Research and Reports on the Great Problems Seminar Program

An experimental role-playing course designed by an interdisciplinary team of faculty from engineering and the humanities puts students imaginatively into a complex nineteenth-century context as they consider how to provide a waste management solution for an expanding urban population. This role-playing game (RPG) puts students in the roles of actual people living in a turn-of-the-century industrial city in central Massachusetts. While immersing themselves in the roles of engineers, industrialists, elected officials, workers, scientists, public health officials, inventors, and city residents, students learn and practice engineering concepts (engineering design, stakeholder analysis, mass balance, sewage treatment, material properties and selection, sewage properties ...

Engineers Without Borders

The Carroll Guatemala Engineers Without Borders (EWB) team assembled at a variety of locations from around the USA before travelling together as a group into Guatemala City from Atlanta on a 7:00 PM flight on Sunday night. Only one of the team traveled all the way there solo (Jared Weight), who flew from Salt Lake City to Houston, later arriving in Guatemala City about an hour and a half before the rest of us. Seven of us departed about 6:30 am from the Helena airport (Michael Brennan, professional mentor from Morrison-Maierle, Trey Scofield – project leader, his Dad Vince ...

Bootstrapping Labelled Dataset Construction For Cow Tracking And Behavior Analysis, Aram Ter-Sarkisov, Robert Ross, John Kelleher

Conference papers

This paper introduces a new approach to the longterm tracking of an object in a challenging environment. The object is a cow and the environment is an enclosure in a cowshed. Some of the key challenges in this domain are a cluttered background, low contrast and high similarity between moving objects – which greatly reduces the efficiency of most existing approaches, including those based on background subtraction. Our approach is split into object localization, instance segmentation, learning and tracking stages. Our solution is benchmarked against a range of semi-supervised object tracking algorithms and we show that the performance is strong and ...
