"Glory To The English And Protestant Name": Protestant Hegemony In Seventeenth And Eighteenth-Century Rhode Island, Mark Mulligan Jan 2023

"Glory To The English And Protestant Name": Protestant Hegemony In Seventeenth And Eighteenth-Century Rhode Island, Mark Mulligan

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This dissertation argues that Protestant hegemony prevailed in colonial Rhode Island in the absence of an established church, which demonstrates that church establishment was not the primary fuel of Protestant hegemony in the early modern English Atlantic world. Analyzing a combination of well-known and lesser-known books, letters, diaries, newspapers, and laws, my findings indicate that Rhode Island championed a broad Protestant synthesis that transcended individual denominations. While historians have identified this Protestant synthesis in the era of the early republic in the United States, my research shows that these forces of synthesis and hegemony without establishment existed at least two …

Songsters And Film Scores: Civil War Music And American Memory, Ari Marie Weinberg Mar 2017

Songsters And Film Scores: Civil War Music And American Memory, Ari Marie Weinberg

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This thesis consists of two separate essays both concerned with affect, memory, and music of the Civil War. The first examines the production, use, and purpose of a booklet called The Soldier’s Friend, with an emphasis on the mission of its producer, the United States Sanitary Commission and the needs of the readers of the booklet. In addition, I highlight the explicit connections that the organization made in this document between health and music by bringing cultural and psychological theories to the study of music. While many scholars have emphasized the ubiquity and importance of music during the War (and …

Anthony Burns And The North-South Dialogue On Slavery, Liberty, Race, And The American Revolution, Gordon S. Barker Jan 2009

Anthony Burns And The North-South Dialogue On Slavery, Liberty, Race, And The American Revolution, Gordon S. Barker

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Revisiting the Anthony Burns drama in 1854, the last fugitive slave crisis in Boston, I argue that traditional historical interpretations emphasizing an antislavery groundswell in the North mask the confusion, chaos, ethnic and class tensions, and racial division in the Bay city and also treat Virginia's most famous fugitive slave as an object rather than the Revolutionary and advocate for equal rights that he was. I contend that it was far from clear that antislavery beliefs were on the rise in midcentury Boston. I show that antislavery views had to compete with other less noble, sometimes racist, sentiments and with …

American Attitudes Toward British Imperialism, 1815--1860, Elizabeth Kelly Gray Jan 2002

American Attitudes Toward British Imperialism, 1815--1860, Elizabeth Kelly Gray

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This dissertation explores American attitudes toward British imperialism between 1815 and 1860 to determine what Americans thought of imperialism before the United States became an imperial power. It addresses the debate of whether the United States's acquisition of an empire in the 1890s was intentional or was, as many historians have characterized it, an accidental acquisition by a people long opposed to empire. This study also explores the benefits of incorporating American culture and society into the study of American imperialism.;This era connects the time when Americans re-established their independence from Great Britain---with the War of 1812---to the eve of …

A Publisher's Hand: Strategic Gambles And Cultural Leadership By Moses Dresser Phillips In Antebellum America, Marykate Mcmaster

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This study examines the life and business career of Moses Dresser Phillips (1813--1859), an important, but previously neglected, member of the Antebellum literary marketplace. If mentioned in discussions of Antebellum publishing at all, Moses Dresser Phillips is usually noted for choosing to create the Atlantic Monthly, one of his most distinguished achievements, or for deciding not to publish Uncle Tom's Cabin, one of his most costly errors. Although one of the most powerful figures in the literary marketplace, Phillips died in 1859 at age forty-six. Life dealt him a short tenure as a result of the stress caused by the …

Academic Freedom And The Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary Experience, 1979-1989, James Benson Johnson Ii

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

As fundamentalist-conservatives pressed their agenda in Southern Baptist Convention life, and, in particular, as they assumed a majority on the board of trustees of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina, the academic freedom of the Southeastern faculty became an issue. Concerns enunciated by Robert M. MacIver (1955) provide reference points in responding to the inquiry: "Was the academic freedom of the faculty violated at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary?" While a prologue and epilogue are offered, the study parameters of the Southeastern Seminary experience are 1979 to 1989. The study concludes that academic freedom was compromised in this …
