Boosting Morale And Improving Performance In The Nursing Setting, Peta Stapleton, Amanda Henderson, Debra Creedy, Marie Cooke, Elizabeth Patterson, Heather Alexander, Alison Haywood, Megan Dalton
Boosting Morale And Improving Performance In The Nursing Setting, Peta Stapleton, Amanda Henderson, Debra Creedy, Marie Cooke, Elizabeth Patterson, Heather Alexander, Alison Haywood, Megan Dalton
Peta B. Stapleton
Aim and background: While the importance of morale is well researched in the nursing literature, strategies and interventions are not so prolific. The complexities of interpersonal relationships within the clinical domain, and the critical issues faced by nurses on a daily basis, indicate that morale, job satisfaction and motivation are essential components in improving workplace efficiency, output and communication amongst staff. Drawing on educational, organizational and psychological literature, this paper argues that the ability to inspire morale in staff is a fundamental indicator of sound leadership and managerial characteristics.

Technological Convergence And Competition On The Edge - „Emerging Markets“ And Their Regulation, Andrea Stazi
Technological Convergence And Competition On The Edge - „Emerging Markets“ And Their Regulation, Andrea Stazi
Andrea Stazi
Technological convergence, on the one hand, tends to point out new roles - and sometimes also markets - for the players in the communications industry, producing the segmentation of different functions and phases in the value chain. On the other hand, technological convergence could bring forth numerous specific antitrust issues, such as an increase in the market power of the suppliers of more appealing services or contents, or a premature foreclosure of the new market due to leveraging of the power maintained by a company in another market. A topic of particular interest, till now quite neglected by legal doctrine, …

Shifting Roles, Enduring Values: The Credible Journalist In A Digital Age, Arthur Hayes, Jane Singer, Jerry Ceppos
Jane B. Singer
When everyone can be a publisher, what distinguishes the journalist? This article considers contemporary challenges to institutional roles in a digital media environment and then turns to three broad journalistic normative values—authenticity, accountability, and autonomy—that affect the credibility of journalists and the content they provide. A set of questions that can help citizens determine the trustworthiness of information available to them emerges from the discussion.

Charitable Deductions For Rail-Trail Conversions: Reconciling The Partial Interest Rule And The National Trails System Act, Danaya C. Wright
Charitable Deductions For Rail-Trail Conversions: Reconciling The Partial Interest Rule And The National Trails System Act, Danaya C. Wright
Danaya C. Wright
Abstract: This article examines an undeveloped legal topic at the intersection of tax law and real property law: charitable deductions from income tax liability for donations of railroad corridors to be converted into recreational trails. The very popular rails-to-trails program assists in the conversion of abandoned railroad corridors into hiking and biking trails. But the legal questions surrounding the property rights of these corridors have been complex and highly litigated. In 1983, Congress amended the National Trails System Act to provide a mechanism for facilitating these conversions, a process called railbanking. In essence, a railroad transfers its real property interests …

Adolescent literacy is a looming issue in secondary schools. Being able to read, comprehend, and write is imperative for students to understand the content of their classes and textbooks. According to Michael Kamil, professor of psychological studies in education and learning at Stanford University, "we almost need a trauma center to take care of this problem, it's that serious for kids that can't read...It's the number-one factor standing in the way of their graduating" (Manzo-Kennedy). Given the importance of literacy, this article provides a story of how a high school media specialist on the east coast sought to collaborate with …
Factors Determining Net Interest Margins In Australia: Domestic And Foreign Banks, Barry Williams
Factors Determining Net Interest Margins In Australia: Domestic And Foreign Banks, Barry Williams
Barry Williams
This study tests the application of the Ho and Saunders (1981) model of bank net interest margins (NIMs), and its subsequent developments, using Australian data. The core elements of this model apply in Australia. Bank market power is found to increase NIMs, consistent with McShane and Sharpe (1985), with evidence of bank buying market share and mispricing for risk. Operating costs also have an important role in determining NIMs, together with implied payments and management quality. Bank NIMs are found to have fallen over the study period.
Effects Of Contextual Cues In Recall And Recognition Memory: The Misinformation Effect Reconsidered, Justine Campbell, Mark Edwards, Mark Horswill, Shaun Helman
Effects Of Contextual Cues In Recall And Recognition Memory: The Misinformation Effect Reconsidered, Justine Campbell, Mark Edwards, Mark Horswill, Shaun Helman
Mark Edwards
Research in semantic word list-learning paradigms suggests that presentation modality during encoding may influence word recognition at test. Given these findings, it is argued that some previous misinformation effect research might contain methodologies which are problematic. Misleading information groups typically receive erroneous information in written narratives, which may be further impeded by written tests. Results may therefore be explained by misinformation or encoding specificity. In two experiments, participants received restated, neutral, and misleading post-event information through auditory or written modalities. Participants' recognition and recall of critical details about the source event were tested. In a recognition test using the standard …
Burnout And Perceived Organisational Support Among Frontline Hospitality Employees, Gabrielle Walters, Michael Raybould
Burnout And Perceived Organisational Support Among Frontline Hospitality Employees, Gabrielle Walters, Michael Raybould
Michael Raybould
This article describes research designed to investigate the relationship between burnout and perceived organisational support (POS) among front-line hospitality employees. Three hundred front-line employees of a multisite hospitality firm were surveyed using an instrument comprising the general survey version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory and the 17-item version of the Survey of Perceived Organisational Support (POS). Significant relationships were found between POS and each of the three burnout dimensions of exhaustion, cynicism and personal efficacy. The findings of this study contribute to the existing academic literature and provide hospitality managers with a better understanding of the factors that contribute to …
Shared Situational Awareness And Actionable Knowledge: Keeping The Human In The Loop, William Chris Chambers, Robert Ryczak, Chiehwen Ed Hsu, Bob Defraites
Shared Situational Awareness And Actionable Knowledge: Keeping The Human In The Loop, William Chris Chambers, Robert Ryczak, Chiehwen Ed Hsu, Bob Defraites
Chiehwen Ed Hsu
We propose a shift from a network-centric to a human-centric framework to assimilate emerging technologies into more effective and persistent situational awareness, integrated with actionable knowledge. Diverse communities of interest are better positioned to unify their efforts and support commanders when they are able to share situational awareness. A recent demonstration of military utility of a medical situational awareness capability for influenza surveillance validated shared situational awareness requirements in general. The current and future information environment will increase military and government requirements for situational awareness and actionable knowledge to support many “observe, assess, plan, and execute” processes by decision-makers. The …

Federalism And The State Recognition Of Native American Tribes: A Survey Of State-Recognized Tribes And State Recognition Processes Across The United States, Alexa Koenig, Jonathan Stein
Alexa Koenig
This article provides a national overview of the legal status of state-recognized American Indian tribes—tribes that have been recognized by their respective states, but not the federal government. Part One discusses how state recognition functions within our federalist system and why it is becoming increasingly important for states and tribes today. Part Two categorizes the various recognition schemes utilized by states into state law, administrative, legislative and executive recognition processes. Part Three provides a summary of the tribes recognized by each state, each state’s regulatory approach to tribal-state relations, and any state Indian reservations. Part Four concludes with a brief …

Using Mandates And Incentives To Promote Sustainable Construction And Green Building Projects In The Private Sector: A Call For More State Land Use Policy Initiatives, Carl J. Circo
Carl J. Circo
Earlier this year, the United Nations released Buildings and Climate Change, which reports that 30-40% of all primary energy is used in buildings. A host of other authorities have joined the U.N. in calling for green building standards, not only to conserve energy, but also to achieve more socially responsible real estate development. A discernable movement is now afoot for government to play a significant role in promoting green building projects. But there is not yet agreement on what that role should be. In particular, green building standards have not yet found their place within the realm of land use …
Dealing With The Realities Of Race And Ethnicity: A Bioethics-Centered Argument In Favor Of Race-Based Genetics Research (Aug. Draft), Michael J. Malinowski
Dealing With The Realities Of Race And Ethnicity: A Bioethics-Centered Argument In Favor Of Race-Based Genetics Research (Aug. Draft), Michael J. Malinowski
Michael J. Malinowski
This article addresses the proliferation of race and ethnicity-based genetics research, which has become increasingly prevalent with the utilization of population genetics to make medical sense out of the map of the human genome. The article challenges the work of several law scholars with arguments based in bioethics, research pragmatism, and genetic science to propose that recognition of race and ethnicity is preferred in population genetics. The article concludes that proposals to stretch U.S. antidiscrimination jurisprudence to regulate away race and ethnicity in genetics research are misguided at best.

Grieving Families V. Freedom Of Speech: Why Funeral Protest Laws Are Constitutional And Necessary To Protect Families, Carrie Ann Harris
Grieving Families V. Freedom Of Speech: Why Funeral Protest Laws Are Constitutional And Necessary To Protect Families, Carrie Ann Harris
Carrie Ann Harris
Over the past few years, most notably during the current War on Terror, many families of soldiers who have died in action have had certain repulsive and distasteful guests invite themselves to the funerals. These protestors hold signs such as “Thank God for Dead Soldiers” and “Your Son is Going to Hell.” Americans have become outraged at these protestors and lawmakers have heard their voices. This paper discusses funeral attendees’ rights of safety and privacy versus the protestors’ rights to free speech. All of these rights are important in the United States today. However, in the end, the Funeral Protest …

Stated Economic And Social Motivations Of Australian Farm Tourism Operators, Claudia Ollenburg, Ralf Buckley
Stated Economic And Social Motivations Of Australian Farm Tourism Operators, Claudia Ollenburg, Ralf Buckley
Claudia Ollenburg
Farm tourism enterprises combine the commercial constraints of regional tourism, the nonfinancial features of family businesses, and the inheritance issues of family farms. They have theoretical significance in regional tourism geography and economics, family tourism business dynamics, and rural diversification. We examined motivations of farm tourism operators throughout Australia using both qualitative and quantitative methods. In contrast to Europe and the United States, social motivations are marginally more important overall than economic motivations. For most operators, however, both are important; and different motivations are dominant for different types of farm landholders and at different stages in farm, family, and business …
