How A Physician’S Religious Beliefs Frame An End-Of-Life Prognosis For A Terminally Ill Patient, Tyler Hershenhouse
How A Physician’S Religious Beliefs Frame An End-Of-Life Prognosis For A Terminally Ill Patient, Tyler Hershenhouse
Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium
The relationship between a physician’s religious beliefs and how they frame an end-of-life prognosis for a terminally ill patient is poorly understood. Most physicians strive to provide the best patient centered care while attempting to respect the patient’s religious beliefs during final moments of life. This study seeks to uncover if a physician’s religious beliefs have any influence on the prognosis provided to a terminally ill patient. Data collected suggests physicians who identify as Atheist responded with no significant correlation to hastening or prolonging treatment for a terminally ill patient, but there are indications to a higher degree to patient …

Adoption Contracts And Deals As Plan B Parenthood, Martha M. Ertman
Adoption Contracts And Deals As Plan B Parenthood, Martha M. Ertman
Rudd Adoption Research Program Annual Conferences
Officially, law bans adoption contracts as baby-selling. But law professor Martha Ertman shows that people routinely enter entirely legal adoption contracts. Moreover, those contracts, and the mini-contracts that she calls “deals” help birth and adoptive families tailor the agreements to their situation. Blending memoir and law, Ertman integrates small group exercises with law and history of American adoption agreements, arguing that a contractual framework treats types of adoption as variations of family form, Plan B options when circumstances block the most common -- Plan A -- form of parenthood.

Patron-Driven Acquisitions (PDA) is the hot topic in collection management. It sets traditional notions of collection-building upside down, while also presenting vendors and publishers with very different business models. Collaborating with ebrary and YBP, the University of Iowa Libraries established a PDA pilot program in September 2009 which has proven to be extremely popular with users and seems to be working in the Libraries’ favor. PDA has advantages (you only buy materials that are used) but has some potential pitfalls too, like going broke quickly, or building an ebook collection that doesn’t necessarily fit in the long run. To help …
The Civil Rights Movement And The Constitution, Wilson Huhn
The Civil Rights Movement And The Constitution, Wilson Huhn
Wilson R. Huhn
This presentation of March 3, 2012, describes the influence that the Civil Rights Movement has had on the interpretation of the Constitution. The Civil Rights Movement not only broadened our understanding of the principle of equality under Equal Protection, it also expanded opportunities for Freedom of Expression and the Right to Privacy. In addition, the Civil Rights Movement stimulated the courts to recognize the power of Congress to enact legislation under the Commerce Clause and Section 5 of the 14th Amendment. Finally, as a result of the Civil Rights Movement, the Supreme Court has moved to a more realistic, consequentialist …

It’s unorthodox: a small number of libraries nationwide are opening up their acquisitions process for e-books and letting their users make the picks. Known as patron-driven acquisition (PDA), the process involves working with a vendor to develop an e-book subject profile, and then loading MARC records for e-books matching the profile into the library’s catalog. After a certain number of uses, the library owns the e-book and the vendor deducts payment from a deposit account. There is no intervention by subject-specialist librarians or even acquisitions staff.

Despite the notion that First Amendment rights are established, valued, and respected in the United States, there continues to be confusion in public schools that leads to legal conflict over issues associated with freedoms of speech and expression, especially as they relate to religious issues. Navigating the religious rights of teachers and students can be a precarious undertaking, as administrators’ decisions regarding the expression of religious beliefs continue to be highlighted in the media and many times are resolved in the court system at great expense to school districts.
The purpose of this paper is to clarify religious rights issues …
