Savages And Sable Subjects: White Fear, Racism, And The Demonization Of Creole Voodoo In New Orleans In The 19th Century, Christopher L. Newman
Savages And Sable Subjects: White Fear, Racism, And The Demonization Of Creole Voodoo In New Orleans In The 19th Century, Christopher L. Newman
Madison Historical Review
Prior to the Haitian Revolution, the religion of Voodoo maintained a safe and uninterrupted presence in New Orleans. Practiced by free and enslaved Blacks, Voodoo thrived within the larger Creole culture of the Louisiana territory. However, after the rebellion, white slaveholders in New Orleans would come to regard Voodoo as an evil, savage superstition related to Haitian Vodou. The demonizing of New Orleans Voodoo would emerge from white slaveholders’ fears of slave uprisings inspired by the Haitian Revolution and a migration of Haitian rebels into New Orleans. Yet theological objections were not the primary impetus for white aggressions toward Creole …

The Möbius Strip: A Twist In Thinking About Leader-Follower Relationships, Eric Kaufman, Austin D. Council, Ibukun Dami Alegbeleye, Perry D. Martin
#LEADCC: Leading Change Conference
The Möbius strip is one of the most curious shapes, and there is value in using it as a metaphor for the leader-follower relationship. The creation and exploration of a Möbius strip promotes a sensemaking process for understanding the dual leader-follower identity necessary for effectiveness in both leader and follower roles. Furthermore, the Möbius strip can help guide thinking about healthy mentoring relationships and the ideal flow between what may seem to be contrasting priorities or styles. This paper explores practical insights from research on middle managers, experience with student programming, and historical analysis of community cultures. The exploration highlights …
A Bridge Between Earth & Sky: How The Natural World Shaped The Civilizations Of Ancient And Early-Modern Persia, Sophia Cabana
A Bridge Between Earth & Sky: How The Natural World Shaped The Civilizations Of Ancient And Early-Modern Persia, Sophia Cabana
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
This project seeks to investigate the ways in which nature shaped the culture of ancient Persia through technology, architecture, agriculture, and art. Furthermore, this project investigates how the symbols and mentalities of ancient Persia were carried forward into the early-modern period. Achaemenid Persia and Babylon are studied as societies which influenced one another and combined to create the foundation of Persian culture as it is currently understood, which then combined in later centuries with other Middle Eastern and Central Asian cultural movements to produce the Safavid and Mughal Empires. The Safavids and Mughals imitated and revived Persian culture in order …
Economic Development And Peace: To Be Pursued In Tandem, Allison Fisher
Economic Development And Peace: To Be Pursued In Tandem, Allison Fisher
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Peace and economic development are often regarded as separate fields with little overlap. The association with the field of economics makes the latter seem more measurable, more tangible, and therefore more academic. However, a shift is taking place as peace practitioners and researchers discover ways to compare the level of peace within and between countries. Current research in peace studies shows a salient link between the level of economic development and the level of peace within societies. Researchers that work in these two fields must pursue them simultaneously and jointly. The purpose of this paper is to highlight evidence of …
Defying Civility: Female Writers And Educators In Nineteenth-Century America, Tess Evans
Defying Civility: Female Writers And Educators In Nineteenth-Century America, Tess Evans
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
This thesis project investigates how northern American women in the nineteenth-century defied civility and what the consequences were. Primary and secondary source research of poetry, prose, letters, government documents, and personal accounts reveal that these women were able to step out of the domestic sphere to create a new world for themselves without the aid of males. This paper and accompanying online exhibit, Civil War Successes, explores how defying the notions of a civil woman paved the way for an earlier women’s movement than the twentieth-century. A nation torn apart by civil war saw women creating outlets for their …
Addressing Islamophobia In Greene County, Virginia, Kayla Barker
Addressing Islamophobia In Greene County, Virginia, Kayla Barker
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
This paper provides a summary of a day-long seminar organized in a rural community following another local seminar endorsed by the community’s Sheriff concerning the “Muslim Threat.” The Sheriff’s event was held just days before the 2016 U.S. presidential election. During the campaign and in the aftermath of the election, many politicians employed anti-Muslim rhetoric. This seemed to bring to the surface many Islamophobic opinions of elected officials and their electorates which were grounded in fear and misinformation.
A report published by the Pew Research Center states, “Older Americans and those with relatively low levels of educational attainment…tend to be …

The Effect of Religious Opposition on the Mexican-American War, 1846-1848
By April Pickens, History Major
James Madison University
The Mexican-American War began in dubious circumstances, and some Americans disagreed with “Polk’s War” from the beginning. But it was the united efforts of three Protestant denominations—the Congregationalists, the Unitarians, and the Quakers—that finally turned a large segment of the populace against the war. They were able to do this with their multiplying publications, which wielded significant influence in the religiously aware society that existed in America after the Second Great Awakening. When sufficient numbers of ordinary citizens and politicians began voicing …
From Individual Salvation To Social Salvation: Why Evangelist B. Fay Mills Changed His Revival Message, Constance P. Murray
From Individual Salvation To Social Salvation: Why Evangelist B. Fay Mills Changed His Revival Message, Constance P. Murray
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
Rev. B. Fay Mills was a popular, late nineteenth century Protestant evangelist whose fame approached that of the eminent Gospel preacher, Dwight L. Moody. Preaching to audiences in large urban settings, Mills’ revivals captured headlines and significant column space as he preached sermons of individual salvation from sin from the perspective of Christian orthodoxy. Yet, just as he was reaching the very top of the field of itinerant evangelists, he changed his message to reflect his growing interest in and association with the Social Gospel movement. This thesis investigates the reasons for his shift in theological viewpoint and public proclamations. …
Signified Honkey: Stories In The Key Of White, William Ryan Blosser
Signified Honkey: Stories In The Key Of White, William Ryan Blosser
Educational Specialist, 2009-2019
The following project feels like a risk. From the opening line of my paper to the final section, the reader will notice that I have chosen to stray from the traditional counseling research project and instead opted for an approach both personal and interdisciplinary as a means of exploring the topic of White privilege. My approach can best be summed up as auto ethnographic and in using this approach have tried to discover and remain true to my own voice throughout the narrative. The reader may find this voice to be sharp at times, including profanity and a degree of …
