Ankle Stability And Single-Leg Balance Control In Collegiate Female Soccer Players Versus Non-Soccer Players, Jesus Aguilar, Courtnie Cano, Matthew Cunningham, You-Jou Hung
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 17(6): 1406-1415, 2024. Ankle sprains are common in female soccer players. Ankle injuries have the potential to impact balance control, which can further contribute to recurrent injuries. This study aimed to examine if female collegiate soccer players exhibited worse ankle stability and single-leg balance than female non-soccer players, and whether there was a correlation between ankle stability and single-leg balance. Eighteen female collegiate soccer players and 22 female non-soccer players participated in the study. The Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool (CAIT) was used to evaluate ankle stability. The Athletic Single Leg Stability Test (ASLST) of the …

Two Roads: A Case Study Comparing Project-Based Learning To Traditional Program With Student Choice, Gregory D. Warsen, Rick Vandermolen
School Leadership Review
Do the advantages of increased student engagement in a project-based learning environment sustain during a pandemic when compared to a traditional program? Researchers were able to meet with students in both programs in a midwestern school district that gave them a choice between both project-based and traditional approaches. Semi structured interviews with randomly selected students in focus groups allowed researchers to make useful comparisons to themes based on engagement using Schlecty’s (2011) model. An ability to maintain task focus using Duckworth’s GRIT scale (2007) was also captured longitudinally via a survey in students’ freshman and senior years. Qualitative analysis of …

A Unique Case Of Diffuse Large B Cell Lymphoma Presenting With Cranial Nerve Palsy, Hari Movva, Hari Das, Giri Movva, Cesar A. Peralta, Jose Campo Maldonado
Research Colloquium
• Diffuse large B cell lymphoma is the most common lymphoma responsible for 25 to 30% of non-Hodgkin lymphomas.1-4
• It commonly manifests as splenomegaly, hepatomegaly, enlarged lymph nodes and B symptoms such as fever, night sweats and weight loss. Approximately 50% of patients have extra nodal involvement; most commonly of the stomach, GI tract, and skin. 1-4
• Overall incidence in the United States is approximately 7 cases per 100,000 per year and accounts for roughly 25% of all NHL cases worldwide. 1-4
• We present a case of a 59-year-old female with

Ischemic Steal Syndrome In A Hemodialysis Patient, Hari Movva, Giri Movva, Hari Das, Cesar A. Peralta, Jose Campo Maldonado
Research Colloquium
•Steal Syndrome is a phenomenon seen in patients with retrograde flow in an ipsilateral vertebral artery due to stenosis or occlusion of the subclavian artery. 1-3 •It commonly manifests asymptomatically in most patients but can be found incidentally when there is a blood pressure difference or through upper extremity symptoms such as pain and ischemia or through neurological symptoms. 1-3 •Overall Incidence is currently unknown but most literature reports prevalence of 0.6% to 6.4%. 1-3 •We present a 45-year-old male with newly diagnosed Steal Syndrome who presented with a small blister on left ring finger, pain and bluish-black skin discoloration.
Opioid Dependence Induced By Hydromorphone Use In The Acute Care Hospital Setting., Changho Yi, Justin Faye, Jose Cano
Opioid Dependence Induced By Hydromorphone Use In The Acute Care Hospital Setting., Changho Yi, Justin Faye, Jose Cano
Research Colloquium
Background and objectives: Opioids have been used broadly for pain control in patients with intense pain in the hospital setting. Hydromorphone is one of the semisynthetic opioids with high potency that is occasionally chosen for better pain control when non-opioids and natural opioids fail to control pain1. And sometimes it is preferred in patients with hemodialysis because of the pharmacokinetics of hydromorphone which elimination is achieved easily by dialysis2. It is unknown whether its potential for abuse is higher than other opioids3,4. However, the authors experienced three cases of opioid dependence induced by using …

Disparities In Available Surgeons And Specialty Physicians Providing Endocrine-Related Health Care Coverage To Populations In South Texas And The Rio Grande Valley., Valentine S. Alia, Ed Wong Alvarado, Henry Reinhart
Research Colloquium
Background: The Rio Grande Valley and South Texas is home to some of the most medically underserved populations in the nation, with gaps in health care ranging from low rates of adequately insured individuals, to the amount of primary and specialty healthcare services available [1]. Populations living in these areas near the Texas-Mexico border have some of the highest incidence of metabolic and endocrine-related disease in the U.S., while paradoxically having a large deficit in endocrine-specialists available to meet the medical and surgical needs of the community [1,2,3].
Methods: We analyzed data from the National Center for Health Workforce Analysis …

Revealing The Key Ingredient: Understanding How Teachers In Challenging School Environments Navigate School Culture To Enhance Learner Retention, Babalwa Kafu-Quvane Dr
Journal of Curriculum, Teaching, Learning and Leadership in Education
This paper explores teachers’ professional practices to gain a thorough grasp and a deep understanding of what it takes to retain learners in an environment where most schools fail to do so. I approach the study using a qualitative multiple case study design and position it within the interpretive paradigm. I purposively selected 50 post-level one teachers from five schools. Cavanagh and Dellar’s theory on culture of school improvement, which emphasizes the transformation of schools into learning communities through social interaction, interpersonal relationships, and support among various stakeholders, including parents, teachers, and learners, was used as theoretical lens for this …

The Effects Of High-Intensity Functional Training On The Perceptions Of Exercise In Middle-Aged Females: A Pilot Study, Halle N. Brin, Baylie G. Sigmund, Nathan D. Dicks, Kathryn J. Deshaw, Tanis J. Walch, Michael J. Carper, Allison M. Barry
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 17(5): 1392-1405, 2024. The high prevalence of obesity and physical inactivity in the U.S. is a public health crisis. This study aims to examine the effects of high-intensity functional training (HIFT) on exercise perceptions and physiological changes in inactive females. A pre-test and post-test, quasi-experimental design was conducted with inactive, middle-aged females (n = 8) participating in an 8-week supervised and verified intervention (2-week High-Intensity Interval Training, 6-weeks HIFT). The Health Belief Model Scale for Exercise (HBMS-E) survey was completed pre-intervention, post-intervention, and 4-week follow-up to assess exercise perceptions. Pre- and post-intervention physiological assessments …

Practicing Feminist Disability Pedagogy: Building Interdependence Through A Classroom Participation Menu, Kristen L. Cole
Feminist Pedagogy
Following the lead of Parsloe & Smith (2022), this article explains and advocates possible modes of participation that consider the disabled, chronically ill, and systemically vulnerable students and faculty who are fighting to succeed in higher education. The way participation is measured in college classes is often ableist in nature; thus, it is important to unpack the ableist assumptions that undergird how we arrange and assess participation. Utilizing Knoll’s (2009) explication of interdependency as a practice of feminist disability pedagogy, this article offers a semester long activity called a participation menu, which provides a framework for distributing the responsibility of …

Virtual or hybrid options provide a way for marginalized faculty and staff to fully participate in their fields and on their campuses. As such, an equitable and pandemic-informed academic workplace should include fully accessible and well-resourced hybrid participation options for department meetings and events, office work, and classroom duties. In spring 2023, we created a work group on our campus to address the challenges of hybrid work and co-create campus-wide recommendations for hybrid workspaces. In this article, we share our findings and evidence-based recommendations, many of which draw on Universal Design for Learning, as well as offer suggestions on how …
Disabling Critique: Structural Barriers To Critical Disability Approaches In Teacher Education, Albert Stabler
Disabling Critique: Structural Barriers To Critical Disability Approaches In Teacher Education, Albert Stabler
Feminist Pedagogy
Considerable research has documented student resistance to efforts at diversity and equity in college curricula. Scholars have also focused on negative attitudes among K-12 teacher candidates toward anti-racist and culturally informed approaches within education, as well as on the instrumental and teacher-centered approaches that typify special education teacher preparation. Through citing this research and drawing on my own experiences as a disabled art teacher education faculty instructor attempting to encourage a critical disability perspective, I make the argument that numerous factors contribute to an anti-critical attitude among teacher candidates preparing to work with students receiving special education services.

Disability, Belongingness, And Accommodations In Post-Pandemic Learning, Madelaine A. Coffman, Meagan Winkelseth
Feminist Pedagogy
During the post-pandemic return to campus, lingering expectations for instructor flexibility illuminated the need for classroom cultures that support inclusivity and belongingness for all students. Yet power asymmetries between students and instructors, along with implicit expectations about what it means to be normal, make disclosure of personal disability, precarity, or other concealable stigmatized identities a risky prospect for those who most need accommodation. By taking a dialogical approach to classroom culture and inviting students to identify areas where flexibility is needed, instructors can increase group cohesion and feelings of belongingness, improve student-instructor relationships, and promote non-stigmatized access to accommodations. In …

Collective Access, Collective Liberation: Disability Justice And Abolitionist Pedagogical Worldmaking Toward Post(?)-Pandemic Futures, Hailey N. Otis

This critical commentary poses the question: what if we didn’t return to the “normal” of strict, ableist classrooms policies rooted in the bureaucratic, legalistic framework of “accommodations” and, instead, embraced the Disability Justice principle of collective access? After critiquing the accommodations process used in most higher education settings, I advocate for an approach we might call collective access pedagogy, which works from the fundamental assumptions that (1) all bodies exist on a spectrum of dis/ability and, thus, we all have individual needs based on our unique bodyminds, and (2) that we don’t need the constant threat of a pandemic to …
