innocent family Lieu awoke to begin another day of prayer, devotion and work in their hometown of Danane in the Ivory Coast, West Africa. However, at 9 AM gunfire erupted and rebel forces began dropping bombs on the town, announcing that the current civil war in the Ivory Coast had reached Danane, terrifying the citizens and traumatizing the Lieu family to such an extent that they and many of their neighbors resolved to flee, with literally just the shirts on their backs, into the jungle. For months they lived like animals in the wilderness …
Fragmented State, Pluralist Society: How Liberal Institutions Promote Fear, Corey Robin
Fragmented State, Pluralist Society: How Liberal Institutions Promote Fear, Corey Robin
Missouri Law Review
Fear can be used as an instrument of political repression. The purpose for using it is to target those whose actions or ideas pose a threat to established arrangements of power and authority. Repression is not aimed at ensuring laws are followed but that the powerful are obeyed. There has been a strong consensus among experts about the type of political structure that arouses repressive fear: a centralized unified state monopolizing the means of coercion. However, this is an over-simplification. The state is not the only entity capable of wielding the repressive powers of fear.

Pioneer Women In Manitoba: Evidence Of Servant-Leadership, Carolyn Crippen
Pioneer Women In Manitoba: Evidence Of Servant-Leadership, Carolyn Crippen
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
Leadership was characterized as patriarchal and hierarchical during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Pioneer women were often not credited with leadership qualities although many, including school teachers, journalists, suffragettes, healthcare workers, and social activists played an important role in the development of Manitoba communities. This study hypothesized that women were engaged in unrecognized leadership strategies within that contemporary culture. This research explored whether three particular Manitoba pioneer women, Margaret Scott (1855-1931), Margret Benedictsson (1866- 1956), and Jessie McDermott (1870-1950), did, in fact, practice a form of leadership. This leadership form was identified as servant leadership and defined by Robert …

The Elusive Common Good: Religion And Civil Society In Massachusets: 1780-1833, Johann N. Neem
History Faculty and Staff Publications
In 1810, Theophilus Parsons, the Federalist chief justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Court, argued that the state need not recognize voluntary churches, calling the idea "too absurd to be admitted." In contrast, the modern idea of civil society is premised on the right of individual citizens to associate and for their institutions to gain the legal privileges connected with incorporation.' Federalists did not share this idea. They believed that in a republic the people's interests and the state's interests were the same, since voters elected their own rulers. Private groups threatened the Federalists' vision by dividing the population. The freedom …

Family Affairs Newsletter 2004-10-01, Jean Vermette
Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)
FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.
